The New Band
Just wanted to say I played bass with some pretty stylin cats tonight and had a freakin blast . 2 doods with strats and a good drummer. Everybody can sing and harmonize. We did this funky version of come together that was the shit. It was like we all knew just what the other people were gonna do before they did it. I have been playing and recording for so long by myself I forgot how very cool it is. Well everyone liked me and Im gonna be in a real live rock and roll band and play out and do gigs and junk. We were throwing around some names for the band.
Out of the Blue
Company man
Spank Momma. Which one you like, Peace Now.

That's great to hear, John. I know exactly what you mean. I've done a lot of recording by myself and it's a great creative outlet. But nothing comes close to the thrill of playing with your mates, when the gears are meshing and there's some kind of psychic connection between you. Even if there's no audience - I don't think most people get it anyway, especially when you're improvising. We often videotape ourselves so we can be our own audience, 'cause we get it.

As for the name, geez I dunno. Names are so powerful. I get an immediate impression from names. Here's what I imagine from these:

Out of the Blue: Title of one of my favorite Roxy Music songs. Classy, flashy, cheerful, polished
Company Man: Reminds me of Working Man by Rush. Blue collar, rugged, loyal, masculine
Spank Momma: Reminds me of the greatest band to come out of Minnesota - The Suburbs. They had a song called Momma ("Mommy, I'm shaking. Slap me!") Irreverant, rebellious, punk, snotty

It doesn't matter how much recording I do. Every so often I have to go out and gig! There's nothing like a good crowd that gets into the tunes. I have a party thingy we're doing on the 9th. None of us have anything down 100% but being around the block a few times makes it easy to whip out some favs.
I'm glad for you John. The bonus is when the guys want to do YOUR tunes!!
Names drop out of the sky, dude. Something will happen soon that sounds good.
Good luck and Rock ON!!! D.

Yeah, I like spank momma too. Its kinda of a reminder how things evolve. First they say a good spankin can help the kids, then they say YOU CANT HIT YOUR KIDS, soon it will be the kids hitting the mom and she wont be able to do anything but daddy when he comes home. Or is it daddy that is spankin momma. SSSSSwack, you were bad! Swack swack. very bad. Butt In a good way. Peace.

It's good you've found the right mix so quickly. We're trying out a female singer at practice today. I play bass mostly now for three reasons. First, it's the basics of all the tunes. It insures the songs direction, timing, ect. If your playing live, everyone refers back to the bass player if they get off track (even the drummer). Second, it's a little easier to concentrate on the vocals and easier to improvise to make your gig a "show". I'm 50 and I still act like I'm 25 onstage. Third, I love it just as much as guitar! I can still get my ya-ya's out with a killer bass line (plus it's a lot harder to find bass players).
Our drummer plays killer violin! I'm trying to get the guys to do an acoustic set.
Point is, make the most of what talent you've got..........the rewards are awesome!
Spank Momma is cool. Chow, D.
