boy, too bad you don't listen to anything good! ;)

(that was a big time joke)

side note..."mr. tough" on the yo la tengo album "i am not afraid of you and i will beat your ass" has been in pretty much constant rotation here. i LOVE the chorusy/slightly out of tune upright(?) piano on there- particularly the "one-finger" style solo!

Ahh, I like that you threw a little Mingus a few days ago. The greatest jazz bassist ever in my opinion. There's always guys who are faster or what have you like Jaco Pastorius who is also sick! But Mingus has a special place in my heart.

in addition to being one of, if not the, finest jazz bassists (i'll throw in a vote for charnett moffet- ornette's bass player for a time), mingus was also one of th greatest jazz/third stream composers ever! not a bad cv...

listening to "better git hit in yo' soul!" was/is a religious experience for me.

(grabs mingus vinyl. leans back. closes eyes. ecstatic.)

Here's one I added late: a Thin Lizzy mix a friend made for me.

But, allow me to illuminate:
Bongwater was the project of Shimmydisc Records owner Kramer, with actress/chantuse/general freak Ann Magnusson on vocals.

Jason Isbell was a member of Drive-By Truckers, until he went solo just last year. Look for the video of him performing "Dress Blues" live over at YouTube, if you want to be completely devestated by a song. Incredible.

Trakan is a labelmate of mine. There are samples over at the MP3 page at www.spadekittyrecords.com, if you're curious.

So, I hope that this illuminates. And that you dig further and find something that you love.

This band is my best friend James Avallone and his marine buddy Isaac singing and playing acoustic stuck on a boat in the middle of the mediteranean sea back in 1998. They have a myspace page but I thought I'd make him a page here too.

Brinsley Schwarz - Cruel To Be Kind (Live @ the BBC)
It's Nick Lowe and Ian Gomm's early-70's band and, damn am I sad that I never got to see them live. They are just... amazing. This live document also contains an early take on the title track, which became a hit for Nick in 1979.

I was at the St. Kilda festival in Melbourne last weekend and saw the Hoodoo's live on the beach stage. It's been YEARS since I last saw them and they are still just as good as they have ever been.
I had a chat to their sound engineer before the show too and we chatted about studio recording and mastering. He'd be a cool guy to sit next to on a plane flight. :-)

Have the voices in yer cranium and the ringing in your aural cavities gone away? Or is it a permanent condition...?

I tried my hand at a couple of Nilsson toonz when I was learning some new gear. In my experience, a Universal Audio LA-610 channel strip with an AKG C414 goes a long way to capturing that kind of tone.

Man, could that dude SING.

Jim Ford - The Sounds Of Our Time

From the liner notes:
"He is Sly Stone's best friend and Nick Lowe's biggesst musical influence. Aretha Franklin, Bobby Womack, and The Temptations have all recorded his songs. But after only one mythical album in 1969... he disappeared."

Oh, and he also happened to have written what is -- arguably -- the greatest rock n' roll song of all-time ("Ju Ju Man").
-- my words.
(I only wish that song were included on this collection.)

Pique your interest?

Needless to say, I am listening to this now!

But a new comp. was just released on the same label, just a week or so ago. I'll probably pick that up at some point, too.

And, if you haven't, you really need to hear "Ju Ju Man". It's ripe for a Hugo version. Although Brinsley Schwarz' version sounds pretty definitave to me.

Still... best. Rock n' roll song. Ever.

I'm not familiar with "Ju Ju Man" - pretty strong words, Amigo, "best ever" - wow. I might have to go with the original Sun 45 of Jerry Lee Lewis doing "Great Balls of Fire" as a first consideration for that lofty title...not sure though, I have great difficulty with the whole "ranking" thing. More of a "yay or nay" kinda listener...

MUSIC FROM BIG PINK - 1 cd
ROCk OF AGES - 2 cd's

They both have lots of "bonus tracks" so I'm sure it will be plenty of excellent listenin'. There's a bit of song overlap, but I don't think too much.

spin 'Burning Airlines' right now and hear 'sweet Regina's' tale of espionage in
the air and on the ground....still, like Brian...."I somehow can't imagine her just
planting rice all day"...."Maybe she will do a little spying, with micro-cameras
hidden in her hair."....HA HA HA....I simply love his wacky, melodic vocal runs....
almost like a children's fairy-tale....and i still laugh my ass off and sing along
to 'The Fat Lady Of Limbourg'....I bought it when it came out and it's STILL
'ahead of it's time'!...ok...i'm done with my Eno worship for the day... heh...heh
