Does video obscure the music?

I've been working on a video for the next song and while the video itself is sort of captivating, I wonder if the overall effect of a visual in some ways takes away from the music?

no, visuals are important and adds a interesting aspect ,the thing is, who are you pitching it to. and which genre and age group ,how are you marketing it ,is it just for your own posterity and prosperity :) . '

There is a leaning back to listening to music more and more these days rather then relying on videos, people are into the listening at work with spotify, its huge, i watch those feeds on occasion with those who I know and track what songs they are playing. As for vids, some are big production and or simple laid back acoustic organic vibe, which people like more then the over produced glamor stuff, but of course depends on your budget and the message you are conveying, some vids I see by people make no sense at all and dont coincide with the message of the music and fall short of catching and keeping ones attention . I prefer watching live performances of course that aint possible at times when working on over the net projects, although some guys I know have made some pretty nifty videos all by them selves, Jaime Elliott has some outstanding ones , he is genius at it here is one or two where he does everything

good luck have fun

I am generally not a fan of most videos. But I do like live performance footage. That's different. As far as the cinematic, three-minute movie, born to be a filmmaker video goes, that I do not care for. I prefer to create my own visuals to music in my mind.

I do not think a video obscures the music,

unless it's shouting over it... literally...

I once saw a video of Elvis Costello's "Veronica",
great song, he wrote it with Paul McCartney...

only, in the video,
they have Elvis Costello miked, and he's kind of mumbly singing
along with the song, you know, the record,
and, I'm thinking 'what are you thinking you idiot?'

it's a mind movie, if you do it good,
you happen to have a talent for the things, me not so much,
my expertise is all in the music department,

but, well you heard that song,

might have been the first song on MTV,
was an early one anyway 'Video Killed The Radio Star',

I think they're nice things to have,

one possible mind movie to go with it,
but ultimately, the song has to be good, the record also has to be good,

so that, as Larree said, you make your own mind movie of it when you hear it.

Okay,

the video for Say Say Say,

by McCartney that he did with Michael Jackson,

that was just, awkwardly uncomfortably fucking weird...

like, the line
'take a look at my eyes these tears ain't dryin'

and they're both grinning like idiots...

I'm going 'what tears?'

Me, I cry so many tears when I get to it,
they call me Buddy Puddle.

That's some tears,

in answer to your question,

no, I don't think so.

Not really. The song's good or it isn't.

Yes, 'Video Killed The Radio Star' was the very first video on MTV. I remember it. We all got together to watch. My bandmates, a few of our friends, and me. I watched 'Video Killed The Radio Star'. And when it was over I said out loud, "Yes it did!" And I left the room.

I agree with Larry on this... live footage is just about the only videos I watch.
It's all become either too amateurish or same chit from one vid to the next... within genres they all borrow from each other like there are 4 ideas and you fit yourself into one of them... yawn. I'd rather just watch a band in the studio or faking a live performance than someone thinking they're really clever with backwards slo mo color fade sitting on a pickup truck with your torn blue jeans and hair blowing in the wind bs....
I'll take live over the the current nonsense called music videos!

If someone actually performs their song on the video, then it may interest me. Everything else has zero value for me or actually interferes.

Well Folks,

if "Video Killed The Radio Star"
I'd say it's about time that the Radio Star resurrected his or herself.

To me, it's still about, you made a great record, or you did not.

I have done videos of my performances over the years at various places with my little Zoom Q 3, basically for my own self and keeping a catalog.

Did all ten songs from my recordings of my first album at Blue Frog, and other times I played there doing covers and doing gigs with the bluevoodoo. So for me, it is just showing people, hey man I can play, and its got me jobs and piano jazz students. I have all my works linked up at my personal site and people do watch, not a lot, but enough to bring in a gig here and there and new students in the jazz end of things. so it pays to have LIVE performances

So yes live performances are everything, cause you are on your own, as a player doing solo work and doing up your chops playing your part in a band

Hi guys! I see that most everyone here is an awesome artist and I am just an enthralled fan. Nonetheless I think all of you like feedback from fans, so here is my 10 cents worth about videos. First of all, at age 66, I am a Boomer like some of you and did not grow up with videos much. I was an adult when VH1 and MTV came around and loved those stations when they actually played videos. Now of course, YouTube has taken over for the most part.

In my station "Groovy and 60's Style" I allude to and thereby recommend videos several times. For their debut 2012 album "When We're Together" the MonaLisa Twins made not only a video for all 11 tracks, but also a "behind-the-scenes" video for the making of each video! This was done at considerable time and expense and exclusively by them and their parents. Their father Rudolph Wagner aka Rudi had a professional recording studio in their home from before the twins were born and he is incredibly talented. Read the blurb I wrote about "The Wide, Wide Land" in my station. After I learned what the song was about, it took me several months before I could listen AND watch without my eyes tearing up. Now listen to "I Don't Know Birds That Well." Now add the video and see the unadulterated pure joy reflected by two teen twin girls and how that joy rubs off on you!

Here is a more sultry example: "Wild" by Tinatin is a smoking hot song, but I had no idea how sexy and sensual she is until seeing the video!

Read my blurb about "Fades of Echos" by Ben Elliot. My respect for what incredible talent he has went up ten-fold when I watched the video.

Finally, I went to the #1 eYe station here to see what he plays and this is largely where I learned I should go to Mr. Tosoff's actual artist's page. As you all know, he has many videos and I was first drawn to those. As I "play at piano" myself, it is a REAL TREAT to SEE and HEAR a world-class artist "tickle the ivories!"

When I "borrow" a song from another station as I have many from my friend "Itso's Earworms" I have learned something. I should write down the name of the song and artist and add directly from the artist's page. That is the best way to see if a song has won a Golden Kayak or ascended high in the charts. I want to put that in EVERY blurb, as that is a HUGE recommendation to others. For example, I need to go back to all of Richard Scotti's songs as many have reached #1 at various times. I will re-look at the blurbs of all 100 songs. Thanks for reading!

I must say, The Mona Lisa Twins,
have some of the best production, best videos...
And Dear Old Dad is the MOTOR is he?
Well, Dad knows what he's doing.

Also really loved,
"Not Far From The Fork In The Road" by Negative Tendencies...
..... a great song... a classic video...

lotta talent wandering around in this joint!

Hi Mr. Jane and Mr. Scotti!

Mr. Jane, what is a preferred short way I can address you? AJL, Lesley, Mr. Jane. or other? I am a rather slow typist and American Lesley Jane is a bit overwhelming for me. Richard and I are now on a first name basis.

So, when you gave me a SHOUT in my station, did I read it right that you thought that MLT were my daughters? That truly would be lovely and I would be extremely proud, but no such luck. It was about 4:00 am by that time and I was pretty rummy by then. This photo is actually a HUGE reward to me when I sent them a gift parcel via Please Mr. Postman last fall and they asked my permission to use the gifts in FanMailFriday. Now I need to ask their permission to continue to use this photo in my station in my IMP station before I launch it to the ends of the earth. Yes, their papa Rudi is the MOTOR and BRAINTRUST in the MLT project. Their step-mum Michaela is the HEART of the Wagner family and their general and booking manager. They are truly a lovely family! And yes, I will have to listen to NFFTFITR by NT soon and watch the video! I always follow up on recommendations! Is NT the name of your band?

Richard, thank you for the listing of your songs! I may need another station just for your works! Or maybe when company comes over I can just play your entire artist's station for them. I will go over all my blurbs with a fine-toothed comb, get the MLT permission for my photo (or another surprise one). Then I launch my station from California to North Carolina and down to Mexico, Panama, and Venezuela. I'll include the link to IMP and encourage my family and friends to come here, build stations, and invite all their music-loving family and friends to do so. Kinda like an old pyramid phone calling plan, but with beneficial results!

Well, must go mow now gents. Omaha will be very hot for the next 5 days and it's too risky for old, fat men to move around outside; yikes! Have a groovy day and keep the tunes coming!

Yes, Lesley is fine.

No, Negative Tendencies is not my band. I am not in that band, never was.
Negative Tendencies is a band, ongoing project thingy, which Scott,
also known as Father Time, is in.

I'm in the band BEATLESEX. I also as you see put out records
as American Lesley Jane (aka ALJ) and also, as Elvis Lesley,
(just put out an Elvis Lesley one, I think it came out well...)

You are a person with a sharp eye and attentive mind Sir,
almost reminding me of me late friend Pete Shotton...
I rather miss Pete..

I had suspected 'oh this is their Dad doing undercover promotion',
and not the case you say, Judos Kudos for even picking up the implication,
lesser minds never would have, so you have that going for you, mate.

Quite the musical family they are,
born they were, into a home already containing a recording studio?
Well so I guess they've had a bit of practice then.
And Dad really is one unfathomable dynamo... and Mum's the booking agent!
Great Heavens. Impressed is hardly the word at this point. Bit astonishing.
God really put the ducky wuckies in a row with that lot. Oh my.

Well, lovely chatting, be well,
God Bless, Much Love, ~Lesley

PS...

did I get that right?
Omama, South of Sussex?

You actually mean Nebraska then?
You're another one who's gotten to be British through osmosis is it?
Fascinating. Well yes, of course I am.
It happens. Be around this lot long enough... you know, the band. They'll do that.
They'll osmosify you right square as a two foot handshake. Did me anyway.

PS...

in the event you have any questions about the band, Sir,

you may email directly and inquire,
as I'd be the person to ask...

Why, BEATLESEX of course.
That band. Them. or rather, Us, I should say.

I get a lot of slag mail, rubbish the lot of it,
so just to make sure I know it's you,
if you ever were to write,
I ask you put "Hi Lesley, it's Mike" in the subject line,
it is Mike yes? I can be a tad forgetful. Not as much as I'd like but
I am working on it.
Best to give you the address though, before I do forget,
as I don't put it past me.

American_Lesley_Jane@yahoo.com

and yes, by all means, you may call me Lesley,
as it's me name, and calling me something else could become confusing.

Wow.

Seriously,
Anybody, who loves Rock N Roll,
and has not heard this song, and/or seen this video,
STOP what you are doing, this instant.
Go fetch yourself a cup of tea, coffee, whatever you please,
and watch this video. Preferably wearing a decent pair of headphones.
It is, just fantastically brilliant, the song, the record, the video. It is, pure Greatness.

'spose I should make that entirely clear,

"Not Far From The Fork In The Road" by Negative Tendencies...
the video I just posted up here, right above me latest Elvis Lesley number,

watch this video, hear this song, it is TOO good!
Not far not far not far from the fork in the road....
great song, great record (I imagined covering it, but no point, they nailed it)
and absolutely great video, nothing but brilliant. I am humbled.

Thanks for that. I just wanted to add that all 8 of our songs are good. We have a 9th song which is rather epic but looks like it's never going to be completed. will probably be released as FT song.

You just reminded me I want to reply, but right now old, fat man needs to take a nap on a really hot, muggy, windy uncomfortable day. I'll write myself a reminder on a sticky post-it no...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
