Tom O'Brien is a Best Friend and A Musical Wonder...
Not to mention he is a deep painter... But he finally got a recorder and did his first recordings. They're drenched in great harmony and he's melodic to the core. Check out my friend of twenty years.

He's not a deep tuner, but I like the tune.

OK, I like all the tunes, but please! Teach the guy to tune a guitar. No disrespect intended, and I hate being the default ass here since no one else will, ass usual, but comon, the outta tune guitars are very distracting. These tunes deserve better. The vocals are fine, which is unusual for such crappy guitars.

But isn't it strange how he gets the two most important things so right when most people get everything else but can't write a song or sing one? Trips me out.

He hasn't ever recorded by himself before...

I do hear that you dig the tunes, and that's what's of prime importance to me. Either I have a naive ear, or I was just in a hurry, but I didn't realize about the tuning thing. I guess I'm not the recording/playing technician I could be. Just a note - on "Change the World" my 1st E string is tuned to E flat, so that leads to a little dissonance here and there - that might be what you're hearing. And I don't even have a chromatic tuner, so the E flat is just a guess. And there's one song, I can't remember which, where I play an E major on one guitar while playing an A major on another. You gotta push the boundaries sometimes.

But I appreciate your honesty. Sometimes friends won't tell you the truth if they think it's going to hurt. What do other strangers think? Am I that out of tune? What do you hear, Bob?

Out of tune? Yeah, on a lot of it, but your writing and singing are top notch, so I can get past the tuning. Good writing and singing are rare traits and the most central things to me.

However, these are your first recordings on your own, and you can push them further if you choose, especially if your vocals are not on the same tracks as your guitars.

It's all in what you want. I listen a lot to your album as it is, but I know you can do more with it if you want.

For instance, yes, redoing some guitars using a tuner . One thing I've learned about multi tracking is that your best bet is a tuner because as you pile on things and they are slightly off, it adds up.

But I can think of several people that would probably love to play on these if you like the idea of the sound you get from a mix of people. Some I know in real life, others on the net, but when material is good talented people like to contribute. I once put a song up for internet collab, and I think about ten people laid tracks on it. Was pretty cool, actually. I mean to do something like that again some time, but I get carried away on my own and I'm not patient to wait for others to do their parts if I'm on a roll.

I have not pushed any of these thoughts about adding to or changing your album because, as I said, I already listen to the album a lot and enjoy it. But you know, my imagination runs far, and I can hear chances to do lots of things retaining all those excellent vocals if they are on separate tracks.

But see, your recording energy may be something you want to point at new songs(though with songs this well written, you'd never be wasting time working on these here).

If those vocals and harmonies are all on separate tracks, though, I'd say you have some of the best material for people to get creative on, and I think many fine musicians would look at it as a pleasure and intruiging. Your chord structures and harmonic patterns are the kind of thing that would get the interest of many good musicians.

And that is what I truly think.

I thought the tuning thing was on purpose ... sorry to the "in-tune" freaks ... but I like it ... It adds to the track IMO ... but then again ... who am I ?

"Sometimes friends won't tell you the truth if they think it's going to hurt."

And that's why I mentioned it, because no one else was. No disrespect intended whatsoever, Tom. I like the tunes. They deserve to be in tune :)

See, this site has many many songcrafters who can see through any deficiencies in the song's presentation - but the public is mostly not like that. They may not know what is wrong, but they'll know something is.

Just trying to help. er, sometimes I help in this way by devastating somebody, but I hope that hasn't happened here.

It's cool Dan. Everything I learn and experience makes me stronger, and I'm thankful for it. Sometimes I think I would like nothing better than for someone who really has an audience to pick up one of my songs and say, "I could really make this work." I guess the presentation is like Herman Melvillle having hard to read handwriting. It didn't stop him from writing Moby Dick. Does that make any sense?
