Pick a Cover for another IAC Musician
Title is self-explanatory. List some songs that you think other IAC folks would do justice to.
So, if you don't know the songs listed, LOOK 'EM UP!!! (Or ask the person who listed it.)

I'll start.

•Jillianne - Money Changes Everything (Cyndi Lauper)

•Hugh Hamilton - With My Face On the Floor (Emmitt Rhodes)

•Ainjel Emme - Jolene (Dolly Parton)

•Slilmdog - Pomp & Pride (Toots & the Maytalls)

•Ray Porter - Cathy's Clown (Everly Brothers)

•Father Time - 3 Bells In a Row (Tenpole Tudor)

and the capper...
•Larree - Born A Woman (Sandy Posey)

Actually, here's a play from the Steve Ison Pipeline playbook:
Whoever posted before you, go listen to THEIR music and then pick a THOUGHTFUL cover for them, based upon what tune(s) you think they would do justice.

That should make this a bit more interesting, and get more folks involved outside of the small group of regular posters.

And if we have enough folks who actually go ahead and try these tunes, I'll compile them onto a dedicated station.

Now, do it!

Checking out "Pomp & Pride" while typing this...I could do a remix of this with 2mental & NOBULL about standing for yourself...TOO COOL!!! Good choice Todd!!! I'd leave the reggae beat with a little more snare hit and a little more bass...Leave the chorus as is.

Interesting blog idea, Todd, thanks for including me. I'll have a listen to that song by Mr. Rhodes if I can find it, and I'll "play by the rules" later on, when I have time to do it properly. Someone mentioned him to me a couple of years ago and I had the quickest of listens - I remember liking what I heard but for some reason I never followed through with a proper investigation. Might have been sidetracked by that Harry Nilsson thang...

I wanna hear Hop on Pop do an XTC song! Here's a few more to imagine:

Hop on Pop - Scissor Man (XTC)

Kozy Kings - Love Grapes (The Swirling Eddies) (good luck finding that one!)

Jeff Allen Myers - Harlequin (Genesis)

Great Central - Moonbeam Song (Harry Nilsson)

The Man With No Band - Sossity, You're a Woman (Jethro Tull)

srm - Red (King Crimson)

AAH Steggie, good one! Harlequin .

Came the night a mist dissolved the trees
And in the broken light colours fly, fading by.
Pale and cold as figures fill the glade
Grey is the web they spin, on and on, and on and on.
Through the flame… still summer lingers on
Though her pictures soon shatter.

All, always the same.
But there appears in the shades of dawning,
Though your eyes are dim,
All of the pieces in the sky.

There was once a harvest in this land.
Reap from the turquoise sky, harlequin, harlequin,
Dancing round, three children fill the glade,
Theirs was the laughter in the winding stream, and in between.
Close your talk, the picture fades again
From the flames in the firelight.

Stegor- I envy your confidence in me. Actually, I've had some thoughts about doing "One More Red Nightmare", so there was some more similarity in thinking.

Here are a few suggestions (I have others):

The Code - "Set the House Ablaze" (The Jam- yes, I'm still listening)

Stegor/Bat Lenny - "King's Lead Hat" or "Julie With" (Eno- differing tunes, but I'd like to hear the 'Northern Psychedelia' version of some Eno)

You have a lot of confidence in me... XTC?!?! I love 'em, but never even thought to attempt one of their tunes. But I do love that one. Maybe I'll give it the old acoustic shot.
Oh, and I'd like to hear you tackle.... "Lucifer Sam" (Pink Floyd).

FT:
I think the Elvis song is "Every Day I Write the Book". Is that the one? Although there is a great Nick Lowe song called "When I Write the Book", which I also love.

And, I'll get you a link to that Tenpole Tudor song.

Well you made me sit through a manic version of Cindi singing Money changes everything, on you Tube ha ha. I agree that we both have big gobs and border on hysterics a little :) I'm actually in the process of developing a slightly Rockier, aggressive persona for a couple of songs but I'm not big on covers...we shall see. Wow - this is cool!

Jeff - I've listened to Harllequin thousands of times but never read the lyrics. Gabriel sure knew how to paint with words.

srm - Those two Eno songs exemplify both poles of the Eno Brain (Brain onE) and they would both be perfect for Bat Lenny.

Todd - I've suggested Lucifer Sam to the other guys several times but haven't convinced them yet. It's one of those songs that is too perfect in it's original state. Still, what a blast it would be to try!

Jillianne - How could I forget you? You must do a Kate Bush song. Your "Windswept" is thematically very close to her "Watching You Without Me", but from the perspective of the perspective of the one who left. A real tear jerker. Do that!

OK, You Tube are getting plenty of business from me. Wow Stegor, thanks for pointing that one out - I just loved the simplicity yet complicity of the backing (I know you'll understand that ha) You have inspired me to try something similar and as you say the sentiments are similar to Windswept.

I wish I knew more well known performers and songs so I could suggest covers for others

I've been having a youtube exploration of Emitt Rhodes, Todd...I'm flattered, that's for sure. Emitt's story is one of a do-it-yourselfer who got rolled over and crushed by labels...sad story...

Considering my penchant for covering the Beatles, it might seem odd to say that Emitt's stuff is just so perfectly "Emitt" that to cover it seems like an intrusion. But I might buy some (lol). I'm having the sensation I had a couple of years ago when I first had a listen, that if I didn't know who it was I'd guess it was solo McCartney...

Here's a lovely bit of ER music:

The saddest thing is that Emitt would appear to still be living and making music - just doing so in seclusion. He oughta be here.

I found one to cover though...here it is...if I had the drums here I'd post it tomorrow. Might take til June. I'll send you a copy when it's done, Todd...lol...

I'm stumped by a lyric - can anybody fill in this blank on "Tame The Lion"?

"Are those that die so soon forgotten,
That we won't miss one more?
This sacred life is.......
............................end this war"

It happens a couple times in the song - I've listened a dozen times and can't get it.

Damn! First Crimson, and now Zappa- I'm screwed! Actually the hardest part about "Don't Eat the Yellow Snow" is not going on to the next song ("Nanook Rubs It"), and the next...

A few more possibilities:

Ray Porter - Tobacco Road (the Animals)

Hugh Hamilton - Infrared and Ultraviolet (Utopia)

Todd (Hop on Pop) - Friday on My Mind (the Easybeats)

Stegor/Bat Lenny - Return of the Giant Hogweed (Genesis- in case you can't decide which Eno tune to do).

...that's enough for now- I've got to see if I can figure out some guitar parts.

Great idea, but I can't help but feel that the essence of IAC is being missed in this exercise (BTW, I always loved Emmit Rhodes, he's now sort of an LA shut-in....but I digress!) Why aren't you asking folks to do covers of other IAC artists. Why the homage to the commerciati, when there's so many fine tunes here to cover! It would seem the natural thing to hear an Ison cover of a Lars Mars song, or Larree covering Hugh....just a thought....

thanks steve as well for suggesting the animals track, i've never heard it but i'll look it up.

trying to think of some suggestions myself.

hugh hamilton covering "warm and beautiful" from paul mccartneys
speed of sound album or "everynight" from mccartney 1

squrly murly covering the pretenders "i'll stand by you"

i'll be back with more.

Kurt..I'd prob cover 'Middle Of The Night' if i was gonna do a Lars Mars tune...:)

I think Gavin of Great Central could do a good cover of this song by Sagittarius...But reckon it'd be difficult to make better than it already is-and it'd be a stack of work!

Message to Kurt - I was REFRAINING from assigning covers of MY OWN tunes to everybody else...lol...but YOU ARE CORRECT and I proudly sport three covers of other IAC artists (Ray Porter, Steve Ison, Steve April) and a bunch of collabs with other IAC folks, and, as far as I'm concerned - the more the merrier...

"E" covered my tune "The Lonesome Road" - which was a first for me - and a real thrill. A real blues man singing my bluesy tune. Brought a tear to my eye, and that's no joke.

Absoloutely it would be a great idea. And I did not discount that option. But I did not want it to be specifically IAC covers IAC, as there are too many egos involved, as it is.You know how we artists are -- no matter how cool.

But I started it with outside artists also because I like to hear how others take on songs that we all (or some of us) already know.

But yes, IAC does IAC would be cool and, in fact, already has been cool. Check it!!!

AWESOME ! I watched a vintage video of FEAR doin' that tune on Saturday Nite Live a couple of nites ago! They were badass in their day!

BUT, alas, I don't have the monies for licensing this cover.

So I'll just continue to do my OWN music for now (and sneak in a few covers at house parties & the like)....

I like the idea presented a few comments ago about collaborating & doing covers of EACH other's original songs on IACMUSIC. Of course I would pick Dano Johnston, Tom Waits or David Lowry; but I'm STILL not clear as to whether they are in ACTUALITY a part of this community or just in spirit. =:- 0 -phlegm

Glad this thread is active again, I'd lost it.

Stegor -- you are correct, the Swirling Eddies are right up my alley. i had a great time checking them out last week. I think I'll try "My Cardboard Box" from their last album. I farted around with it a bit on the acoustic and I'm pretty sure I can handle it. I'm up to axles right now with home renovations, my job (overtime), nine new songs I'm trying to record as well as originals for the cover band and new covers for our June 6th gig. I'm getting stressed but this is such a great idea Todd has I feel obliged to try at some point. Oh yeah. I also must go back to Thunder Bay and clear my house out for the new owner. Yikes, looks pretty sketchy, but thanks for thinking of me. Best to all participants.

i'm a massive fan of sagitarius, so i can't wait to listen to which track you've picked (E is watching 'ugly betty'), i don't know the 'moonbeam' track but i'm trying to locate it, interesting.

before i try either song, what is the score about getting clearance, is it worth me making the effort?

EDIT: ha, cheers, steve, very flattering, but if i could even replicate a 1000th of that track i'd be a millionaire by now! pure class, an amazing track.

now, the nilsson track, 4 chords, that's more my level these days!

I spent a few hours when I could tracking some axes and trying to sing TAME THE LION - seriously, that dude Emitt Rhodes could sing...I don't honestly know if I can do that tune vocal justice, and I'm not 100% sure about that lyric, Todd, though what you said seems right, it's a little hard to be sure. Ever seen it in print? Got an ER song book?

I've really been enjoying his catalog, I wanna buy some when I can figure out HOW and WHAT, but he is an interesting musician. He definitely crafted his tunes, what an arranger!! And I'm psyched to delve into the work of another do-it-yerselfer...

Hugh,

Several of Emitt Rhodes early CDs can be found on Ebay, they are always there in small quantities. Also, go to this link for a rather poignant article about the Emitt Rhodes of today and how he got there. I was a huge fan of his stuff in the early '70's and his is not a unique story of how the industry chewed up and spit out great talents.

still regarding Emmit Rhodes.. He was a huge influence and a bit of a hero to me in my late teens/early twenty's. Someone stole his first album from my house. It took me 25 years of searching through used record bins before I found it again. It's still one of my favorite albums of all time.
