Songs you wish you'd written!
Over the years I've heard a lot of songs for the first time and thought, "Damn I wish I'd written that".

Top of my list would would be graet songs like:
1. Born to run - Bruce Springsteen
2. Lover you should've come over - Jeff Buckley
3. Always a woman - Billy Joel

What 3 songs would you most like to have penned?

and runner up

Don McLean - American Pie

Quote from Don McLean
“So when people ask me what American Pie means, I tell them it means I don't ever have to work again if I don't want to.”

Now that is a song I wish I'd written.

1. Porcupine Tree - The Sound of Muzak
2. Frank Zappa - St. Alphonso's Pancake Breakfast
3. Tom Petty - free Fallin'

Of course, in 5 minutes the list could be entirely different. Maybe a Louis Armstrong tune, or even a J.S. Bach piece.

The first one off the top of my head:
"Windfall" - Son Volt

But others are certainly:
"Cruel To Be Kind" - Nick Lowe
"Lola" - The Kinks
"Yesterday" - The Beatles
"Waterloo Sunset" - The Kinks

(I am completely with Steve I on the Kinks tip)
"You've Really Got a Hold On Me" - Smokey Robinson
"The Way You Do the Things You Do" - Smokey Robinson

Again, there was a period that Smokey could do no wrong. And, he is still one of the greatest songwriters who ever lived. Far too-often overlooked in conversations like these.

Wow, hmmm... well I'd more classify this as I wouldn't have minded writing these songs. I don't really WISH I'd written it. I'm happy these guys wrote it. I'm happy for them. Adds to my love and admiration for their collective body of work.

1. Surf's Up (by the Beach Boys)
2. Dogs (by Pink Floyd)
3. Hey Jude (by the Beatles)

Brilliant. You would then have also written about 1 tenth of everything else written since! Good choice.

Thanks for the mention of the songwriter, it's just that the other two songs I chose were written by the performers themselves but this was my favourite version of Without You. The Ham/Evans story is so sad and tragic, they never got the royalties that were due to them, check out Badfinger's back catalogue, these two were songwriters of the highest order and sadly didn't live to reap their just rewards.

Cheers
Paul

Todd - you beat me to it you trivia wonk! Great performance of a great song. Ham & Evans were quite a team, and Nilsson Schmilsson was the first album I ever bought.

Koz - this topic came up about a year ago as I recall - and one of my answers was Happy Birthday. I'm not saying you copied me, just that great minds... you know.

I dunno why I'm picking these 3 out of thousands, but...

21st Century Schizoid Man - King Crimson
Stranger By The Minute - Porcupine Tree
Four Sticks - Led Zeppelin

  3. Sunk Loto - Burning Bridges

"Do you know why its called four sticks?"
Actually, I do. It was called 'Four Sticks' because that's how many sticks John Bonham used on the drums in that song.
I think, from memory, he played that song with the blunt end of the sticks too.

I LOVE his drum sound. Roland have created an extremely realistic version of the Led Zep drum sound on V-Drums too. I'll see if I can get a clip together playing something using my 'Zeppy' kit on my V-Drums.
