earthquake in New Zealand
7.4 on the richter scale---10 km underground
--we woke around 4.35am with some shaking and rattling but 200 kms south is utter destruction---My hometown Christchurch got the worst, the central city is closed off with buildings collapsing across the street, onto parked cars, no power or water, many homes wrecked with chimneys through the roof---no deaths thank god!
some looting already which is sad
I got 3 kids living down there ---all have been in touch and are ok!!
Now the clean up begins--- we will head south

Glad everyone is OK. Earthquakes can help you realize, and put you in perspective of Mother Earth very quickly.
I live where there is plenty being from the SF Bay area. We Rock N Roll up here literally dude!

The east coast here's been dodging Earl the last few days.
A few days ago, it was a hurricane, seemed headed straight for the eastern seaboard. Fortunately, seems to have turned back out to sea...

Thanks for the support, so far there have been 100,000 buildings damaged
The aftershocks are up to 5.4 so people are nervous, but everyone is helping out and there have been some amazing survival stories. we are going south, the business area is locked down, and it will take some time to rebuild.
Colin we are coming, can you suggest a place and time to meet on 14th October, close to Kings cross station, and link in with DKs Mum (Jill)----we don't know London, at all should be a hoot

Glad to hear your kids are okay. I have friends in CC ... thankfully they came through the quake unscathed as well. I've been to CC and am trying to imagine the distress and heartache from what we see on the news here following the quake and subsequent damage. You and your family are in our thoughts Rob along with the many others who will be needing all the help and support the world has to offer.
We stand in awe, fear and respect of the unfathomable power of nature.

You are right: it is sad to see old beautiful buildings damaged to a point where they must be demolished. But most of the houses were solid enough to withstand the quake nonetheless (I am glad to read that on BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-pacific-11257500)

Sam 500km is a long strech can't ewe jump a freight train to LA in 3 weeks
--it would ensure success for the concert IMO!

We came back from the earthquake zone Sunday--- extreme damage has been very selective, the old town centre is a mess, and anywhere that liquifaction has occurred.
Liquifaction is where the earth turns to a sludgey wet mess and buildings sink and twist apart with mud and sand everywhere
The new Hi hat is a beauty 1940s jazz made by John Grey & sons
very robust, yet sensitive !
