How do you perceive your catalogue of songs, in your head?
Are they part of your identity or just something more detached? Are they the best part of you or just a function of the music you like to do?

There's a series of albums where the art is improving leading up to the album I'm working on now where I feel it's all coming to fruition.
They're skins I keep shedding on my way to the true animal.

Interesting, I had a friend like that who literally forgets about songs the day after they're released.
I'm the far other extreme, each and every song I add to my thing becomes a permanent part of my skin, it's an addition to my cachet as i see it.

I like this question, one of the best around here for some time .
No nothing felt here. I raise them, feed them, house them, then let the songs go like grown children, tell them to go find homes elsewhere. succeed or fail. dont think about it after. Now if asked about this song or that song, i might have an answer.

I tend to channel my energies and resources towards whatever songs I am working on in the present. I have many songs that I've written over the years and they exist in a number of various formats, some recent, some obsolete. Someday I'd like to go through them all and convert them to CD but not today!
In general I view my past and present songs with a respect for how much effort went into creating them and it gives me a certain sense of solace that in my time on earth I created things that never existed before and that I struggled and continue to struggle to do the best work I am capable of.
Each song that I create is like a piece of a puzzle that represents who I am as an artist and as a human being. Every time I add a new piece to the puzzle I get a tremendous sense of satisfaction that I took a another step towards completing the big picture which in the end is never really completed. It's all about the journey, not the destination.
I often have one of my songs running through my mind especially when things are difficult. They tend to block out the noise and the crap that I don't want to hear or think about. They're a source of strength and sustenance for me like storing away supplies for a coming storm. They carry me forward and will someday bring me home.

I try to write songs that everyone will enjoy even though "you can't please everyone".
They all have more than one meaning to me even though most will get a single message from them.
I try to group them into a theme for each CD to capture a mood or feeling. I have a few songs in my "in progress" file and when I write one that fits a theme, I put it there. (Systematic BS I guess.)
I have one group of tunes called "A Good Flocking".
Should be interesting.......Yes?

I don't think about it much because I am concentrating on creating new art. But I am aware of its presence.

my “2 cents” that is...
well here it goes then...
My feelings on this matter would be more in line with that of Father Time and Richard Scotti. And yes, my songs are part of my identity, being inseparable from me in fact. They’re an important part of everything I’m about and everything I have ever been about... and inescapably so. It matters not whether one of our songs “sounds like” rock&roll or blues or jazz or(even better) “un-like” anything else at all. In “our music” the message is the thing which matters most to me. The actual “music” part, while fun to do, most times seems to be a cloak-like “flavoring” for the message, very similar in its purpose as to what a rhyme would be. “Music” is the thing which “draws attention” and creates “focus”. It is a “tool” no more and no less than words and letters are tools... for conveying ideas. And whenever ideas are rooted in the spirit their conveyance becomes somewhat complex... imagine: “Silly” standing side-by-side with “Serious”... each of them of “Equal” value... at one and the same time... This is “unbelievable” as it stands there “nakedly” before you... Point + Counter-point = “Zero”... nothing... no thing at all. And yet, the truth of the matter is this... the longer “it” can stand there(or the longer you can coerce people into “standing” before it) will allow for “digestion” to take place... and it can and will be “received”... and “in the end” can and will have a transformative effect... resulting in, among other things... a turd! -M-
