Either way, you might as well give up. Until some new folks start traipsing the pipeline, it's a pretty somber crowd I think. I know you and I go back to the days when artist forums were areas for outrageousness, performance art, sock puppets, etc. but most of these folks are older and they'll save their creativity for their songs, why waste it on having fun in a public arena?

Personally, I like itunes. It has generated some much needed revenues for me. But I do understand your angst with them. It is a hard rock to crack because the big mucks suck up all of the attention and most of the cash. But that is nothing new. I have been an indie for 5 decades and it has always been hard in the industry for us. But I am still here and I am not concerned about itunes. I am concerned about my tunes and how I can continue to be creative and productive now that i officially a fogey. Actually, this is the best time of my life. My goal was to do music full time and not be concerned about money. I'm not rich but I am where I wanted to be. More power to the big guys that made it bigger. I respect that! My focus is on my own ish...........

Just finished a new CD with MPG and it took 3 months to get a promised spot on iTunes. We had to go back and forth due to "glitches" in their system. Plus we weren't in the top 100 new release pages, you had to look us up by artist and album name only. No notoriety whatsoever. Indies are just Indies and have to take their place at the back of the line.
CD baby only took a week as well as Amazon. Bandcamp is OK also.
I'm shooting for selling my songs for usage in Movies, TV, Commercials, Games, etc. because it's not likely I'll have any retirement being a rockstar at 58.

what is the most traveled? itunes is easy, but does not have a community to speak of. Problem with non-mainstream generally lies in production quality.
If we were to overthrow any mainstream acts, we would need the product to compete and stand above.

more and more indies are taking home more and more Grammys every year, because we are believable and we give good goose-pimples when we have a great production. We are not obliged to adhere to industry/executive overreaching and involvement with the creative process which gives us a great edge. Unfortunately, we suffer the burden of most often times mixing and mastering our own shit.
get your goddamn sound geek buddies to be a part of this community as well as the creative songmakers, and you could overthrow the mainstream.

I'm not sure that's true. I know it literally pains me, the kind of crap played on top 40 radio these days. I think of my youth, when the music of the streets was Motown and a lot of really melodic stuff, and feel my kids have gotten a very short end of the stick.
There are a lot of folks around my age who feel this same way, but I don't see much real dissatisfaction from the public at large. In fact, you'll often hear the argument that music is in a better state now. ok you can store a trillion songs on your phone, and you can get most music for free if you know where to look, but I know the last time I was really excited about a new record coming out (other than my own!) involved Nirvana and that was around 20 years ago.

You don't have to read that, but it plainly shows how strong of a foothold indies have. 2013 was an even bigger year for indies. Major labels know this, and are trying to figure out ways to stay viable in an independent dominated landscape.
It couldn't be a better time to be an indie than now.
Bottom line, people want different, just not too different.
Quality is a must.

Overthrow the Mainstream Powers-that-be, in this digital post-millenium propaganda-powered age ?
C'mon Now !! We would need some BIG Players, from the overall music scene, that would have to be pretty Mainstream themselves, for this to happen. They'd have to start pushing THEIR thousands of fans,
towards OUR, and OTHER, Indie Music Outlets.
seems rather unlikely, but I'll never stop putting my original content out there.

not so much big players as big numbers of listeners. Overthrowing itunes in my mind would throw off the mainstream acts. But indies are slowly doing just that. We won't be marching with pitchforks and seeing immediate results, but with quality productions, indies' footlhold could morph into a pillar that mainstream acts would have to bear upon in order to stay credible.
all I'm saying is as crazy and ridiculous as it sounds at face value, the mainstream infrastructure has taken a massive hit from the internet and cheap audio recording methods/products. this is actually happening, it's just slow as fuck

I think you just need a mix of everything relevant - my CD tracks are on iTunes as I released the albums through CD baby and they do it for you - it's easy and very cheap on CDbaby - I've sold quite a lot of albums through them and only had a few downloads on iTunes but good to have them there and elsewhere. Personally I mostly enjoy the indie sites like this one where you can interact with other actual human beings but it's handy having your well - recorded tracks available out there too.

I have seen a lot of indie artists I work with do decently here.at itunes (mostly from cdbaby association) they are never in the top 100. but they get action. every bit helps. I am up there with my Holding to the Dream cd and Digital releases from Kick Back and been ok with sales and have had a few songs get taken for mechanical rights for use on various things , I have even seen things show up on my SOCAN royalties with Netflix which came from cdbaby along with radio play ,so it does pay to get your material up there and on itunes. I aint getting rich, but every quarter there is something coming through from my PRO. and it shows people are playing your songs. and liking them, or vice versa. So Register your songs once you release your cd or EP. and get them up at Nielsen BDS virtual encode for tracking purposes. That way you increase your ability to improve your royalties from your PRO like BMI SOCAN or ASCAP where ever
