What is the spirit of Rock?
I've been thinking about this...the reasons and the message behind rock music has evolved so much over the years. Is the message behind rock peace, rebellion, or expression, "sticking it to the man" or is that just a thing of the past? Has the mass commercialization of popular music over the years warped the meaning so much that its undefinable?
Is all that's left just the combination of songs with electric guitars, sometimes keyboards a vocalist and a drummer? Or is it just kind of some vague reflection of pop culture? What do you think?

i do feel that mass commercialization dumbs down the music, and the media's push of the "next big thing" fans the "burnout flame".
i do not think there is a "unified rock message" and i feel it would be unfair to try and compartmentalize it as such. im not sure the message has changed, but has grown to encompass each of the messages you mention - i think the msg is every one of those things, or at least tries to be. i would also throw in life, death, love, religion or lack of, and countless other messages

I've gone through the same thought process but even with all of the changes and the morphing I still feel that there is a common demoniator for true rock, which is raw expression.
Commercialization alters the expression, makes it less from the soul because as a writer and producer you have to mold your expression into what you think the public demands. Its rare that you can make the shoe fit both feet.
