Hey Todd, I will have to check some of these out...

As this is a very subjective list, I won;t nit pick...much :) The Bangles are there, and you omitted Rubber Soul, The White Album, Pepper completley? say it aint so Bro :)~ "All over the Place" has a tune "going down to Liverpool" , Susanna Hoffs even plays a Rick 360 :)~ You trying to date one of them??? They will love you for putting them ahead of anything in the Beatles Catalog. ... I am just busting your Balls...I have the Album. :) I do think you should have included Rubber Soul...the inspiration to Pet Sounds.

Peace.

Great Lists!!

though I'm stunned that there's no Talking Heads..
and then...no Pink Floyd????

Animals? The Wall?......
Maybe they're too morbid for most people to choose as favorites, but I think I listened to my Pink Floyd records a lot..

"Remain In Light" by the Talking Heads would be in my top 10. And speaking in tongues would be up there too, actually all of the Talking Heads stuff.
And David Bowie...
Hemispheres buy Rush..
then the YES albums!
Close to the edge especially...
My favorite modern Jazz record was probably Dave Holland "Extensions". Steve Coleman BLACK SCIENCE is right up there too.
Train Of Thought by Dream Theater.
Stand Up / Jethro Tull.
One Trick Pony/Paul Simon..

I don't think I can make a list like this, my head gets so crowded and I cant really decide what order something like this would go in....I cant even decide what order to put my favorite steely dan records in... but I love almost everything posted here so far!

Wow - that's a real time-trip - so much fabulous music! And loads I've never even heard of.

Here's a few more...
Traffic - any of John Barleycorn, The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory, On the Road
Hendrix - Band of Gypsys
Cream - Live Cream
Blind Faith
And somewhere, anywhere, just one of the 27 Joni Mitchell albums...

Tod, your knowledge of pop music amazes me. And everyone else too.

"Northwest Passage" by Stan Rogers, Canada's best songwriter ever (although I think you may have to be Canadian to really "get it")

If you've never heard Stan, this could be one of the year's big discoveries for you. Check out this video with a testimony from a seaman about how the song saved his life during a shipwreck, and check out the intensity on Stan's face at the end of the performance. From the documentary "One Warm Line"

Oh, and any record by Stevie Ray Vaughan (didn't notice him above but may have missed it)
Shit! What about Strong Persuader by Robert Cray

and

Meazzanine by Massive Attack (that's a masterpiece)

like

Dummy by Portishead

The Residents - FREAKSHOW & MANY others like their COVER albums
Sublime
Tom Waits
Billie Holliday
Howlin' Wolf
Robert Johnson
The Sex Pistols
Operation Ivy (Pre- Rancid Tim's BEST stuff in my opinion)
The Fall
The Call
The Alarm
OutKast
Ludakris
Tupac
The Pixies
The Violent Femmes
Prince
Arrested Development
KMFDM
NO/FX
Propaghandi
Guided By Voices
Pavement
Sonic Youth
Nirvana
The Doors
The Misfits
Stone Temple Pilots
Rage Against the Machine
Morrisey (The Smiths)
ICP
Nelly
Adam Sandler
Missy Elliot
James Brown
Michael Jackson
The Clash
The Beastie Boys
FEAR
X
Black Flag
Beck
Authority Zero
Ministry
Jesus & the Mary Chain
Minor Threat
Al Green
Buddy Holly
Dick Dale
Mos' Def
The Ramones
Marilyn Manson
Otis Redding

oh my god! I could go ON & on.... It's addictive! Wow, so much GREAT music that has touched peoples lives is represented in this post - nice job....urrrr... Todd it kind of took on a life of its own.

SORRY about not mentioning the Album titles, I've been a person doing the SOLE-supporting of a VERY large family for the latter MUSIC portion of my life, and have MOSTLY survived off copied/borrowed & pirated music. For this reason, I'm not always sure WHICH album or CD the material that seemed AMAZING to me for some of these artists, is from.

AND - I PREFER compilation discs, 'cause it's USUALLY the Best of the BEST. Although DEFINITELY NO mistaking the beauty of the cd/album as it originally was cut OR the importance of CONCEPT or THEME albums like: The White Album, Abbey Road or The Wall, etc.

It's exciting to see that I share similiar musical interests with so many of y'all!

- go figure, eh? -pHLeGm

I always seem to arrive late for these parties, just in time to kill the thread, but here goes. Instead of throwing my own hat in I'm gonna comment on just a few of the other hats laying about.

Todd -
Eno - Another Green World. Consistently in my top 5 too. The perfect blend of his rock and ambient sides. Genius.
Beatles - Abbey Road. Also my favorite Beatles album
XTC - Drums & Wires. Tough to pick, but right now this is my favorite XTC. Most under-appreciated band of all time.
Harry Nilsson - Nilsson Schmilsson - The second album I bought. It holds a special place for me. There was something so lovable about that guy.
Nick Drake - Brighter Later. I only heard his music in the last couple of years. Powerful melancholy.
David Bowie - Hunky Dory. I'm surprised this Bowie album comes out on top of so many lists, over his other early albums that I think are better, but still deserving a top 100 spot.
Fleetwood Mac - Rumors. Imagine how great this one would be if you could erase all memory of hearing it daily for the last 30+ years.

Sapphire -
Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn. First time I heard it I was about 16, after already being completely awe-struck by DSOTM and WYWH. I checked it out of the library! I was shocked. But today, I go back to that one more often than any of their others.
Scorpions - Fly to the Rainbow. I loved this one way back in my metal days. Speedy's Coming was a brilliant cartoon metal song!

Father Time -
Bowie - Station to Station, Live. All of his '70's albums are on par with each other. Live was the one that got me hooked though.
Led Zep - Houses, Physical, IV. I can't say much that wouldn't just be obvious, but hese are my 3 faves too.
Steely Dan - Katy Lied. Hard to pick a Dan album. Everything before Aja.

Sam -
Michael Oldfield - Tubular Bells. How can an instrumental album made by one guy be so engaging every second of the way through?
Rick Wakman - Journey to the Center of the Earth. Great memories of this one! My favorite line: "DUMB with astonishment and amazement which bordered on stupefication, they left the forest..."
Moody Blues - Seventh Sojourn. As great as the rest of their '70's albums. The Moodys are a big influence.
Kraftwerk - Autobahn. What a weird departure from your mostly "woody" sounding music. I love it too.

Larree
Jeff Beck - Blow by Blow. Awesome
ELP - The first 4 albums were incredible
Genesis - Lamb, Selling England. Yum! (ok, I'm running out of steam here!)
Nektar - Journey to the Center of the Eye. (!) I thought I would be the only one in the world who might have a Nektar album in the top 100!

Fea in your Ear
Not a whole lot I can zero in on that I haven't already, but:
Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar Babies. I'd pick Killer first, but this one's up there too.

Never Never
Talking Heads - Remain in Light
Yes Close to the Edge
Jethro Tull - Stand Up Yay! a Tull album! This was my favorite Tull at one time but today it's Thick as a Brick

Ok, I'm starting to wander, but The Zappa mentions are up there, and Phlegm mentioned the Residents! Yes, Stegor and Bat Lenny are influenced by The Moody Blues and the Residents. Figure that out!

Duane,
I really wanted to put some Thin Lizzy in there, but I've only just really started getting to know them. There is no doubt, however, that in a year or so, one of their albums will make it into my upper eschelons. So, so great!

"Running Back" is - very simply - a perfect song!
