REALIZATION..........A wake-up call?
OK .... so everyone has thier own way of promoting oneself in the most monetarily feesable way, right? Well, I for one work at a major company warehouse where we get Truck Drivers from all over the US. I try to send a free CD with truckers who are willing to listen to my stuff. I ask them (if they like my tunes) to spread the word around. If they don't like it, I tell them the CDs work good for coasters, frizbees, and for skeet shooting!
Anyways, I gave one to a local trucker that I see on a regular basis, almost daily. I asked him to give me some feedback on what he thought. This is when you have to wear your heart and soul on your sleeves. He said my "stuff was very good, but you can really tell it was from the 70's". So, I guess all this time I spend trying to "keep up with the times" is just a waste of time. My true style still lingers and hangs on me like the same brand of deoderant I've used for the last 20 years..........
Course,.... That's just one persons opinion that is tattooed from head to toe, shaved head, with last weeks clothes still on, and has calasses on his head from banging the wall.

Seriously though, people are people. You have to expect the unexpected and don't let it mess with your head. I just found that guys answer truthful and a wide rude awakening for myself. I've been playing and writing Blues material lately, which I have always found very easy to do. I stayed away from that genre earlier because I felt I wanted a bigger challange. I love jazz-fusion and even started taking lessons to learn cool chords and riffs. We all have to do what we have to do to get that Adrenalin Rush of being recognized for what we love to do..........
Show-Off our talents!

So here's to all of the Show-Offs!
Cheers!

D.

The 70s were good times for this old boy---

Maybe thats why i like Duanes licks

Blues --R&B--Progressive long lead breaks. Smokin' out back

Now the 2011 sounds are so varied ---its hard to pin down a sound that will represent these times ---when we look back

Agree totally with Silverwood ... and also, anything goes these days and that's a great thing. Some people are purposely doing 70's to be "retro"! I think you have to tell the truth to yourself and play and write what sounds good to you. That's what musicians do best.

Oh yeah and forgot to say this: One time a friend of mine was really critical of a vocal I did on this one tune. Whatever .... everyone is entitled to their opinion, but a couple of years later, he showed up with a cd he had burned and it had that very same version of that song on it and he was all raving about how I had nailed the vocal and how fabulous it was ..... haha - so I can't really take what people say all that seriously anymore -

Thanks for the comments everyone. Just a little insight, cause I don't really blog much.

I'm going to play a half hour tonight at the Clayton Club (acoustic open mic night) and I'm going to try out a few new tunes Live.
I only have one or two songs left to mix and I'll have a new CD!

Gotta go practice,

D.

About 15 years ago a bunch of music industry muckity mucks I pitched to told me that my music sounded dated. That seems to be the industry standard way of saying that your music is not comparable to today's sound. In 2006 one of those guys signed two of my songs. He didn't even remember me. I could be wrong but I think my music still sounds like it did 15 years ago. Not much has changed. But then again, Mr. Butthead still hasn't done anything with the songs. Maybe he listened a bit more and remembered me or realized that the songs sound dated. Whatever the case, although the chordal progressions, lyrical correlation and technology have moved the industry towards "todays" sound. The reality is that the foundation of most of today's hits are still the same as many of the songs from the 60's, 70's and 80's. So, the fact is that your sound is "Cutting Edge". 70's music is really damn good music. So good that they are still doing it. They just do it with a 2011 flair.

Keep Doing You Man!
