Glad to hear your children are all OK in CC Rob. The city has taken a tragic pummelling as if the last quake 5 months ago wasn't bad enough. I have not been able to contact our family friends in CC. Just praying and hoping they are OK.

news today

Police are having to leave bodies on Christchurch streets to focus on rescuing survivors of yesterday's 6.3 devastating earthquake.

Some of those rescued had to have limbs amputated to get them out, Superintendant Russell Gibson said this morning.

Up to 30 people have been pulled alive from collapsed Christchurch buildings as rescuers worked throughout the night under floodlights.

While 65 have been confirmed dead it is certain the death toll will mount today as more bodies are found.

Hundreds of rescue workers had been working through the night systematically going door to door checking for survivors, Mr Gibson said.

The PGG building on Cambridge Terrace and the CTV building on the corner of Madras and Cashel Streets were the worst hit following yesterday's 6.3 magnitude quake, and "significant" numbers of people were trapped inside.

There were 38 bodies in a temporary mortuary at Canterbury police station, Mr Gibson said.

"I know that the figure of 65 [dead] has been mentioned, I know that it will be significantly higher than that.

"There are bodies littering the streets they're trapped in cars, crushed under rubble, and where they are clearly deceased our focus unfortunately at this time has turned to the living," he told Radio New Zealand.

Thinking of you all in Christchurch and those that have loved ones there - so glad you are OK but I know from experience from the tsunami (my son was there - thankfully unharmed) how much the death toll even of those you don't know weighs so heavy and you feel their pain as if it were your own.

Sending love and healing thoughts and energy your way.

Rescuers this morning drew a blank after reports of signs of life at the Holy Cross Chapel in Christchurch's CBD.

Urban Search and Rescue chief of operation Jim Stuart-Black said earlier a "live person" search was under way after reports of a survivor buried beneath the rubble of the chapel.

He refused to give out the location but it was believed to be at the chapel.

However, a Fire Service spokeswoman told NZPA they had investigated these reports with dogs and found no nothing. The service also ruled out someone else buried under rubble in Gloucester Street.

No one has been rescued from the ruined city since 3pm yesterday.

Searchers are still looking for survivors trapped in pockets of the devastated Canterbury TV and Pyne Gould Corporation buildings.

So far, 60 percent of the central city had been cleared by Urban Search and Rescue, Mr Stuart-Black said.

"The remaining 40 percent, we have got some difficult areas to clear."

The confirmed city-wide toll from Tuesday's lunchtime 6.3-magnitude quake was lowered overnight from 75, to 71 but with hundreds still missing, police expect that figure to climb dramatically.

No survivors have been found since yesterday afternoon.

"We are still looking for survivors," Superintendent Russell Gibson said this morning after reports that rescuers were now looking for bodies rather than survivors.

"Experts tell me there are pockets within a number of these buildings and provided people haven't been crushed there is no reason to expect that we will not continue to get survivors out of there," he said

Yesterday the CTV building was declared "unsurvivable", with between 50 and 100 people still trapped inside.

Rescue work at the site was halted by safety concerns as the nearby Hotel Grand Chancellor threatened to collapse.

Ninety students and staff from King's Education Ltd, housed in the devastated Canterbury TV building, are either missing or unaccounted for.

Of those 58 were "new Monday starters", nine were staff -- King's Education managing director Brian Taylor among them -- 10 were from the Toyama Study Group from Japan, while 13 were "other students" according to the institution's website.

The school specialises in teaching English to international students.

Fifteen CTV staff and four Filipino nurses are also believed to be among those inside.

Mr Gibson said no survivors had made it out the CTV building since 3pm yesterday but he still had hope.

"It doesn't look good but we are always hopeful, we will continue to pull that building apart piece by piece until we are satisfied," he said.

Hey Rob.

I've been offline for a couple of years but finally bit the bullet and renewed a satellite account (costly and half-assed) that I used back in Ontario.

Just began checking out "old friends" last night.

I don't follow the news so I am quite shocked to hear about the EQ in Christchurch.

So glad your family is safe. It's hard to imagine the shock and anguish so many are going thru there.

Let's chat later.

Hi Tim and Terry (welcome back )

my daughter wrote this account of the quake 3 parts

Tuesday 22nd February 2011
It starts off like any other day. My flatmates head off to work, and my head is consumed with the presentation I have to make in a morning meeting. Workmates are casually greeted, and finishing touches are added to powerpoint slides. Nerves are laughed off with a colleague. The meeting begins, and important business is discussed. My friend shows me a note she has jotted on her piece of paper “I need to go to the bathroom” and I giggle quietly. Time rolls on and we present to our captive audience. Much discussion is had. An hour overtime and the meeting finishes. I rush out the door, ten minutes late to meet my dance students who are arriving to do a demonstration at CPIT’s Clubs and Societies day. I’m busting to go to the toilet, and starving, but I rush to get our gear together and get the dancing started. My students are great, they get performing straight away, giving away vouchers for free classes, and talking to people. I feel extremely proud of their dancing, and the huge smiles on their faces as they share their passion. Other entertainers join us. Students from the Circo Arts Programme juggle and clown around, one on stilts. Volunteers from the student union cook pancakes and free iceblocks are handed out to the gathering crowd. The atmosphere is festive, and people laze around watching and chatting amongst themselves.
12:51pm hits. It is unreal. I am there, but at the same time I am watching from a distance. My first instinct is to look up. I don’t take my eyes off the six-storey building that looms over us, swaying and rocking violently. The ground has come alive. Like a ship caught in a storm, the concrete beneath our feet shudders and swerves. People are screaming and falling over, and someone shouts out for people to ‘GET DOWN LOW’. I duck down, my eyes still fixed on the building above us.
Finally, the shaking subsides. One of the performers calls out to her friend. She has survived the whole ordeal, standing upright on stilts. A round of applause breaks out from the crowd, but I can see her face is pale and frightened. Action breaks out around us, everyone is moving away from the buildings. My dance students and I grab our equipment and speed toward an open area. Nobody knows where to go. Where is safe? An aftershock grates at our nerves and I survey the faces of the people around us. Friends embrace each other. Tears stream down faces. Everybody is together, but dealing with their own torments. There is an immediate need to stick together. Jokes break the tension – a friend reminds us all that he loves us – it is said with jest, but there is an ounce of nervous truth behind it. Loved ones are contacted, we’re ok. I don’t know who to text, I know hundreds of people in Christchurch – family, friends, workmates. I am interviewed by the student radio station, the journalist’s reaction to a crises is strong in this guy. We can see clouds of dust over the city, and it is only minutes before we hear news that the Cathedral has fallen. We have a radio with us for our dance demonstration, and we scroll through the stations urgently, trying to get more information. All the local stations are playing music, DJ’s evacuated. Eventually we pick up some news, a big Earthquake has hit Christchurch, it was centred near Lyttleton Port, but only 5km deep. There have been casualties. A crowd gathers around our radio. Forlorn faces listen closely to the bad news. Still we don’t know where to go. One of my students is frantic. His mother works in the central city-the area worst affected-and can’t get out of her building. He wants to go to her. He’s left his sister at High School. He’s desperate to be with his family. I’m desperate to make sure he gets out of the city safely. I can see the anguish in his face as he agrees to come with us. I know his mother
would not want him running through the city. I know I’m doing the right thing. I pray that a happy reunion will follow.

part 2

Finally, we decide to make a move, we head to my car. It is safe, but traffic is at a standstill. Again we are at a loss for what to do. My wallet is in my office, on the first floor, and I know it’s stupid to go in, but I also know that over the coming weeks I will need money. I run into a colleague who gives me a brotherly rub on the head. They’ve been worried. They didn’t know where I was. He comes into the office with me. We race up the stairs, and are greeted with chaos. Everything is on the floor. I spot my handbag in the corner of the room. Tampons have scattered everywhere, and for a moment I flush with embarrassment. I clamber quickly over pot plants, furniture and folders, slipping and sliding and grab my bag, quickly scooping contents into it. Then we bolt down the stairs, eager to be out in the open again.
We leave all heavy objects locked in my car, and decide to walk to one of my students homes. I’m still busting to go to the toilet, but there is nowhere safe to go.
Walking down Moorhouse Avenue the evidence is everywhere. Buildings are beaten and broken. Mud and water floods the streets. Traffic is backed up for miles, hardly moving. There are people everywhere, walking. Some of the time we walk in the middle of the road, avoiding buildings teetering on their foundations, and glass scattered across the ground. People are quiet, but you can see deep thoughts swimming in their eyes. One street is completely flooded, and we have to climb over fences into residents’ front yards to keep moving. We walk for a long time, huddled in blankets of disbelief.
Eventually our destination is reached. Walking up the driveway another big aftershock reminds us that the earth is still in control. We head straight for the back lawn, a large open space, and group together on the grass. A reconnaissance mission is deployed into the house, the bathroom is used, and the cupboards are raided for food. Broken glass is cleared quickly, and we move back outside where it feels safer. And then we wait. We listen to the news on a battery radio, and eat comfort food. Once again, we don’t know what to do. I can’t get hold of two of my flatmates. They work in the hospital building, and they’re not replying to my messages. The worry builds in the back of my mind. Another friend arrives. He’s been in traffic for over two hours trying to get here. We all want to get home to our families and flatmates. I am offered my first ride on a motorbike, and I take it. Protective clothing on, I cling tightly to my friend’s back, fingers cramping. It is frightening and exhilarating as he weaves in and out of the jammed traffic, sliding on silt that has come up through liquefaction. I peek out to the left as we narrowly avoid gaping holes that have appeared in the roads. I can hear my heart thumping above the roar of the engine.
My arms are aching when we arrive at my home. It is still standing. One of my flatmates emerges teary eyed. We try to comfort each other with hugs. All of my flatmates are ok, and relief washes over me. We get straight into the chocolate. More comfort food.
As darkness nears, we gather together our resources, we have candles, torches, a corded phone and a battery radio (kindly sent to us by Meridian after September 4th). We also have a gas hob. We live in Avonside, so there is no power, water, or sewerage. Family and friends that live nearby call in. Horrible stories are shared. People have seen things that will be etched in their memories forever

part 3

We sit for long hours in silence just listening to the radio. I need to keep busy, so prepare a big meal for everyone at our house. Cooking in the dark. At least it keeps my mind occupied.
We go to bed, but after two large aftershocks I relocate to my flatmates bed and try to get some sleep in between dozens of aftershocks. The morning brings news that one of my flatmates has not heard from her parents. My 3 flatmates grab their bikes and cycle to Brighton, in search of news. I stay home alone in case they call our landline. I feel lost. I start to clean up, but the aftershocks make it difficult, I sweep dirt off the carpet and put rubbish in the bins outside. I receive a text. One of my good friends had been trapped in the Pyne Gould Corporation Building for ten hours, while his family and his fiancé waited frantically outside. He was pulled from the rubble with only minor cuts and scratches. My tears flood. The reality of the situation reaches a new level. My heart aches for them, and I am so pleased that he is safe. Another aftershock interrupts my misery and I find myself yelling obscenities at it.
Over the following days emotions are mixed. We feel extremely grateful that our friends, family and our home are all safe. There is an overwhelming sense of sadness for people who have lost their lives. We feel useless. We want to help, but we don’t know how. Our mobile phones are running out of power, and we need to stay in contact with family and friends. We dig a hole in our backyard, and laugh at the new level of friendship we will have to endure. We feel proud of the many people in our community who offer resources, even when their own are scarce. We feel tired. And still, we don’t know what to do.
Eventually we decide to leave the city for a while. My car is still inside the city cordons, so I get a lift with a friend up to Blenheim to my parent’s home. We go via Rolleston, and it is unbelievable how different the West side of the city looks. What earthquake? People are mowing their lawns. The anger builds up within me. I cannot fathom that so nearby people are carrying on with their lives.
Away from Christchurch and the feelings change to guilt. I have left a sinking ship. My city is devastated and I just ache to help.
The death toll continues to rise, but glimpses of hope reveal themselves. I see a couple I have taught a wedding dance to, beaming all over the media. She too was rescued from the PGC building. Their vows strengthened no end by the near loss.
Cries for help from Christchurch are answered. Every conversation ends with wishes of love and caring. People have come together, and our city will be rebuilt. Our ties to the city we live and work in feel stronger. We will all smile and dance again.

thanks ---your messages have been passed on to hazel

Update;

"Christchurch continues to be rocked by shallow aftershocks 10 days after last weeks deadly 6.3 earthquake with seven tremors in the space of 5 hours early this morning, the city had been shaken by a total of 217 aftershocks by 5.28 today--an average of more than 20 a day since the massive quake which brought down buildings and has so far claimed 170 confirmed dead. Fifty one of the aftershocks were above magnitude four, and four of those above magnitude 5. Most have been at a shallow depth, meaning the effects are felt more strongly"

Thanks again for the update. A good reminder that even when the world press (and our attention) moves on to other things (Libya for example), the people left to deal with these catastrophic events are still very much caught up in it. "Aftershocks" is really another word for earthquake, I'm sure it would be terrifying every time, and traumatizing for many.
Take care.

To John and Bob

from Hazel

Saturday 7th March
Nearly two weeks on and the stories keep rolling in. All of the flatmates are back together, and we have power, water and sewerage again!

My flatmate's boyfriend returned home to find his house burnt to the ground. Power had been on when he went away, but was turned off, and when it was restored an electrical fault destroyed his home and all his belongings. Him as his dog Dexter are staying at our place.

We had a dinner for family and friends, our kitchen steaming with fragrant rice, fresh salmon and shrimp. The atmosphere is light and relaxed, and it's a relief to be with people who are all riding a similar journey.

I'm back at work, we're operating out of my bosses house - her kitchen table a makeshift office. We've put together a plan for the next few months - business is not as usual - and won't be for some time. New teams have been created, and new roles.

This morning we've been at another house, digging out the silt. Three groups of people came in from the street to help. The people of Christchurch are building muscles they never knew they had. I found out I have abs...really deep down.

The city is still off limits - and the streets are like dirt tracks - 10km signs litter the neighbourhood. And so we keep living.
