Guitar strings?
Having just restrung 2 guitars it occurred to me that every time I buy strings It's like re inventing the wheel---------------
the shop person always has plenty of suggestions---new stock etc bronze vs steel , flat wound, straights, ( not coiled in the packet), light vs heavy, and of course brands!
Finally chose Martin SP phosphor bronze for the accoustic, and D'angelico lights for the electric.
We can't get straights here any more----------what do you use and what price -----------------I spent $46.00 for 2 sets !

I was hoping some fine muso would tell me of a brand /type that they swear by!

Unfortunately, anything that's on sale when I need them. I buy them anywhere from 10-30 sets at a time since I change them weekly as we gig almost weekly and practice some. I've tried them all, and aside from the cheapest ones which usually DO suck, I am hard pressed to tell much difference in any of the decent quality strings in initial nice fresh sound or lifespan. A lot of help I am!

i use Elixir acoustic & electric when i find them on sale. usually Fender Bullets and Gibson. i've also used old ones rinsed in vinegar or lemon juice, and boiled in water for a bit!! brightens them right up. i think they're called refurbished - - heh heh.

I WAS using D'Addario phospher/bronze. They sound bright on my mahogany top acoustic but die out pretty quick (I'll have to try that boiling in lemon juice trick!). So now I'm buying strings online at webstrings.com for about $4 a pack, delivered. This is a USA based company but I get them shipped to me in Canada no problem. The first set is still on my guitar and they seem to last a little longer than the D'addarios but they're a third of the price. I heard about this site from a friend who heard it from Amos Garrett (remember the guitar solo on 'Midnight At the Oasis'?) at a guitar workshop.

I use Elixers on the acoustic for recording but they're too expensive for everyday use. My guitar shop has it's own house brand which I think are just repackaged Mexican Martins. I use light/heavies on the the electrics (top 3 light, bottom 3 heavy) and medium/lights on the acoustics (yeah I'm a wimp!) These cost around $12 AUS a set, are bright and last longer than D'Addarios.

Hey what a great lot of useful ideas, and visual pictures!!! Muriel boiling guitar strings in her g string--------------?
That makes sense -----the mild acid would get rid of the Guitar gods crusty rusty sweat etc ? Thanks FTB, Laree, John,BJ And especially Squirly!!!!!!!!
