Which Are the Best Written Songs at IAC?
Post them as you see it. I don't care about the production or recording or even the performance, but which are the actually well-written songs? Songs that are written sturdy enough that others could do them in different ways. That don't rely on a certain voice ability or certain production.

Curious about that.

Dunno whether these'll fit from your criteria Bob,but i love 'em :)

On This Side TINY VIPERS

I love this and how it suddenly shifts from that slightly ominous vibe to really major when
the arpegioed electric comes in.Like the sun coming out..Brilliant.
Think you need alot of creative freedom and musical intelligence to do stuff like that

What I wouldn't Do-Tony RUGALO
Terrible production (from alot of peoples standards-not mine) but sounds like a 100% standard to me

E.M.P.T.Y By THE CLIENTELE
Sounds so beautiful as a production i know, but is such a lovely song too.Its really special and rare thing to
create such a beautiful sunny, generous warm-hearted vibe in song imo.
I think thats got alot to do with how well its written - the melody n chords.the skill of the writer(s)-not just production

I never buy into that whole best thing, but I got my favorite songwriters here at iac and they are Steve Ison and Brendan OSullivan from The Great Indoors. Not all their songs apply to the following rule, but most can be dressed up or down. Steve Ison is a master of that retro 60's style yet his tunes could be performed in any time period. Brendan's songs are classics imo ... though he produces them with his quirky flair which I'm also partial to. Many of their songs could be performed and interpreted in a variety of ways, but what they both have in common is their ability to write a song, a solid tune from start to finish rich with melody, verse and chorus structures. Simple emotive, solid and supportive structures that are classic yet inventive in light of their own perspectives at the core essence of their tunes. The ability to write something which sounds like it's come before, yet is something new at the same time. That is brilliant song writing to me ... the ability to continue the traditions while creating something in a new way. And, well, they just write songs that do it for me... the kind of songs that stay with me long after I've listened ... so many songs are good, but they evaporate like vapid air when they're not playing... I love tunes that leave a memory with me in my heart. A tangible fingerprint that vibrates and resonates within my soul ( and a few other unmentionable places without ever having to get naked ) ...

Steve Ison

The Great Indoors

There are many songs I treasure here at iac from many artists, but these two are my favorite and for different reasons... as I listen to them the most. I usually avoid these threads, but today is what the hell day for me and I had five extra minutes to further self-destruct so ...

here's some bands -

Almost all Sugarplum Fairies songs are well written. I'd say that's true for Sully and Alphastates also. Kerry Dowling has some really well-written songs. And Via Audio. Loquat's Swingset Chain is well-written, gets me every time.

Bob, you should try Jill Wright's music if you get a chance. Here's one about Toulouse Lautrec.

Some of Bob Elliott's songs are well-written also, like Blue Water. :)

They are are all over the site......I don't buy into subjective Best of Lists....You are bound to leave some out, and in the end there is no definitive list. Just a bunch of submissions of individual taste that may or may not be representative.

This goes for the best of lists by Rolling Stone and others...

I will say these lists are good to point you towards someone you are not aware of. I won't name any however, I would leave too many out so I would rather keep it personal. We are talking about real people that roam these halls :)

Its very easy to say Dylan is better then Lennon, I won't alienate John :)

In the end I only have personal Opinion, to Me Lennon is the better Songwriter, however I know that is a ridiculous thing to say to those that are familiar with Dylan and hold his work in High regard.

In the end its just my Personal opinion...that's the problem with subjective lists. .... with Music, Subjective is the best way to go....

Its not a Bad Idea Bob, I just don't like the "Best " label.... change "Best" to "excellent" or even "Great"...... Those terms are de_scriptive without saying they are better then others.. :) I know I am rambling... see Lennons" 66 Christ apology speech :)

This is a good post to point people in the direction of new songs or Artists that may have been missed.

as I see it in no particular order:

Had Enough by Simpleton
The Greenback Effect by Antagen
Cary's Here by Hop on Pop
Sausage by Showdown
Berwick Hills 90210 by The Hitchers

I'm a melody junkie so yeah that's why. I dunno about doing these in different ways. oh well.

Yeah Bob, what Larree said.

I think it's absurd that we can't just state our favorites without fear of hurting someone's feelings. That's ridiculous, even if you claim your faves to be the best than so what ! Everyone has their favorites and if my stating my favorites makes some folks not want to listen to me than so be it, I don't really care.

I'm quite sure I'm not Steve Ison's favorite artist or songwriter but that doesn't make me stop listening to his great tunes, and if it did than I wasn't listening to him for the right reasons... and I'm pretty sure I'm not The Great Indoors favorite songwriter here either but waaaaaaaa !!! ha ha ha

By the way Brendan, I don't think anyone is going to check out your page hahaha!

... and Bob, great songs you write ( I sound like yoda there ... " Great songs... you write " ) Anyway, blah blah blah Love and love and when ya run out of love love some more dammit ! bye

There are a lot.
And, off the top of my head... just a few... (not including my own ;-) )

Steve Ison - The Strangest Feeling
Bob Elliott - As the Water Started To Rise
Ray Porter - Blues In Your Soul
Gaslight District - Polyanna
Hugh Hamilton - The Lonesome Road
Invisible Inc - Sun Today

And those are just the most-visible choices; there are about a million more that I know that I am forgetting.

This is a talented bunch here.

I think the best songs written on here by a country mile are by 'The Great Indoors' ..... that may be a bit biased but honesty is the best policy .... i'm tired of being humble ... i also think the second best songwriter on here is a guy called 'Brendan Osullivan' but he's too modest to blow his own trumpet,so i'll do it for him ..... i also think this best of lists are great, especially when i'm at the top of them ...

Love and pieces,
Brendan

Btw ... i am going to quit the pipeline if you all don't agree with me ... i'm at the tipping point ... i think ? ...

I don't mind BEST, GREATEST, THE SHIT : ) as a de_scription... but prefer "ONE of the BEST", "ONE of the GREATEST", or "THE SHIT"... ha ha

But opinions are just that, opinions. And to me, it seems obvious that it is impossible to name THE ABSOLUTE BEST on IAC or anywhere for that matter... its always gonna be limited by personal taste and exposure (hmmm... ya know, how many IAC artists has everyone personally listened to, before making such a claim).

the humor... really, think about it... "The sexiest man in the world" (People Magazine - by whose standards... and have we had a chance to see EVERY single man in the world, before deciding this... funny stuff). Even the world series is a pretty funny title, considering the whole world doesn't compete.. hahaha.

For myself, I've just barely scratched the surface here at IAC. I've heard some amazing songs, and some pretty crappy songs... but that's just my opinion. I like to think that my own music is pretty top-notch, but no one mentioned me : (

SO WHAT... I write what comes through me. I play because I HAVE to play... just like most folks here. Plus, I have a ton of music that no one here has ever heard.

When my first (and only) EP was released in 2006, I made the mistake of sending them everywhere, as well as, off to our local paper for review... long story short... they tore us apart. But they were so incorrect and brief in their de_scription of the disc and songs (like Waterloo, way off, what THEY thought the song meant)... that it seemed that the critic barely even listened. It hurt real bad initially. I didn't know any better. BUT I learned a huge lesson... and will NEVER go that route again. Not that I don't appreciate honest heart-felt critique... trust me, I have a number of criticisms of my first project... BUT never, will I give my energy away to be "approved", "loved", or "glorified"... its just an opinion and nothing more. If you believe the good reviews, you have to believe the bad ones... so NO reviews for me... ha ha ha.

And I honestly don't like everything I've heard here... I don't like every song that one artist has written either... BUT there are some real treasures out here too.... some truly fantastic songs... in particular...

"Existential Praise" by Dick Aven and "Where Is Your Grace" by Anjuli

There's plenty more... Steve, Hugh, Todd, Silverwood, Phlegm all have some fantastic music... just to name a few. But I have yet to travel much deeper into the IAC depths to discover more.

just be sincere... write it, sing it, play it, pray it... each song has a purpose of its own... even if only for the free therapy of your own soul.

Bob, I regret to say that I do not sing on my songs but I have a talent for picking the right singers for the right songs and producing and coaching them exactly how I want the songs sung. I do sing but my voice is shot and I only have the vocal stamina to teach the songs to the singers but I can't make it through a long session without having something close to an asthma attack. The lack of lung power and the strain on my throat also causes me to go off pitch quite a bit. I play all the instruments on most songs and leave the singing to the pros. Not being the singer allows me to spend more time and energy on writing, producing and playing. I accent my strengths, not my weakneses. Some people have a problem letting other people sing their songs because of the "ego" thing. But I never wanted to be a rock star. I only want to write songs for stars or potential stars. I'd love to have fortune, but fame sucks.

I agree with the Tony Rugolo pick.

I remember in the late 80's playing many of the same clubs around Orange County and up in LA that Tony's band The Question played. They were the one band other than the Untouchables that I really thought would be picked up by IRS and ride an REM like wave. It wasn't to be unfortunately. They had this one song called "Shall Be Love" that was put out by Warf Rat records that just rocks, pure power pop, their sound was very very close to the 65 era Who, stage-presence and everything. "Distance Appart" was my favorite song of theirs, mostly for the 12 string Rickenbacker and a cranked Marshall stack they had going. Yeah, they were something, and I think they are still playing. Tony is on bass now, but he was one hell of a guitar player when I saw them.

You can hear some more of their stuff on their myspace page:

Best on IAC? How 'bout Pete Townshend?

Is he REALLY an indie Artist though?

I researched it, and there WAS a rolling stone Magazine article, where a PROMO for his latest TUNE mentioned IAC as THE definitive source.

SO it seems like he has some kind of vested interest here.

DOes anybody know if this is true?

STILL -- probably in the top 10 of ALL IACers, undiscovered included.

IF Pete really is up in here as an indie artist like us, because of LACK of corporate backing, than FOLKS, we're in some GOOD company! -pHLeGm

Townshend doesn't have any interest in the site other than he's a big supporter of indies and he wanted to expose his music to another group of people. One of our co-founders was an acquaintance of his from when they first came to America in the 60s and brought him to the site.

You weren't around during the first Golden Kayaks hubbub but I gotta tell you there was a truly amazing moment. One of the bands that went up against Rachel and Pete in the Indie Song of the Year thing had a manager and some fans who went to Pete's and Rachel's blog to razz them. It got a little feisty. Finally Pete posted a blog which basically commented to these folks that he's in the Golden Kayaks and now he really wants to win !

Here's Pete and Rachel at the 1st Golden Kayaks if you never heard it.

It normally starts sometime after the first of the year but not sure exactly how it's going to work this year, that remains to be discussed by admin. In the past there have been 2 separate parts, one is based on KIAC Big 50, the larger is nominations and votes by Academy members (prime artists)
