You know what pisses me off about indies
I do a little bit of talent scouting for this site, send them links to anybody I think is good. Tonite I listened to 100 or so artists on another music site, and you just wouldn't believe how many had songs with slow buildups or sound effect intros. If you go 30 seconds without getting to the actual song, you're a lamo in my humble opinion. The times dictate that folks on the internet have short attention spans, what's with all the songs with long insubstantial intros, that's just stupid. Stop it already.

This happens in life generally don't you think.
- Going for a job interview you have seconds to make that first impression
- Viewing a prospective new home you decide if you want it before you get through the front door
- Writing a forum thread, an article, a book, you have to grab the readers in the first sentence
- Finding a partner you don't always get 'love at first sight' but you have to have 'interest at first speak' at least
Of course once you get someone hooked they'll have much more time, patience and consideration for you. As far as music goes, a dedicated fan will sit through the build up knowing that something good is about to blow their mind. Sadly, some long intros don't live up to their potential, or at least I don't think they do but I never hang around long enough to find out.

Personally I have no intention to be discovered, be successful with music or make a dime ever with my music or care about what people would ever say about my music, although I will appreciate everyone's input and every listener...that's what IMP is all about. God and my father have given me a gift and I will play until I die, even if I was the only person listening to my stuff,. That's what indie is all about...you don't play jodler music because it sells. The music industry is fucked up as the audience which finances the idiots who currently make big money. (Excluding people like Sam Smith,Adele and others....shit I just found a lot of good stuff...embarrassing, isn't it) Anyway fuck the intro ...Halleluljah...had to be said...another bad day....If Andrea Pirlo starts playing for NYCFC it will be a good day.... God bless everyone

Agree on that and sometimes I've had the opposite thing happen .... the tune starts with a fabulous hook and it draws you in only to lead to some stupid boring part for the rest of the song. I hate that too.

Blame the internet for shortening your attention span, not the indies for following their muse.
Listen to the whole song.
That said, I have a short attention span myself. But a great intro can really pull you in. The Stones had some amazing intros that led you into the song. Although, to your point, they were usually short and to the point.
Nonetheless, there is such a thing as a "radio edit" for a reason. If you are a "talent scout" you should know to keep listening for a bit, until the song kicks in full-on. Or you might miss something great.

I lose patience when a song repeats an intro phrase more than twice without adding something to it, I find myself saying "c'mon, c'mon I heard that already"

Good,, glad you lose patience Raaaaaaandy. maybe they had a hard childhood and are a little slow, or maybe they are still learning the art of songcrafting. It is a process, does not just happen. and anyways, who gives a flying crap what you think anyways, i dont, and never will. keep sourcing, maybe you may find one of a 1000 you like. and also, it just depends what one is looking for duder. perhaps someone out there digs what you dont. get it

A lot of times it has no relation to the song, it's just chicken scratch. It's like the artist is saying they can't write a decent intro, they're just going to do this lazy shit and hope it passes as art.

everybody grows in different ways. it takes time some work at it for years and maybe make some progress. and some will never amount to much of anything. I get what you are trying to present here. there are so many trying to come up for air and be noticed , we are all drowning in an ocean of artists ,or pretenders. contenders looking for their one second of fame. i do this for a living, not full time anymore,but understand how difficult it is, i listen as you do, i have thrown discs in the Garbage along with the bio, in the past, now it is sonic bids, reverbnation, soundcloud, dropbox wetransfer, my head is exploding, I am inundated gasping for air, Throw me a life preserver i am drowning . when the internet dies we will be so much better off. i rather be digging dirt and planting seeds and watching my garden grow..

Hi Raaandy, I get where you're coming from if it's your job but surely it depends on the length of the song!!!
If a song is 7 mins plus long then it's likely that the intro will be proportionally longer but a 2 min song with a minute drum beat as an intro is really just a demo, and believe me I have heard this. Doesn't bother me too much as I can go get coffee -

I agree that I have heard many songs that I thought could have been great if not for the poor or elongated intro. The intro should be a peak at what the song is about to deliver. I think some artists get enamored with slow build ups and lose sight of the fact that it should be faster and less predictable. But instead of listening and moving on I critique it and just lay it on the line with them. Most are open to critiques that are meant to make them better. I love to see growth in young artists it gives me hope that the songwriters of the future will keep this gift of love going. I teach a lot of teens vocals and songwriting. It is a rewarding experience. The things I focus in on are intro's and bridges. I believe that both are extremely important. The in between parts (Chorus & Verse) are usually very easy to write because the groove has been established. The feel of the changes should be smooth. So smooth that they feel like they belong together. Making the right creative decisions can be a hit and miss thing. At least it has been for me. You learn a lot from each situation and you grow from it. But it starts with someone being bluntly honest about the creative and technical decisions you make with your songs. Back in the 70's I was rejected by over 100 publishers and labels. I still have the box with the rejection letters. Two stacks are there. One stack were just flat out no's. The second stack are no's with critiques. I read them like they were the holy grail. I contacted those that allowed me to in order to get even more feedback. I established contacts while working on song crafting. But more important than that. I figured out what I was doing wrong and began to fix it. That led to me eventually being signed to several publishing deals and label signings. We must listen to the hard critiques the most as they are clues to our continued development. Respect the craft by learning to musically portray your emotions. People want to feel something from a song.

Ah like Amanda, yes I am absolutely fine. I was a bit mean spirited there with the Raandy , dont worry, I am very good, you will see some of my posts may be leaning to the jaded side or perhaps just defending those musicians who are learning their craft, it is easy to judge, one has to listen for the potential in what they hear, and I do that, but I wont promote artists who are in my opinion, not radio friendly in the music sense, but then again, we hear a lot of stuff that maybe radio likes, and is just bad, so again its personal likes and dislikes, we all have a spot for something others dont,

great thread. I love it when Raaaandy posts.
I like a long intro on some songs, but usually they are on the album, and not a single.
It's simple, if you want to grab someone's attention, cut to the chase, or suffer the fate of being passed over to fade into oblivion.
All of us think we are something special, or we wouldn't be releasing our music.
I love it when people say they are staying true to the art.

lol oh really! are we music whores,is that what you think, no way man how dare you Mr Noah Spaceship,have you no self respect, I mean. I cant get no money for my stuff, I have to give money to get anybody to listen to it, and even then I get all sorts of verbal abuse and crap thrown at me,its discouraging this pay to play thing. then I have a drink of scotch and everything is better again and i feel inspired. or is it something else? At lease I can listen to my own music and go, hey thats not too bad, I think there is hope after all
