Disappointed, let down, pissed off
A few months ago a professional musician showed some interest and talked about big production wotk amd promotion, then went silent. He had personal issues and I respected it. Then he started on facebook with loads of trivia so I tried to reach out, but was ignored. Eventually I very midly pointed out that it wasn’t nice to promise lots
and then back off. He didn’t like that at all. Why do people feel the need to make promises then treat you like you don’t exist?

Thats a tough one Francesca. I know it is not easy in the music scene, although if someone says something and gives some sense of interest in what you do and it does not materialize it certainly is a kick to ones hopes. The thing is this, for me, and many here will attest to it, count it up to a learning experience and try if you can to move forward and develop a fresh start, easy to say, I know someone who invested a whole lot of money in their project and was extremely disappointed when it did not produce the results they wanted. Now I had a hand in promotions and it did reasonable, ok, not bad, but when one sets their sights on high expectations and it dont happen, especially when there has been success for them in the past, well yeah, pissed offness and disappointment and let down occurs.
Anyways,its easy for someone to say this, the thing is keep moving forward, but when one is experiencing what you have with this person, whom I am aware of, and get lead on a wild goose chase so to speak, well , all talk, all bluster,
Sorry for you feeling this way, and having to vent, find a way to tap into your creative self, you have some fine lyrical and musical abilities, keep building and developing them. i am certain something will happen for you, and the thing is trying to get through the frustration and disappointments.
I know having worked in the industry, in a small way, done what i can for people, The fact is , that it is getting really challenging in, finding people you can trust and what you went through is a tough one but developing a relationship with people and getting to know them is another, a working relationship in music is one heck of an undertaking I have seen a lot of start ups and shutdowns and huge painful breakups. You have to just find away to work around this unfortunate and disappointing situation.
I hope you can work something out, cause you have the stuff , but it is hard picking up the pieces and moving on.

Oh boy, I wish I had even a 10th of the shit I have been promised by people in this industry. Every label i ever worked with has lied to get me to sign and every manager I have had claimed he had big music industry connections that he clearly didn't have. It's just rampant in the music industry. People say they want to work with you and then they flake on you before they have finished the sentence. After over 6 decades of that crap I have learned to just ignore it because it sounds too good to be true. The reality of the industry is that there are people out there that prey on the talent. They feast on the talented like they are carcasses in the middle of the road. It's all about money and they know that the only way to attract talent just to promise them the world while delivering nothing. You have to be thick skinned and even forgiving in the music industry because today's nobody may be tomorrows "it" person. So, I try to ignore the liars for now so that I will stay in good standing with them. I do this just in case some day they can actually deliver on their BS. But, don't let it get you down and certainly don't you take it personally. Quite often people fully intend on delivering on their BS but other things get in the way and they don't seem to know how to communicate that.

This sort of thing is sickening but it's also human nature. There's a lot of people out there who like to please others by saying yes when they have no intention of following through.

Dealt with two labels in the States, one in Texas ( kinda Phony) and the other was some place in the southern states, cant remember which one, but they were way crazy blowhards BSers totally
ok, yeah, the first was one guy was all excited about a group I had been promoting and I sent a cd to him and he was over the moon, he sent off a contract that would have stripped the guys clean and end up with nothing... all bluster and BS on the phone, gonna do this that ,whatever. being new in the biz way back, I was like ,hey wow, then pfff, deflation. yeah, hosers man hoser heads
Labels. read read read, the contract, get a lawyer in the industry, an entertainment lawyer once you secure any kind of opportunity. secure one if you can, its the best investment you can make. they will help protect your intellectual property rights and most of all protect you! If it looks like you have something happening, investigate, throw yourself into reading up on the subject, cause there are a lot of slippery sharks in the waters.......
I know of a fellow who got screwed over bigtime, I promoted him quite a while ago, Bobby Parker.Bobby is here at IMPwow did Bobby ever get totally screwed over, got ripped off back in the 60s ,literally got robbed had long conversations prior to doing promo for him. unfortunate but people in this movie music biz are predators and they feast on the naive ones, starry eyed ones, the all brand new ones. its a shame.
but then again, I promoted his cousin ,no names please and got stiffed for half of what I should have got,never got the balanced owed, so musicians are and can be losers users and rip off artists as well as slimebags. that is why I take monies up front, everything, the whole ten yards, and people know that now, and I basically only promote people who I have had a previous working relationship with.
. Better to be your own label, labels in this day and age is a pipedream, like Stoneman said, but if you start to get some traction, say in college, your songs are getting spins, you are getting some royalties, and perhaps you luck out as an indie and kick out a great song and start getting head hunted, do your self a huge favor, hook up with an entertainment Lawyer. its a complicated business out there. cover your ass (sets) lol
and yes, Stoneman has it right, slimy sharks and users and abusers swimming in this music industry. big promises, find the right people, learn the biz, read study learn. immerse yourself in this biz, thats what I did when I first started, it was exciting, revealing interesting, wade through all the BS and crap, learn to read people. cause you know, BS BAFFLES BRAINS they say......

Yep, had a horrible experience a while back with a "development" deal that turned out to be completely worthless and insulting as well .... the hell with it - you're a really good singer - you'll look back and laugh.

Hard knocks n'all, and on top of that blind from an early age.

Sorry to hear about that, Francesca. We all have our music business horror stories to tell. It's an occupational hazard to be sure. The best way to deal with it is to stay the good person you are and not be hardened or jaded by these negative experiences.
In my circle of business contacts I'm known as someone who never breaks a promise or does things that are hurtful or unethical to people I work with. I go to great lengths to be this way precisely because of the anguish that so many assholes put me through in my musical journey. I never want to be like them and I want to show my younger colleagues that there are still some good guys left in the music business. But as in all businesses there are good and bad people. As you evolve in this field you'll learn who to avoid and who to gravitate towards.
Don't become cynical or bitter. It will have a negative impact on you artistically. Hold on to your idealism. It's one of your many strengths.

Pick your best song according to feedback .join the musicians union £19.60 a year . find a drummer, guitarist , bass player with pro session experience. get the price to hire them for 2 days in studio .find a producer get their price.find a studio with good outboard gear and pro end mics and get price for 2 days. if the total price seems beyond your finances don't worry approach a businessman let them know it's your dream and leave them some songs on cd , if you knock enough doors someone will help trust me I was like you many moons ago! a young man with a guitar, songs and a dream and i did this . After a couple of weeks I found someone who got back to me .Long story short he paid for studio time and bought us a PA, Drums,amps,and mics he was amazing and spend around 18k on us.we went on to get a record deal and do little bits of radio and tv .We never made the big time but came close and had some great times along the way.Forget this guy no-one can stop you from succeeding only you can do that so keep on keeping on and believe because from what i'm listening to your are very gifted .once you get that track complete approach collages and find a someone doing video production and ask if they'd like to make a video for the song again you will find someone, post the video on social media with a short intro at beginning explaining your journey and ask them to share if they like and watch if grow and grow.good luck and stay positive

People need to keep promises follow through and do what they say .words mean nothing without action. Too bad it did sound very exciting. Things will work out Francesca ..keep your perspective in balance and your aspirations will someday become real .keep plugging away . Things will work out

At least it was just words and you haven't been ripped off monetarily - that would make it sting even more. The advice here has been sound and I feel likewise - what doesn't kill you makes you stronger! Don't be discouraged. I've recently watched a documentary about Emitt Rhodes - a talented musician who created a lot of his music all by himself, who was so eager to get a record deal he agreed to a near impossible task that he fell short of achieving - to produce 3 finished albums in one year. Poor guy was burnt so badly he ended up pretty much leaving the biz - only to resurface briefly before passing away just a couple of years ago. This guy was being called "the one man Beatles" and was often compared to Paul McCartney and Harry Nilsson. Look him up, he was a real talent - and his story is also a very cautionary tale. Be careful out there!
