Most actual shrinks are not such cynics, so methinks you are a fake, sir. I for one have NEVER posted a FB tribute to an artist that I have not paid them for their music. A couple times I have purchased their entire discography. Sounds like you have an axe to grind. Go see Dr. Phil; Mr. "Shrink." I would love to watch that episode!

How would one know that they never bought a record by the artist? A very flawed assumption. Most fans are very intimate with the music of their favorites. I just don't see that kind of fan-ship much at all. When someone dies it is customary to be respectful at least. Posting a tribute is (in this day and time) the ultimate respect one could pay. Just because you don't buy something does not mean you don't like it. It just may mean that you don't have the cash or you have other priorities than listening to and buying music. You know? Things like food. clothing and heat? I know, sounds strange, but there are people out there that do not listen to any music at all. There actually people out there that have nothing to play music on. You may say, but they have a computer to post things with. Not necessarily. Most libraries have computers for people to use and they are free. I see nothing wrong with being respectful

Stepping aside a little from the original question. Many artists die in tragic circumstances but most die of old age and related problems. I worry about self harm, abuse and suicide and I think you can often see this coming.

If an artist (or anyone) starts to write depressing songs/poems that relate to their state of mind... if people outwardly confess to abusing their mind and body.... or if someone makes fatalistic blogs and posts, then that's a good time to show respect and offer support - maybe avoid an obituary.

Often friends and fans are unaware of what's going on, they are blinded to the truth of situations that a more objective observer could pick up on. Comment after the event can seem a little like band wagon jumping.... however every death of a peer or someone from your past will bring into question one's own mortality.
