Guitar solos don't have to be fast to be really cool
I proved that today with some stuff I just recorded.

I agree.
And I think that I proved it with the 9-part harmonized guitar solo in
THIS SONG

Have you heard the 2 Negative Tendencies political songs we just released?
yeah I finished a demo of the song with the cool solo just now, sending to my bandmates.

Melody wins every time in my book. Not that I don't dig a cat with serious chops, but even a fast solo better be more than just really fast scales and fingerboard gymnastics.

Melody, yes.
But, IMO, the job of any solo—guitar or otherwise—is to bring the song to a new level. To bring it somewhere else.
Which is why THIS solo (not all that melodic OR flashy) is my favorite solo of all time.
(Not the first little slide bit, but the solo later in the song, kicking in a little bit after 2:45.)
Since it is such a part of the song, you really need to listen to the whole song to truly feel its power.
And then, when it drops out, it's just as powerful.
Incredible.
It simply brings the song to another, higher level... building upon the main riff, but intensifying it and spinning off of it to bring the listener to a place of higher consciousness.
At least, that's where it brings me.
All-time favorite.

Love Yo La Tengo - always have since they played Boston back in the early days. And even though I don't play guitar, it's really my favorite sound. I think that a meaningful guitar solo displays more chops than running all over the place with too many fast meaningless notes just for show.
