Great poem by Kobe Bryant
I was very moved by this poem by the amazing basketball star, Kobe Bryant
giving a tribute to the sport that gave his life purpose and meaning
It reminded me of how I feel about music. Is music or some aspect of it, your passion?
What would you say in a letter to the thing that gives you purpose? It can be a poem or prose.
Wordsmiths, are you out there? If you're not into writing a letter, what do you think about this poem's meaning?
Dear Basketball,
From the moment
I started rolling my dad’s tube socks
And shooting imaginary
Game-winning shots
In the Great Western Forum?
I knew one thing was real:
I fell in love with you.
A love so deep I gave you my all
From my mind & body
To my spirit & soul.
As a six-year-old boy
Deeply in love with you
I never saw the end of the tunnel
I only saw myself
Running out of one.
And so I ran
I ran up and down every court
After every loose ball for you
You asked for my hustle
I gave you my heart
Because it came with so much more
I played through the sweat and hurt
Not because challenge called me
But because YOU called me
I did everything for YOU
Because that’s what you do
When someone makes you feel as
Alive as you’ve made me feel.
You gave a six-year-old boy his Laker dream
And I’ll always love you for it.
But I can’t love you obsessively for much longer
This season is all I have left to give
My heart can take the pounding
My mind can handle the grind
But my body knows it’s time to say goodbye
And that’s OK
I’m ready to let you go
I want you to know now
So we both can savor every moment we have left together
The good and the bad.
We have given each other
All that we have.
And we both know, no matter what I do next
I’ll always be that kid
With the rolled up socks
Garbage can in the corner
:05 seconds on the clock
Ball in my hands
5 … 4 … 3 … 2 … 1
Love you always
Kobe

Dear Music,
From the moment I saw you
On the Ed Sullivan show
I knew one thing was real
I was hooked on you
Although you took many forms
It was all part of one thing:
The Golden Age of Music
I pledged my loyalty
To the sound and the spirit
And the cultural revolution
That propelled you
I sacrificed everything for you
But it was worth it
You saved me from a life
Of boredom and mediocrity
And you gave me a purpose
The harder I work on your behalf
The harder you work for me
You have never let me down
You've always been there for me
And I have always been there for you
But nothing lasts forever
And someday I will have to let you go
But before I do
I will do everything in my power
To carry on your grand tradition
And to show you what I'm capable of
And we both know, no matter what I do next
I'll always be that little kid
Playing air guitar
And lip synching in the mirror
Abandoned and neglected
But never by you
You were my real family
My true destiny, my only friend, until the end
Thank you for saving my life
Will I always love you?
YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!!!
Truly yours,
Richard
