the art of being selfish
I used to have this friend who celebrated selfishness. I personally try not to go there because it's an evil dirty place. However if I care about someone I don't mind them being selfish because I too want to honor their self, please their deeper desires. This is a contradiction becase then I too should be selfish so they can have the joy of knowing my base desires and fullfilling those. It's very confusing. But I'm too selfishly lazy to want to work this all out, just thought I'd lay it on everybody else and ruin their day. :D

I heard a helpful hint that if you peel a banana from the bottom, you won't get any of those stringy things.

thats how the animals that actually live off bananas peel them.
seriously.
Hey, I think selfishness is a term we struggle with because we have two different things going on with us in civil society.
One is that we have our genes replicating through selection and mutation is a way that is compleltly "selfish" ( no moral conitation of the word) but then we have social strategies that are sometimes selfish in this ultimate sense and somes altruistic. But realy if we look closely Altruism has distinct evolutionary advantages. Being good is a good idea. The sort of Ayn Randian "enlightened self interest" movement is a game of ever diminishing returns. It's short sighted to say the least. It's taking the concept of "selfishness" that works well at the level of genetics and applying it to the more complicated arena of Sociology.
When it comes to getting along with each other and getting along with our environment it gets more complicated. Somtimes we have to work for the benefit of the whole, actually it seems to me that it becomes more and more imperative.
It still comes down to survival strategies, which is a kind of selfishness (again no moral conotation of the word intended there) somtimes the best strategy is kindness, compassion, sharing, overcomming fight or flight responses in favor of tending and befriending responses.
really, being good is a good idea.
