Rob: I DO believe & hope in this: if you didn't get your music to a very broad audience early on, and you do have some talent & something to offer, than it may boil down to longevity, sheer volume of original material & tastefully done/stylized covers, and Persistence & Determination.
Not to mention it must require constant/evolving, improving & re-learning your craft; and the achievement of a far-reaching/multi-pronged attack, as you find your demographic & niche.
But time will tell, if we've been going at this all wrong....

Yeh---i can see the truth in this ---but that doesn't mean talent is not needed also?
This quote came from a "life coach" from the USA who is in NZ at the moment
i had a chat with her and she was very "informed" about the music industry, and stereotypes and the "youthful" aspects of picking winners
ie good looks, great figure, cool hairstyle etc
I have seen the consequences of persistence working on the 'net on the promotional side
Money is another story!!!

Supposedly, all we gotta do is get to 2000 fans.... that actually BUY CDs, mp3s, and merch.... s'harder than it sounds.... even some of the GREAT/diehard fans want a free ride....
that's why soundtracks for underground films or even more mainstream, or VIDEO games, would be BEST, if ya got the connects...
but YES, Talent is definitely an important part of the equation... so if we have any incling of talent/composing skills or potential, we should practice & continue to evolve in our chosen artform.

Here's some proof that persistence works----imo
In 2006 Silverwoodstudio put up a first site on myspace, and bought a Domain name to set up a .com
We were called "silverwood" and the web address address we sought was
www.silverwood.com
BUT---it was already taken---- so we went for Silverwoodstudio.com
But that was taken too---so we settled for silverwoodstudio.net
4 years passed and we found IAC, EZFolk, Reverbnation etc
Our music got played a lot---over time--we kept new material pumping out and
persisted on blogs etc
Now it is 2011 and if we google one word "silverwoodstudio" we are #1 on the front page!
BUT even better---if we google 'Silverwood' we also come up on the first page at #6 as (Rob Barrer)
not bad eh?

yup. if you have something to offer, and you hussle/promote your projects, the listeners & hits will eventually come.
I've heard a lot of successful artists say that it takes 10 years of going at it, full steam ahead, for an artist/music/film project to get noticed...
but again that's persistence,
WITH talent,
and thankfully Rob, y'all have got BOTH !

We have also found it does pay to have back up sites, so when one site goes down
your domain page doesn't have NO LINKS
