I have a 77 Fender Jazz Bass
Hi gang

I want to sell my 77 Fender Jazz Bass. I never play it anymore so I'd like it to go to someone who can.

I have no idea what it's worth. Would any of you happen to know a good place to find the value and a good place for me to sell it?

I also have an Ampeg SVT 200T head I'll throw into the deal.

I have no idea what the shipping would be on the head though cause it's pretty heavy!
So ideally it would be better if I sold this combo in Rhode Island,

I don't know what either one is worth so could use some help on this if anyone happens to know.

Thanks

Steve

Based at what I looked at on Ebay just now, you can sell for $750 to $1500+ depending on condition, accessories such as case/gig bag,
and the manufacturing origin (I think American made are worth more than
Japan made, but the Made in Mexico ones are significantly lower valued).
I suggest you take it to have it appraised before you sell so that you get
a fair sell price.

Thanks Jay

It's in pretty good condition and was made in the USA.

The only real music store around here is Guitar Center and I don't think they give appraisals.

I'm wondering what the head would be worth too? I can tell you when I played out with that head it was a monster! I played it through a Sun Folded Bottom with two JBL 18 inch speakers in it.

I gave a lot of equipment away including the bottom and a set of lights but I'm not giving these away. I need the money to buy some updated equipment..

Your best bet is by taking it to a reputable pawn shop, or contact Fender guitar website and look up the serial number to get an estimated value.
I saw this at Reverb.com

Thanks Jay

I don't think there is such a thing as a reputable pawn shop, not in Rhode Island anyhow. I know an owner of two pawn shops here and they are all about making as much of a profit as they can and don't do appraisals.

They will for jewelry but even then you'll get not a great price so they can offer to buy it off you.

Thanks for the ideas anyhow. I may check Fender but I think the last time I tried that I couldn't even find my Bass there.

The link you posted? Mine is actually the Olympic White listed at 1700.00 to 2700.00. That's a pretty big gap but gives me some kind of an idea.

If there is anyone else reading this that has any other suggestions, I would appreciate it.

Steve,
I think that there is a fender site that you can look up the serial number for a value but I don't have it off hand.

There is a Fender site, but their serial number look-up is to see what year it was made. Steve already knows it's a 1977 model.
The Fender site doesn't give value. That's what the site in previous comment above provides.

77 Fender is worth a lot the Ampeg head is all valve worth a lot too. I would split them. As a package i would take the middle ground. Punks not dead

Thanks guys for all your comments.

I'm still not sure how the hell I'm going to sell this stuff. That head? It's too heavy for me to even lift alone any more. :)

I can tell you the Bass sounds wicked!

What to do now?

Thanks Jayson,

Sorry about the mix up I thought there was a site that showed the year and the value but maybe its only the year.

Steve.
I agree that it would be easier to sell split up since it sounds like they are pricey.
or if you have local music shop you could try trade-in but they give you chump change for it.

Ken

Thank you

Yep, I'm going to have to figure this out. I had no idea the head was worth that much money and the Bass even more!

I won't do the music store thing cause yes they will take advantage of me.

I was going to try Craig's List but I don't really want to give people my address.

I think that if you could find someone who is looking for things similar to what you
have to sell, you might do better than simply heading for a pawn shop or a music shop, both of which has a priority of making a profit over giving you a fair deal.

Basically the rule of thumb with trying to sell stuff is,
they'll take you for whatever they can have you for.

If you look at all desperate they'll have a field day.

If you did find a collector, odds are, you are still faced with
having someone come to your home to view it, unless you
were dragging it to them, which makes you appear desperate
in a way, so it's better maybe them coming to you,
from the psychological advantage standpoint.

If you walk into a store, pawnshop, what-have-you,
your best bet is first be dressed well,
but appear comfortable, like you always dress like this.
Then, say simply that you 'wanted to get an idea of what the thing's worth'...
... that in fact you are NOT looking to sell it.

If you play the angle just right,
you may get them salivating, and they make an offer.
Which you can smile and politely thank them for,
while gently refusing, repeating you just wanted an idea what it is worth.

Speak in full sentences. Say do not instead of don't,
say will not instead of won't.

Appear Eclectic and Financially Wanting For Nothing,

and that, is more a projected attitude,
than it is a thing in your wardrobe.

Lots of rich people dress like crap.

It's a Mind Game.

You need to know that going in.

Worst Damn Thing You Can Do,
is look for fairness.

Then they KNOW they got you.

If you say
"I just wanna find a decent deal"

that translates to "I need cash, please don't rob me".

You will get schtupped,
and at that point, they don't even lube ya.

Now,

to those who think I deliberately court controversy,

no, I don't.

I simply tried to 'tell it like it is'.

They're not there, to be your friend.
They're not there, to give you a fair deal.
They're there, to absolutely screw you as thoroughly as they possibly can.

You need to know that going in.

So far, no one has said that,
so this day I decided it was time for me to open up my big fat famous mouth.

Any questions, you still have my email address,

write and ask.

No, sorry, I'm not in the market for those items,

or I'd have written to you and offered you something for it.

The Bass sounds nice.
The amp head sounds powerful,

but we quit touring in 1966.

heh.

PS....

I totally do not blame you being cautious
where craigslist is concerned.

Dubious place with dubious results....

I suspect Craig is a Swillball. Well look at the riff raff he attracts.
I can blame Craig, and his stupid little list.

I'd like to say "I've met some wonderful people through craigslist"...

I'd be lying though.
One may return, try again,

"is there not one sane woman my age for the love of God"?

No. There aren't. I know now.

I had a good life. 26 years of marriage to someone who won't be topped.

I'm telling you,

if you're gonna go for selling it, bringing it in to a place,

really get good at looking like you don't give a shit.

Like walk out when they start low balling you. Just walk out.
Politely. With a smile, thanking them for their time.
Even throw in a wink that says
"I'm off to emblazon my magic upon someone else's world, buh-bye now..."

Remember, to be polite, is to reserve the right to be impolite.

Thanks :)

I won't bring it to any pawn shops or music stores around here because I already know their deal and it's not good.

I think I'll look for a Fender collectors website and see if I have any luck there.

best way is buy it now or best offer on ebay to maximize ur buyers. See what people will offer use the higher end of the price range. Put in the exact details of what you got on ebay and on the left hand column further down there is sold items. Will give u a rough estimate what to ask. Or to sell on thru other ways
