IAC Songchain...
I just had an idea for a thread...
Which is that someone puts an iac songlink up (not their OWN song lol) and the next person who answers the thread comments on it in some way (good or bad-to your taste or not-whatever) and leaves a songlink that the NEXT person answering the thread can comment on-and they in turn leave a songlink for the person after them.....and so on..

Just thought it might be fun and a way of discovering different music here-So if yuz wanna play...
Anyway i'll start..

The Dreaming Dead

Great idea, Steve. I think I added The Dreaming Dead from one of your stations. Great song. Lazy summer feel and twang guitar lead.

I have yet to figure out how to do a link like you have, so I'll just leave a cut and paste opportunity to listen to Happy Rhodes' "Winter"

'Happy Rhodes' "Winter"'

Interesting atmospheric number, the singer has quite an unusual voice, deep and smooth but with some unexpected highs.
The rythmic change in the middle caught me suprise, mostly made of of vocal samples, but in an usnusual way.

Good idea for athread this as I would never have come across this otherwise.

My suggestion for listen too is

Sally Strawberry's Come Back To Bed one of my favorite songs and it aint even blues :-)

OK Jammers I'm gonna respond to your choice but not to Steve's (this is "chain" right? -- just trying to define the protocol)

Too out there for me but I'd better listen again because I'm a notorious blockhead when it comes to new (for me) styles.

I suggest this one for the next participant, just because it is unlike anything else on the site and it really grew on me after a few listens.

OK KK

Interesting... I keep seeing Maude from "Harold and Maude" get her groove on, it's kind of turning me on...uhum, sorry. I love the bass, guitar interplay, and the folky 50s sorta storytelling musical vibe. Seems to have an celtic element sewn throughout. I dig it. Charming and frightening...

Good one Jeff ...

A touch of Wow ... the multi-colored raindrops rolled off the edge of inspirational abyss ... they came through and by and around and left with a lingering whisper that seemingly changed nothing ... yet, immersed in the children's playground were the hopes coming down the slide and the dreams riding the Merry - Go - Round ... and somehow I believe "I Could Be"

RE: Magoo - "Song Of Birds"

The song, itself is lovely. Well-constructed. Pretty melody. But the production gets stuck in my craw. The chirpy birdie noises are more distracting than soothing to me. And some of the other little flourishes do the same -- the cymbal splashes and tympani.
If you could leave the production alone and let the song stand for what it is (even the violins are fine), you would have a lovely, beautiful piece.

My addition:
Apollo Sunshine - Today Is the Day"

"Apollo Sunshine - Today Is the Day"

Wow, this song grows in intensity, starts almost folky, gets a little country, then rapid scales up thorugh rockabilly to psycobilly and maybe almost punk! Dropping back back to folk for just a moment be fore a big finish, excellent dynamics!

My next song sugestion

I've listened to Steve's last posted choice a few times now and it gets better and better.

As a Canadian from Ontario, I can relate to the place names. But mostly I love the chorus. So cute. "I'll show you the best places to go". Just set your old ears aside and let Mandi's jangly staccato do it's magic.

Thanks, Sam; when I clicked the link, I was quite pleased to see it was a Brian Booth tune. He became a friend and supporter, when I first came to this site. Even though he's taken a leave of absence for almost a year, I'm glad that his songs are still up. His English-folk songwriting style is always warm and expressive. A good soul. I hope he'll be back soon.
"Something to Say" is "a song about parting". As usual, Brian's words are to the point, but there's a feeling of yearning and regret just under the surface. I especially like the little lyrical twist at the end. A song that everybody can relate to, with some great harmonies and a line or two of a capella, for emphasis. Excellent song.

Like Duane, I haven't worked out how to put in a link yet, so here's the url for my choice:

Kevin White - "Lesson In Life"

There is a definite 70's singer/sonmgwriter vibe to this track. The lyric is reminiscent of a Jim Croce-type memoir tune. Looking back and looking forward. The arrangement is lovely. The staccatto strings in the chorus reminds me a bit of what Jeff Lynne did in the 80's and 90's with some of the George Harrison and Travelling Wilburys stuff; but not annoying like that.

My one criticism of the song is that, while the melody is strong, there is no real, jump-out-and-grab-you-by-the-throat killer hook. The "I learned the hard way" hook is good, but maybe there can be something else done with the arrangement to make it really POP. More backing vocals? A countermelody of some type?

Nonetheless a really solid tune, with good production values and a great singer/songwriter sensibility. (Say that 10 times fast.)

My Pick:
Vincenzo Ardilio - "Confirm My Suspicians"

You might like it.

Vincenzo Ardillo...I'd heard this before Todd at 'The Peoples Choice'...It reminds me a little of that 80s hit 'You Spin Me Round' by Dead Or Alive..Pop with a big eurodance beat..Its a pretty well written pop song, but its not really my thing if i'm honest..Altho undoubtedly very catchy,i think the hook would start annoying me after abit...

Let's get this chain back on track.

Colleen Brown. I really enjoyed it altho' the vocals weren't always clear. I love her singing in that range but she's gonna hafta watch the range of instruments that she uses to accompany and notch out the appropriate freq's or levels to keep the vocals articulate.

Try this one folks. Here again I'm going for something different rather than something I know you'll like.

Well nobody's played in over two hours so guess I'll take another turn.

This blog is a blast Steve because you participate at any time by simply listening to the last post. BTW I added LIFE WITHOUT LOLLY to a station (after I wiped up the tears. I shouldn't have listened that third time :-)

"How sweet.." Great choice Andy. I love the artists treatment - the fresh lilt and quasi-jazzy phrasing/chording. The second guitar added little for me -- would have preferred a second instrument -Hammond organ, wurlitzer piano, or even chromatic harmonica. Still he "made it his own" didn't he? Good, no great cover!

OK . Here's one that seemed to be a big hit when it was added to IAC. Very slick, and "downtown" but I love her voice and my wife comments on the accompaniment every time. Hope this doesn't ruin this blog with it's blatant commercial appeal.

Morcheeba - Everybody Loves a Loser

I'm familiar with some Morcheeba, but I hadn't heard this one. It starts off, and I've got a Shirley Bassey singing "Goldfinger" flashback. Great hook, and excellent arrangement. Are you sure this wasn't the title theme for a sixties movie? Really hip tune.

Hi Steve...I hope i've got this right but it doesn't look to me that your last offering got taken up ?....I may be wrong but anyway...i've taken up the baton and i'm running with it !.....

LARS MARS Fallin Hard.....a really cool song with a very humorous lyric...the more you listen to it the catchier it gets, sometimes it even reminds me of the 'Happy Days" theme tune, keep seeing The Fonze for some reason,it's incredibly retro and draws it's influences from practically every decade since Alan Freed gave us the term Rock & Roll...it's an incredibly infectious track and i noticed someone had mentioned Nick Lowe in a review and this could be straight out of his songbook, couldn't think of a greater compliment.....{that has to be one of your reviews, hey Steve ?}...

btw: this is a brilliant thread ,enabling people to unearth some gems buried in the treasure trove of IAC...well done Steve......

Quick comment re: Eric Lichter - I "met" Eric online and he had previously recorded "California" - I was blown away, he's truly fab and a devoted artist who is now running his own studio (Dirt Floor Studios) - anyway...I can't claim any influence on Eric whatsoever, his musical genius must be a combo of natural and the "classic rock" and "folk rock" vibe is clear (though somehow, Saints PRESERVE us, he adores KISS! LOL!!). As you know, I think, Steve, I ran off to Eric's place just as I was starting up at IAC and spent a night at his place, recording most of "Glen Hill" on day 1 and "Oh, Leigh" as a spontaneous jam on day 2...Eric's brilliant...I have and love his first solo album...sorry to keep breaking the rules. Gotta run off and finish up my voting...

Andrew Bird - "A Nervous Tic Motion To The Left" - I can't even believe how perfect it is I got this...settle in for a moment, please...

ANDREW BIRD - playing live with his drummer, they both multi-task to give a "full-band" effect. Andrew uses a looper pedal and builds his toonz piece by piece, layer by layer, alternating between violin, guitar, singing, whistling...his drummer actually takes his left hand off the drums to play KEYBOARDS!!!!

I can't pretend to fully comprehend Andrew's lyrics, but I love his songs...he's a musician's musician, if you ask me...a songwriter who clearly thinks in terms of "arrangment" and not just melody...creative sound textures, talented execution...thoughtful and compelling lyrics although I can't always "get them" all - partly because my first listening experience is always to the sounds - and there's much to listen to in his work...

AARON BOWEN and I were once enjoying a phone chat, and Aaron mentioned attending an Andrew Bird show and being aghast that the audience was outright impatient and rude. We both agreed that Andrew is phenomenally talented and worthy of the highest respect...

That leads of course to this FINE tune by a hugely talented artist who I've enjoyed chatting with (I even bought a used preamp from him, but my vocals still sound like ME and not HIM):

I could not find the song you were pointing me to, he has three on his page. When I cut and pasted, nothing came up I tried to find the song ID on his page as well, no Luck.

Wow another great find. The acoustic guitar lays a great pad in which to embellish with tasty instrumentation. His voice has a pinch of Paul Simon...very nice.

Very intelligent, creative, professional music here. Nice!

Here is one by Nicole Atkins "Skywriters"

I like the quirky arrangement, It reminds me of something that could have been on the "Pulp fiction" soundtrack.. the Guitar solo :)

This is a creative track that gives a nod to the past with a modern sound. True Indie spirit.

Sorry I confused things, Jeff - 'twas The Great Indoors who linked above to "A Nervous Tic Motion To The Left" - and my replying link was to Mr. Bowen's toon...glad you enjoyed it - Mr. Ison's "rules" now place the responsibility on you to provide the next song...

May I just point out that Aaron Bowen records himself - plays an astonishing array of instruments, and has absolutely golden tonsils (lol)...

Now I'm going to have to listen to all my tracks here ...

I am thrilled to be included in this list, and though I uploaded everything to IAC, I never actually listened to all the tracks I loaded.

As someone who does similar to Mr Bowen, though, tracking and mixing all my own material, so I'm VERY familiar with how things should sound.

I listened to the MP3 of "Lesson in life" and went, "Huh? That's not right." ... the tempo is all sped up, and the depth of the sound stage went to about 3 1/2 inches.

Listening to the original versus the upload on my system, the differences are quite noticeable to me. Correcting ... to be safe, I just uploaded a 256kbps version and listened, and it is as it should be.

Great thread idea, Steve. I'll be back to contribute later.

PUNCH ME HARD'S tune, VERSIMILITUDE...Somehow tentative but in-yer-face at the same time for the first 1:35...then it opens up a bit, though staying instrumental...Mr. Ison's station review encourages listeners to hang in there until the vocals hit, calling it "worth the wait" - I share the same impatience...but this is a very moody piece with interesting sonic textures and a confident pace and build...all in all, a groovy track worthy of the playlist here...though it's not really at all the same it evokes the Fab Four's "Sun King" to me in vibe...at least for a while...all hell breaks loose for a moment about 4:00 into the song - and I know Steve and I also share a preference for songs that are short and to the point - but somehow I don't mind so much the ongoing lingering nature of this one...of course if Hugo had been involved it would have some soaring guitar parts over the more repetitive parts...say, from 4:30ish to 5:30ish...5:46 and it sounds as though it's winding down, but I see there's plenty of song left...hmm...winding down VERY slowly...7 mins. and still some song left...what's next...ooh...weird...lol...into a bit of free-form recording fun...strange noises...heart beat...artist chatter...death...?

Hmm...dunno what to offer...lemme think a minute...

Thanks KK lol I was a bit bemused after finally getting my kayak ballad in last night and found myself engaging in impish off color behaviors soon after... on further reflection I hope the humor didn't come off as ungrateful for the gracious review on this thread. I'm a sick puppy and need help... and I love that tune by Ison among others, I wish there were more reviews on it... the guitar work alone is sublime IMO.

Rattlesnake - Mysterious popcorn space theater sty-lee. Cinema...moving pictures...it would be the running from or after part. Sonically tight, and timing spot on. I have to be in a mood for this ... it's mood intensive. This music is finely engineered I feel this kind of genre demands good engineering and this delivers. This music soars ones imagination unobtrusive and allows it's own story to tell within the listeners mind. Enjoy this composition very much and find it emotive on many abstract levels. It also stirs up memories of shrooming in in Goblin Valley...

Great choice Anjuli..My review of William Troniak
Fabulous blues tune..Groovy,intuitive,fun and sexy...Impossible not to love and impossible not to smile and move uncontrollably in your seat to...Has the spirit of Leadbelly,Skip James and the kinda atmospheric strange field-recorded old acoustic blues that is by far my favourite kind.Great performance..Wonderful..

Without (hopefully) getting too incestuous,i was listening to thisyesterday and thinking what a wonderful song it is..

Anjuli/Terry...Thanks for such kind words about Big Wheels. The only gear is a cheap strat copy and the effects processor in my vs840.
It started out as a purely acoustic tune-then i changed my mind when i'd bounced down all the acoustics(hence definite 'tuning' issues)....The guitaring -like any instrumental thing that requires anything more than basic strumming-was put down in loads of 3 second punch-ins thruout the track-a guitar hero i certainly am not lol..
Glad yuz both enjoyed it tho :)

Well it looks like me who's gonna have to enter this intensely brutal,skull-crushing place of Gremislavs.About as far removed from 'Melody' as its possible to get.Infact its a world where melody's probarbly punishable by instant firing squad, and creativity instead is expressed in bludgeoning rage and violent stop-start time sig changes delivered with ruthless military precision. Its music remade as extreme sport..Punishing,technically demanding, requiring intense life or death concentration and would probarbly make your eyes bleed if you were exposed to it at high volume for a reasonable time.I'm sure its as addictive as crack for the few who love it and would doubtless make the whole history of human music seem unbearably tame and tepid by comparison ....I wouldn't pretend to appreciate the aesthetic here, but do have a respect for its outsider quality and the fact there's a f*ck of alot to (rightfully) hate in this world if you set your mind to it..

UNTIL by Great Indoors is a simple song lyrically that is turned into an acoustic tour de force via its dramatic and imaginative arrangement. This high pressure accompaniment is quite remarkable in its delivery -- jaunty yet somewhat stilted, deeply harmonized yet slightly stark, rich in timbre and yet startling. Nothing trite or predictable here and devoid of mimicry. Brilliant work all around. Brilliant work all around!!

Jamie Randolph - Chanson Du Vampyre

Well, this song faked me out from beginning to the very end... When I first read the genre (Alt Country Theatrical Indie Goth Rock), I figured it was just a poke at the idea of having to box oneself in a genre. But he delivered every bit of it! No joke, no idle boast, but instead a compelling and chilling story set to an excellent band track. Great vox and phrasing. Soon to be a welcomed add to my Beyond the Blue Event Horizon station.

emblazoned on the mind and spirit somehow still. Subtle hypnotic groove with
cool background keys and confessional lyrics and vocals that leave the

upon that abstract love affair that was / was not.

'Waterloo'...everything about this song belongs and i don't believe i've ever heard
a steel guitar player as good as this one...kinda reminds me of David Lindley ..
not sure of the spelling, but he's the steel guitar player on a lot of Jackson Browne's
songs...and this singer is whispering her deepest secrets into the listeners ear...

Memory Lane.... Very cool distinctive folk song with Elliotts particular brand of sweetness with a strange edge and a superficially happy tune cloaking an atmosphere of underlying unease and spikey lyrics...Great vocal too

'Don't Stop' by The Pocketbooks: ..very witty and charming tongue-n-cheek lyrics
quite truthful on the positive side, feel good rhythms and melodic guitar and
piano runs ..cool and loose vocal harmonies to boot. A Fun song!

It's been a long week and I'm tired, but I'll be back for some reviewing after I've rested up. But it occurred to me that for new viewers and reviewers, we haven't provided a link to the station itself:

"Credo Cigalia" by Mirah and Spectratone International

Absolutely Trippy ! You could only get away with this if you had a voice like Mirah ! Very, very intrigueing and enticing at the same time, one can't help but be drawn in by this wonderful, fun filled carnival ride ... you want to say Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ... (at least I did) ...
I'm a sucker for Cello's too and this has some great Cello work and the ending is just fabulous ...

"Annabelle" by crack*a*jack*crow...characteristically unique and quirky, beautiful vocal performance by Anjuli...I'm wondering if this is a solo performance or collab with Brendan...sparse and sporadic saxes and keyboards lend it an ethereal quality that makes it move in fits and starts, but more smoothly than lurching...a sweetly sad song that pulls you in and makes you root for Annabelle and hope she finds the audience she deserves...

This is what I've always fantasized sex would be like with fly... I always knew he was a hopeless romantic... I only wish it lasted longer than 3 seconds...oh well... What a laid back dream of sober sounds that you know has been drinking but the timing is too damn good to admit it. I absolutely adore this track... it makes me want to go soak up some shade rays. This instrumental piece is singing sparsely while richly full in texture and feel. Emotive and resonating in the most delicious way... calming without making me panic that the cult is soon behind... I feel at ease but not enough to be bored. If you like this you will definitely enjoy Steve Ison's The Stars Are Never Really Distant... this is a bit more fusion-Esq with maybe even some Celtic/Beach Boys type elements... capturing a certain color scheme surrounding the whole tones that lend itself well to an iced gin and tonic on a glorious summer day. Man I do go on... sorry... love it... it's a platypus baby for sure

Cool! Haunted interior of an abandoned honky-tonk in the middle of nowhere. It's daytime though -- even weirder. Something is crawling out of the slew outback but I can't make out what it is. Tom Waits channels Dr. John.

Bat Lenny - Transcendence ...
One movement of a larger work (their Shawdowland Suite), fresh psychedelia from St. Paul, MN. This is one aspect of indie that artists other than electronic have not taken advantage of. Not having to tailor our work to label formuli, more of us could be working on larger concepts.
These guys are unafraid to use the freedom and independence (yes, that's where Indie comes from) of the small studio with no clock on the wall to create something mural sized... and succeeded.

And now: Am I Robot?

"Am I Robot" is a great toon. I like the way my empathy for the robot's "feelings" makes me laugh. Good synth arrangement and imaginative piece all around.

For my next post I've chosen a song that heard "by accident" and really liked it. I was surprised to find out the it was Larree's work. Obviously Laree's persona on IAC has been coloring my objectivity -- Larree's such a character that I seem to be more aware of his antics than his music sometimes -- that's not good, sorry Larree.

great simplicity and a curious innocence ...

Carl Schonbeck - Pull Out the Wires

Great little 80's-like new wave pop from Carl. Reminds me a bit of Richard X. Heyman. Great hook and a sentiment that I can relate to! ;-) I like the piano a lot, although I wish it were recorded a bit brighter tweaK UP those highs a bit, sir.

Excellent tune for fans of above mentioned Heyman, Graham Parker, and whatnot.

Oh Yeah! This is a very hip, down-tempo klezmer tune. The into sounds like Dave Brubeck, going klezmanic. The highlight of the piece for me (besides the great solo playing) is the wah-wah violin. Excellent! It's a great example of inspired klezmer jamming.

My choice is a cut from Tony Lowe- Willesdon Green Blues

sorry if i'm pulling up dated material.

I just got here so it's all new to me..

:)

This tony Lowe track is just lovely, A warm blues player with a great feel.
It's nice when an able player doesn't feel compelled to prove himself and can really play for the piece like this.
I like the tone, at first it was strange, this warm neck position pickup? sound that's just starting to break up, it's not a typical modern blues tone, but it grows on me quickly!
It's sentimental And then when the dynamics rise up later in the piece it's a big payoff.
I hear Jeff Beck in some of the phrasing maybe...
Really fantastic player.

This next one may be old news to you guys too, but I don't care because I LOVE THIS TRACK and I have great admiration for this songwriter.

"Leaving the Planet" is a great toon full of predictable self-pity and negative feelings. I like the repeat of the 5 to 4 which lifts it out of the usual (overdone) 12-bar pattern. I also dug the economy of the lyrics -- the story was told in a few lines.

Better Than Aliens-Silent REason..Interesting and creative leftfield indie pop/rock song that puts me in mind of XTC abit in its vocal stylings, jerking chords n push-pulling rythms(just seen you thought the same on their page Terry).I like the open song structure, unsaturated textures that can breathe (unusual for modern rock) and atmospheric sensibility-good track

Love this song

Corrientes - "Tiempo y Espacio"

My Spanish is very limited, so I'll keep my comments to the music, itself:

The song has an obvious reggae feel -- maybe a little too obvious at first. The arrangement, as a whole, it a bit too self-aware for me. But, on the plus side, the playing is ace. And the melody is affecting, as is the vocalist.... and that's what saves the song for me. I like this song.

I might have something more to say about this if I understood Spanish a bit better, but this is about the music. You speak Spanish, Steve? Is there something about the lyric, too?

My pick:
Happy Ashtray - "Starlight"

Nice one, Todd. "Starlight" by happy ashtray - nearly lost me with the opening (lol), as I prefer getting straight to the point...but when that opening chord was over and the acoustic guitars came in I was instantly hooked. Very cool vibe to this song, totally reminds me of The Band - this is a tune I'd really enjoy playing guitar on, and am enjoying a second listen as I type...this is really well done - I'd be proud if I could get drum sounds like that in my studio...oh yes...kudos.

Enjoyed a few listens to this one from the "new songs" list this morning...

The Sky's The Limit ... Steve April

Real nice tune ... a bit Dylanesque, a bit Donovanish, a lot Steve April ...
Simplistically simple arrangement that is a superbly charming background for the upbeat lyrics ... I like the way the vocal is stretched and teeters on the brink of "being in the half key" stretching out and bringing home the point that "The Sky's The Limit" ... and I like any song with a pom paa pa (not to mention bongo's) ... nice pick Hugo

Stoneman is an incredible talent -- versatile, powerful, totally professional. I liked the the old school vibe on this one a lot. After listening to about half the lyrics I began to wonder when the whining was gonna stop, and be replaced with something positive. It never happened. A great song, but not my fave by the Stone Man. He's got a ton of great toonz on his page. Go check him out.

May I suggest something 100% positive?
