A few topics...
Has anyone seen the great music documentary, "here is what is" by Daniel Lanois? He is one of my fave producers and musicians. I really got alot out of this film, I bought it with the Cd. It's kind of a journey into his creative process and his and Brian Eno's, as well as his band member's thoughts, on music and recording. I highly suggest it, if anyone is looking for some inspiration and or an encompassing experience about the subject of music. It's very sonic, uplifting, and organic, in my opinion.

I've also gotten alot out of the Irish film, "Once', again. I had already bought the CD, but now know, that I must own the film.:)
On another subject, what do most people use to record their scratch tracks at home, or any new ideas for songs? I've been told to get a 4 track, this might be the best route for me, as I'm not too computerly (is that a word?) mastered. Any ideas anyone? As soon as I get over my carpel tunnel surgery this friday, i can't wait to get my new stuff recorded and also get back on the saddle.

I believe you've suggested that documentary to me before - I must see it - will check netflix. Between that and trips to the DVD department at the local book/music store I've been enjoying a whole bunch of stuff, but haven't seen that one. Enjoyed one featuring producer Tom Dowd, (LINK) who worked with folks from Aretha and Ray (Charles, not Porter) to Clapton and the Allmans...very cool show, I suggest it strongly...will follow up on your suggestion as well...
I enjoyed "Once" very much, just a couple of months ago...
Have a cool DVD about/by THE BAND, which I found inspirational as well...fired me up to turn my living room into a temporary studio, as they used a pool house of a property rented from Sammy Davis, Jr. in LA to record an album (lol - now I want to build a "pool house" - don't even need a pool!)...

Edit - just checked at netflix and "here is what is" has a "very long wait" - that means they either bought three copies, or tons of people agree with you, Gina (lol)...nice!

A few nuggets on the home recorder try and get on with inbuilt hard drive and cd recorder. A Yamaha Aw16g at 429 dollars from ebay is a good bet.

We always pay dollar equals a pound for anything like this not fair. This would be 218 quid here i bet you would not find one for less than £900 in the UK which is 1800 dollars :(
Crack a jack crow has one and there not bad at all and not overly complicated. A good few hours of usage should see you thru the learning curve. Good luck with the operation

I use a Roland VS2480 for all of my home recording, Gina. I'm sure it's overkill for what you're talking about. Sorry I neglected that part of your post!
I have a friend who got one of the little handheld stereo recorders. He actually used it to record an album of solo acoustic guitar instrumentals. There are a number out there, but I am unfamiliar with them. If you're interested in learning more let me know and I'll find out which he has - I know he's had it for months and is pleased with it.

Hope all goes well with the surgery. Take care and I hope you're back up and playing soon.
Other than singing, there aren't too many instruments that don't require using the wrist and fingers....
Anybody have any ideas for a substitute axe for Gina while she recovers?
Slide whistle? nope..

Thanks Everyone, for your suggestions and good wishes. I just am trying to get my head wrapped around the hope that i will be playing again, and the songs are just going to flow after this surgery, trying to think positive...:) Of course, you all inspire me so...
It would be nice to have any sort of recording mechanism, to even lay down my vocals, hell, I'll go acapella if I have to, until things get back to normal.
Yeah, the Daniel Lanois documentary really inspired me so much and even the movie, "August Rush", which I just saw about a month ago. I am always so behind with movies. I will check out the documentary you suggested, Hugh, thanks for reminding me.

Hoping to see this film soon as possible Gina and wishing you the very best with your surgery and a speedy recovery.
To get ideas down, if we don't have time to commit to the song right away we use a small tape recorder, the trouble with that is that we have once or twice taped over a song by accident, eeks! These days we try not to write unless we are going to get the song started there and then, we use a Roland Boss BR1180 and it does have way too many unfinished tracks on it at the moment :)
