Rolling Stone picks the 100 greatest songwriters of all time

Well, I dont place much credence in this kinda thing, really, it is such a personal thing and subjective. but looking at the list they maybe hit most of it ok. Some that dont belong, to me is Taylor Swift, lets wait awhile on that one alright
How about giving some more respect to Marvin Gaye and Kris Kristofferson and the Bee Gees,they should be placed higher IMO and what about some of the ladies in the jazz genre like Nina Simone, (aka Eunice Kathleen Waymon) she was prolific as a song writer ,one of the first real blues jazz r and b sisters that could lay down some great charts and sing so good, classically trained but segued her skills into learning her chops into the jazz blues end . A lot more come to mind, but again, there are going to be differences of opinion and people who would like to see others included, so like I said, I dont place much credence in this type of thing, its something we could come up with ourselves and maybe we all should make a project of doing so.

I agree, there was typical Rolling Stone pandering all over that list. and how could they not include Bell and Creed for cryin' out loud?

As soon as I saw this post, my first thought was the Beatles were going to be way up at the top of thos 100 greatest, doesnt surprise me, and not taking anything away from Lennon and McCartney but 2 and 3. really. sure they were monster songcrafters but perhaps they made the greatest influence on a whole generation as did the stones, so maybe that may have skewed the whole thing with the 60s and 70s song moguls churning out tunes galore. I should go through the list but have better things to do them mull over But did I miss something and was Queen left off this list, I mean Farrokh "Freddie" Bulsara aka Freddie Mercury and Brian May were pretty prolific, maybe I missed them as a scrolled through. maybe they are mentioned and i didnt see it , maybe they meant individuals, but then the Stones songwriting duo was there? cheers and more to come on this one for sure

And two more that really should be on there:
• Stephen Merritt (Magnetic Fields)
• Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices)
Both are insanely prolific and equally gifted. Incredible songwriters.

how about Bryan Adams, he was no light weight. and no one from Queen is on there either, that is pathetic, Taylor Swift makes the cut, come on now.....geez she is barely out of diapers and dont hold a candle to many of the other 99. how could you miss Adams. Even Paul McCartney loved Adams music and said so. this list blows , oh did anyone see Neil Young at all? did I miss him, or was he left out too, drop swift and insert Bryan Adams or Neil young. Alanis Morissette, Avril Lavigne. like ya, they are Canucks, but show some love there Gordon Lightfoot was pretty darn good, but not enough influence in the culture outside of Canada I guess so that is understandable. I know a lot of us will pipe up here and come up with our own list and make a real list of the top songwriters of all time. Rush could be a possibility. they are still rocking it out. ...I mean what are the criteria here and who was involved with the selection process. anyways, it is nothing to be getting ones nose out of joint, it is the once rebel magazine Rolling Stone gone soft in the head

All "best lists" are subjective and meaningless. Let's get real ~ Rolling Stone Magazine is a sell-out rag that should have closed up shop years ago. They used to be the bible of rock. Now they are the "Teen Beat" of Tweendom. Their so called "journalism" has been widely discredited and their music articles are nothing but fluff and pander. I was thrilled when Sinead O'Connor called them out for putting a reality tv star on the cover. Then they list Taylor Swift as one of the greatest 100 songwriters of all time? Give me a break!!! Rolling Stone Magazine is a pandering, fawning, disgrace that worships at the alter of mediocrity and popularity ~ the People Magazine of rock. Rock deserves better.

I'm afraid I don't know a lot of these people but I guess songwriters who don't perform are by nature less well known. However I think a singer who writes for themselves stands more chance of doing well. I love to hear people like Carole King sing songs that she wrote but didn't perform at the time, she seems to put more feeling into the songs somehow.
