I get it Bob...... I don;t agree with "your" assessment......at all....

And Yes sir I have heard him..... plenty. Sure he is a great artist, he has his place in History...but to say he is the best singer you have heard??? I hate his voice, everything about it.....and yes that is "MY" opinion.

So, you posted here, I gave you a response....and you replied back to me in an offhand way.

Is there a reason you posted it, do you want a response??? Please enamor me with your reasons Bob, ...or are you waiting for more people to disagree with you before you let us know?

Cool.....

I would say your own voice has alot of "character" that fits your tunes well, maybe you are hearing him the same way and that is what is important to you.

Lets just say ol Mr.Dylan would suck as a Lead singer in a cover band :) But it works for his own tunage.

Peace...

Jeff

The arguments here against are many and are obvious.
In defense of Bob (both Bobs), while most people equate the two, there IS a difference between having a great voice and being a great singer. And they are not dependent upon one another.

In many ways, I will agree with Bob E. Dylan does more with what he's got, than a lot of other folks could dream of doing with a beautiful set of pipes.

In fact, a lot of folks who have beautiful voices, get lazy about their singing, and simply rely on the sound of the instrument, itself to get them through.

It's like the difference between your 15-year-old nephew playing a '59 Gold Top Les Paul through a custom, hand-built amplifier, versus Glenn Gould playing a toy piano.

So yeah, Bobby D. is, in fact, a GREAT singer.

Todd, Take his material out of the equation...... all of it. I believe it is coloring your opinion...as is his legendary status.

To me a "Singer" includes many items besides voice and ability to hit notes... Its passion, Rhythm, timbre, etc....

I can find twenty people on this site who are better singers then Bob...... I guess to me "Great" is a term I do not use loosely.

He is an aquired taste... I do believe if you take out his impact as an artist, his catalog, and his Icon Status you will find a mediocre singer at best.... that grates on far more people then he pleases.

But, as Bob E pointed out...This is a personal opinion and as such it cannot be refuted....

I have taken the material out of the equation... and still believe that he is a great singer. How he uses the gravelly, abortion of a voice that he has, he uses extremely well. His phrasing. His passion.

No, the timbre is NOT good. But that has nothing to do with anything, except what God gave him.

Also, take a listen to several songs in a row, from different albums. His voice on "Blowin' in the Wind" sounds nothing like the person who is singing "Lay Lady Lay" who sounds nothing like the person who is singing "Tangled Up In Blue". And, it's not just the song.

Bobby D. would not be my pick for best singer ever, either. But he is a helluva lot better than most people give him credit for. As I said, it's what he does with what he's been given.

Well we wholly disagree, to me Timbre has alot to to with being a "great singer"

Not sure you have taken his material out of the equation, his phrasing and passion are fully connected to his classic songs. The mark of a great singer is that they can sing a variety of songs..both their own, and other artists.

As for "Lay Lady Lay" I agree with you, It sounds nothing like him...are we sure its really him? :) anyone have a live video of him singing it? I have no idea why he would not use that voice on other songs instead of constantly giving us that pathetic drawl that is often caricatured for comic effect.

A great singer should not have an "abortion" of a voice. Now if he was labled an "Effective Singer" I would agree with you there....

I am not a huge fan of Dylan, so you can figure that into the equation.

Its comes down to what you enjoy, and what you are into. Indian singers (from India) have millions of fans who love them, when I hear them I wince... case in point.

Labeling someone "Great" is highly subjective. Some think Elvis was a Great Singer, others view him as a pathetic, drug addicted, fat buffoon.

Regards,

Jeff

A lot of people bitch about Neil Young's singing also.

Dylan is mystifying. I've heard him caress his songs at times where he is so good he's almost otherworldly. Other times he sings in such an unaffected halfassed manner that he seems like somebody is blackmailing him or something to make him open his mouth.

Jeff, do you find Celine Dion to be a good singer ?

I more agree with Bob here than disagree but I'm not quite sure what we're talking about here can be defined as simply as "singing". What this is about is a direct emotive link from the brain and soul to the vocals. It's not really the art of singing per se, rather it's the art of expressing one's own song, a personal creation. Those who are not songwriters need not apply. :)

I believe it is his ability to capture the essence of the story he is telling through song and words and projects the same through his interpretation , I dont think he would be able to sing too much of anyones else songs, he just does what he is good at, doing his thing. It is not the texture of his vocals that sets him apart, I would consider him adequate as a singer, nothing spectacular, but he is much more then a singer/performer/entertainer, he embodies the songs nature that tonal quality or color that Dylan possesses is unique to him alone, but it is his ability to draw you into what he is expressing as he shares the stories. It is how the song is him and about his experiences and how he weaves it so well in his lyrics and melody

The above is what I would use in my classes or at university.BS baffles brains

In other words, he is a great songwriter/storyteller

Perhaps we are caught up on the definition of "Singer" as it is used here.

To me you Sing with your Voice, it is musical.....and I rate it by the ability to hit notes on pitch, with a decent range, a pleasing timbre., with emotion and excellent phrasing/rhythm... I believe Dylan fails on all of these. except for emotion and passion.

Now is he a Great Artist??? Yes....his voice is part of his art and it works I just don't rate him a "great" singer.... just me.

Young is another great Artist, with an interesting voice full of character...I would not rate him great "singer"

There are many great artists who are not very good singers, but they marry their voices to the songs in a creative, passionate way that works far beyond the ability to "sing"

Now we can get caught up in semantics with the definition of "sing" it means many things to different people. To some..the Heart "sings".

Dion? Yes she is an excellent "singer" in the traditional definition... , but I can't stand her....it goes beyond her voice...its more her material, demeanor, and personality that rubs me the wrong way.

As with songs and styles, this is a subjective question and there is no right or wrong answer. Bob E demonstrated this when he indicated the difference between our individual, personal opinions.

Yeah, what Jeff said...

Are you just trying to stir up a hornets' nest, Bob? You did that for sure.

So, you owe us... what makes Dylan the best singer? Is it because he kind of sounds like you sometimes? LOL.

What Dylan does is sing songs. The way it sounds to me when he sings is some of the best singing I ever heard. (up to at least 1975 and occasionally after).

Dylan is someone who knew he'd been given a great voice, and he went forward with it without care for whatever this one or that one thought.

I love the timbre, the tone, the phrasing...

It's interesting how many people say Celine Dion has a great voice but they hate to hear it. Like when Mark Twain said about some composer's music that it was better than it sounded.

I think his voice could have sounded just as good on very many covers depending on if he connected with the song or not.

I think he was a great singer...and there are ways in which I can't think of anyone who touches him. I don't mean it with an asterisk beside it, I just flat out think his voice was a national treasure.

Not that I don't love the voices of a multitude of folks, I really do...

Can't think of anyone more believable.

I don't really get how one could listen to "Desolation Row" and not feel a great voice.

I think Freddie Mercury deserves mention here.

Geoff Tate of Queensryche is another fav of mine.

I think both are worlds ahead of Dylan.

That's just MY opinion.

Hey Evil Grin
for sure Freddie was a superb singer and could do about anything.I agree
But Dylan is something special as is Pete Seeger, and Joan Baez, they changed the landscape of songwriting and performing...they were the pioneers in a way for folk music and Dylan just became an innovator by stepping outside of the expectations accepted by the folkers who thought his foray into the amped up folk rock thing was sacrilege,,. he stands alone as one willing to sacrifice his existing career for something different.
