What kinds of indie music promo do you hate?

The worst is these voting contests where the person with the most friends wins.

Uninspired promotion with a a lot of boinking is also weak.

The local charts on reverb nation are stoopid.

I think all the ones that insult your intelligence are bad.

Oh couldn't agree more about the local charts on Reverb Nation. We've been told we rank oh so high on the charts for electronica music in Brockton MA hahahahaha - if you ever came here .... I bet there aren't even 2 other electronica musicians living here .. so lame

numberonemusic is the biggest shit site I have ever seen, They will sent you emails night and day that you are number one and one second later ask to sign up for a million things, Reverbnation is equally cruel, I will never be famous but will stay forever with IMP Music, and all the other sites can go to hell. Enough said

I hate all the self-promo these days. It sucks that we, as artists, have to be our own promo dept. reps in the 21st century. "Oh please, please listen to my music. Please!" I fucking hate it. Same thing is happening in the book world. "Please buy my book. Please give me a good review." It is all bullshit. True art is being destroyed.

I am writing short stories. I have written six stories over the last six weeks and started my seventh this morning. Nothing that I would share yet. I am following the Ray Bradbury method. A story a week for 52 weeks. No editing. No revision. Shooting for 1,000 words a day. When I finish I will go back and see if anything is worth developing. And then my answer just might be yes!

That is very cool.

I haven't heard of the Bradbury method as you stated, but no doubt there is one.

Many writers insist that they must write "X" words a day. And don't stop until they do.

I disagree, but who am I? :)

I agree it's a good exercise, though. It's damn sure better than PREPARING TO WRITE forever.

I've invested somewhat in writing VERY SHORT STORIES. It's almost like creating a song. You must be very concise in your ideas.

I applaud you, though, massively!

Thank you, Dan. And you are right. It is a lot like creating songs.

The 'Bradbury Method' is simply my name for Ray's advice to all beginning writers. Write (And read!) every day and after a year, you will have 52 stories (Maybe even one or two good ones!) and some skills.

And regarding word counts. The reason many writers do try to write a specific minimum number of words daily is because you need a good 100,000 words (give or take a few thousand.) for a book. So if you write 1,000 or more words a day you can write your first draft of a book in about 100 days.

That is cool Larree,
What kind of stories do you write?

I write Stephen King style horror I have one book called "fun house" where a group of college kids go into a daemon possessed fun house at a carnival and they are told that whatever they wish can come true its been done before think the Wishmaster series

In this story the thing they desire most is turned against them.
Like the athlete who wants to be a star the football field folds up underneath him and crushes him to death. The model finds out there is more to the industry than meets the eye and becomes a heroin addicted junkie that no one would want to look at and a used crack whore to become what she wants.

I have another story where the evil character posses the cunning of the 1880 character "Jack the ripper" it about his slow decent into madness and his perceived ability to control things he can't. Basically by the end he is a stark raving lunatic but his visions are so real and he believes them so much he can't tell them from reality. In this book instead of killing hookers he manipulates people to do his dirty work or at least he thinks he does. He thinks others are culpable because he can't face his own disgusting truth and acts. Who really does the things that are in his mind? That is for the reader to ponder.

Ken

Very cool Larree - I started blogging just recently - without sharing to any readers or anything - just to experiment with getting my thoughts out there and in order. I don't know anything about it other than that it feels great to do, just like writing music. Good luck with your stories!

Wow! Thank you for the support, Dolores, and Ken! The pipeline could soon become a writer hangout as well as a songwriter hangout!

So I laid down some rules for myself as I began this endeavor. And as I begin my seventh story, having finished six over the last six weeks, I have stuck to them. Rule #1 - I am not going to allow myself to be limited to any one genre. Every story I have written so far has been completely different. I have a horror story, an animal story, a sports story, etc. I don't want to lock myself into any one specific genre before I develop my writing chops. And rule #2 - I am going to stay as far away from critique, good or bad, for the whole year. This rule includes my own personal opinions and critique. This will prevent me from getting down on myself, as well as keep my head from exploding if I think anything I write is good. So I am not going to share any of my stories, or even my ideas for stories until the full year is up. Once I have my 52 stories I will go back and do some editing and revision if necessary, and start sharing them. Oh yeah. One more rule. Rule #3 - I MUST have fun doing it! And so far I am. :)

Larree I agree about staying away from self critique and even other critique for now.

Let the story flow and worry about editing or critique later its very easy to get bogged down. If I start editing in the middle of a song I often lose my mojo and can't finish it so I have to just let it ride then come back to it.

Writing is not as easy as it sounds it seems like it would be simple but its not. I also like your exploration and not limiting yourself to a specific genre. You may find you knack in an area that you never imaged you would.

Have fun exploring the world of writing. Personally I find it very taxing so I only ever wrote a few stories such as the ones I mentioned earlier.

Two Silo Complex,
Ken

I love blogging and writing - I've never written a story but I write regularly. I used to write by hand every morning first thing for 20 minutes - literally whatever came out of my head. A brilliant tool for creativity called Morning Pages in Julia Cameron's inspiring book called The Artist's Way amongst other amazing ideas.

Anyway - talking of writing makes me think I should start doing my Morning Pages again - who knows? Maybe a song will emerge!!!!

I love Ray Bradbury too - I remember reading his short stories when I was very young.

Hey, let me ride this bandwagon too. I'm writing a book too about all the greatest rock concerts I've seen and performances I've done throughout the years. It's basically the story of how I got hooked on music from an early age and never stopped!
Wow! an IMP writer's workshop! Kudos to my fellow writers!
