I have no idea. People have never started to listen to my music.

Seriously - I try to make better music every next time.

If people stopped listening to my music, I could only blame myself. I would have to step up my game and write better songs until they came back.

I think maybe it is not 'better songs' that is the issue, but rather, 'more accessible songs'.

Many of us know how to produce 'songs', and do it very well.

I'm not sure how many of us know how to produce songs that would be popular NOW.

What percent of listeners to internet music are interested in what we are producing?

Well, what percent are interested in the types of songs most of us here are making? Who are 'most of us here'? Are we geriatric? If so, then who are most listeners HERE? Other geriatrics? Or are we attracting the younger generation? If we're not, why not? It's not that geriatrics can't attract younger listeners. There are many in the younger generation who like really good music, such as our heroes used to produce in the 60's -70's, maybe even 80's. Can we still produce that type of music? Some of us can, fer sure. Can we do as well as The Beatles, The Who, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, or Credence Clearwater, or ...you know.

Can we really produce music to match the people we hold out as our musical heroes?

If we can, is that still viable today? I would say YES.

But...do you think you're that good? If you don't, you may be spinning your broken cogs. If yes...I think you may be viable as listening material, even today, in the age of internet sloth and crap. People can still hear. Can't they?

The length of time that people listen basically tells me what order to put the songs in for the next album / CD.

There's no negatives here. Only positives.

Well, that's only viable with some quantity of listenings.

Otherwise, apocryphal.

Well Dan,

That is a very healthy perspective for sure. One of the major quandaries of the producer/songwriter is how to make music that is relative to today's listening audience. However, I would say that if I could match the music of my musical heroes that it would not still be viable today. I say that because my musical heroes are all so old and their musical styles are very dated. I mean it would probably be viable to me personally and to a few of my dear old friends. But today's youth would be bored and confused by it. One of the ways that i try to maintain my current musical standards acumen is by competing with younger artists in contests. I learn a lot by listening to what they are doing. Usually it is the same old stuff with a new twist or two. In the music and film industries, not much new or original ever really happens. It just seems to be a continuous rehash of the past. So, in that sense I am pretty much timeless. :)

Much Respect,
Stoneman

Really good points all around especially The Stoneman... ;-) imo.

JayZ said (something to the affect of)... "We don't care if your music was or is better than ours.... this is ours in our time... it's who we are right now"
Not really a quote but I put them in for some clarity of the point.

I get it... I'm 52 and the millennials drool... uhhh rule!

So unless you can be hired as a slinging guitar gun or vocalist in Gnashvile... maybe try the publishing route and see if you have something in your catalog for a movie/TV/ commercial...
or just enjoy what you do heart and soul and thank those who find something you like along the way.
Not saying to give up but know and understand the landscape as best you can...

What was the question again.
