Missed opportunities
I was reading some of the following quotes
Learn to listen, opportunity often knocks softly
Opportunities always look bigger going than coming.
And I started thinking has anyone realised that they missed an opportunity and how did they (do they) cope with the knowledge.
I once threw away a winning $250 000. lottery ticket. It was a week later when I realised. I knew the bin I had thrown it in and my mind started racing with thoughts of going to the tip and searching through the rubbish for it. But naturally this idea wasn't really feasible and I had to accept that the ticket was lost forever. I had quite a sick feeling in my stomach for a day or two but hey, what are you gonna do, build a bridge and get over it.
I still think about it though, every now and then, you know, how would life be now with an extra dose of cash. My own recording studio, 15 guitars and session musos at my beck and call, hey Clapton, I told you just play it as written sheeesh.................ok I'm back, so what about you did opportunity knock on your front door while you were out back mowing the lawn.

I've had a number of opportunities to work with people or gig etc., but the constraints I have on my time and location as a stay-at-home dad greatly limit my ability to field them. None of my opportunities have been close to your lottery ticket loss (whew!) and I've made a "lifestyle" choice which I'm content to live with. Sometimes I feel a little like Houdini though - trying something really challenging even without the extra constraints I've added...just hope nobody hits me with a sucker punch when I'm not expecting it...
Yeah - 250k would satisfy mucho GearLust...

Who was it that said "Success is simply prepardness meeting opportunity "
Sometimes we have oppertunity and are not prepared, and sometimes we are prepared without opportunity.
I've always said hard work always pays off. It might not be in the guise that you expected, but work in equals work out. In this biz, it's sometimes hard to loose the focus.

Hey niteshift, I think it was me that said that....no hang on.....no it wasn't......yeah I understand what you're saying......it's like this website......you could put your songs on here and check back in 6 months time to see how it went or.....you can work hard promoting the songs and know that more people are hearing and maybe even enjoying your music. My expectations aren't very high as far as fame and fortune from music, but the friendships and sheer pleasure I've gotten from playing music is priceless.

Yep, just about summed it up. You gotta play cos you have to, and it is what is in your soul. A little success here and there is always a cool buzz, but if you're in this game, it's because you choose to be and you take the thick with the thin.
I like that quote, in other words "get off your damn ass "

--interesting----sometimes our own predjudices blind us to opportunity----
like ----I would never have seen adds as a path to success ( I hate adds on TV) but doing sound for them has been fun and one add has lead to another----!!
Also when younger --I would have been embarresed to play at a funeral (wake)
Now having done this a few times---usually young folk who died tragically--they are some of the most "real" musical events I have experienced---etched forever in my mind----

There is always choices one missed opportunity may be the doorway to another. Too bad about the lotto ticket but think about the other side of the benifits. People begging for money-loosing friends over money.
It is best to strive for the things that really matter in life. When we think we missed something try not to spend too much time looking for it you might miss something ever better while you lament what was lost.

Rob, yeah, goota agree with the funeral thing. Many years ago I did the Maori (NZ)funeral thing, and just recently the Irish thing. Both involved about 5 days of mourning, but with an emphasis on the joyous, and the whole process was an act of rememberence, laughter, respect, and a clensing of the soul.
As they say, "Out of shit, flowers grow"
Missed opportunity doesn't exit, just our own stupid pre-concieved predudice.
