Music does sad better than it does happy

Happy songs are often monotonous and irritating dance songs, while sad songs are filled with depth and meaning like If You Could Read My Mind and Baby Blue.

Just because they have more meaning and depth doesn't mean they are better. The quality of a song should be judged by a larger parameter than that. The effect it has on the listener should be a good indicator. I would think that a song that makes one happy is a much more valuable song than a song that makes one sad. Who wants to be sad? People that are already dealing with issues usually. Instead of giving them something that will make them sadder, why not give them something that will make them smile, shake some booty and party a little bit. Life should not be all sadness and woe. It should also be uplifting and joyous. IMO being joyous and uplifted is so much more valuable than being saddened and depressed. I would also submit that one persons monotonous and irritating perception may be another persons "best time of their life" song. The world already has enough sad shit happening. Why ad to it with song? I prefer the glass to be full and I love to dance to happy dance music. Its fun. What the hell is wrong with fun? If more people had it, there would be a lot less sad shit to write about.

A song can have a unique repetitive groove that becomes an enjoyable mantra, it needn't be happy or sad.

A song can be monotonous by repeating enough to irritate, you can't be happy if you're irritated.

A Dance song can be something you hear rather than listen to, it's the dancing and the social connection that makes you feel happy.

If you're sad, a happy song may irritate you but a sad song may make you feel happy that you have an outlet for your sadness to wallow in.

If you're happy, a sad song won't make you sad because you don't relate to the sentiments, instead you might focus on particular elements that you appreciate but remain emotionally neutral

Instrumental songs are great for the neutral, they decide if they feel happy or sad and don't have to be influenced by the lyrics.

Remember that song you learned as a child "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands" I don't think it inspires happiness in a 5 year old forced to join in :)
In a similar way the modernized version by Pharrell Williams "Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof" Doh! doesn't make me feel happy, just incredulous that someone can write lyrics like that ha-ha!

A "happy song" is a song - might be good or bad.
I do agree that "sad" songs are often mined from an emotional depth that leads to some inspired writing.
