Do you have conflicting styles?
I do, and I wonder if others do. Some background, first. I started playing piano when I was really young (3) and for years I studied classical piano. I loved studying Bach, Chopin, Grieg, Rachmaninoff, and playing them. Then when I was around 15 and started hanging out with other musicians in high school and playing in a band, everything changed. Suddenly I loved recording, messing with tape loops (this was 1975, after all!), etc. Suddenly there were two areas of music that I really liked that conflicted with each other. This carries over to today. One day I'll come up with a solo piano piece that has classical overtones while the next day I'm slowing down a short wave radio recording and reversing it for use in something totally weird. Anyone else have musical extremes?

Or maybe my cheese has slid off its cracker.

Yes, I also have conflicting styles. I can sound hard rock raspy female vocals to singing soft Joni Mitchell style and then over to Billi Holiday old jazz styles, then to R & B Gladys Knight type stuff..........can't make my mind up sometimes. Love singing them all. It's fun but sometimes a deterant. The listeners get confused because they want to peg you in a certain style. The band has a weird following of people. I don't do opera in the band, only in the shower.

I am all over the map, by myself. That eclecticism was tempered by the other guys in the band, when we recorded the album, though.

But now that I'm on my own again, maybe I will be able to touch on it all for the next one. My concept: a record called Jukebox that is recorded at different studios, with different musicians, with songs of varying styles. I already have songs written that are:
•Punk
•Country
•Pop of varying styles:
-power pop
-pure pop
-klezmer pop (seriously)

And I'm sure that there'll be more covered before it's all over.

There were those who thought the first one was all-over the map. Wait until they hear the NEXT one! (If it ever happens.)

I love to perform hard alternative sounds but I prefer to listen to male vocals.lol Go figure. I also do softer contemporary stuff which was largely influenced by my father's writing style (who also happens to be on IAC...Don and Patty Jenks- a little plug there). Anywho,,,why commit? Music is so yummy.

Yeah. My country side is always getting drunk and starting fiights with my psychedelic jam band side. And my punk side spits on my jazz side everytime I play a four-part chord. And when the bluesy side shows up...

Absolutely!

I see it as an artistic plus, and a commercial minus,-------------------

Really the audience have been groomed for years, to expect certain sounds from
the performers they listen to--------when an artist breaks away and does something totally different, often the fans are not happy !
Part of being an Indie Artist, is I think, refusing to bow to these pressures, and creating for the soul, not the market.

...my bluesy side has no respect for my bleeding heart folk side.

But it's funny how they all band together to collectively kick the sh*t out of my pop side when he shows up.

i'm a notorious genre hopper, sometimes to my own commercial detriment (but i'm not looking to sell perfume so what do i care about being commercial!). i'll write an acoustic ballad, record something that sounds like it belongs on an early nine inch nails album, i'll grap a hip hop / R&B beat and team it up with a banjo or dulcimer. my first band was a punk outfit, i've done jazz standards, and i've been composing classical piano pieces since childhood. some people have a "style" and they stick to it, but i'm an adventurer. all i want is a "sound" and all i want that sound to be is "good". :)

As I write songs I hear them different ways, and try to record them the way I hear them. They are often very different because my influences are pretty vast. While most of my favorites are from the psychedelic era, I also have a huge collection of vintage soul 45s. I also love grunge.

Even though I hear songs certain ways, my execution is often lacking. My song You Must Know, in my head it sounds like a Phil Spector hit, but recording it, it came out sounding like the Beach Boys.
