IMP Archiving
I gotta be honest..Had a long period of not really listening to any 'indie' (as in unsigned stuff) but have recently started to get alot more connected with it again...Alot of the new releases here - and especially -alot of the recent music in the Kayak 25 here has been fabulous, vibrant, melodic n creative..
Have got back into listening to my 'stations' i made before and am just amazed again at the quality of unsigned music uploaded here over the last 10 or so years..
Made me think,if this place had gone under -like it threatened to do many times - all the songs i'm now enjoying would be totally lost forever and i'd never be able to hear them any more..All those years building up stations of the coolest songs gone forever n wiped !!

Made me reflect on how important just in that way this place is, even if you don't include the community aspect and for us all personally to showcase our music....

I don't know the ins n outs of how IMP is functioning now -advert free-but i know Steve April has generously helped out alot in the background there - and Scott seems to be putting in some fantastic energy to get things moving..I know Bryon puts in alot of love n energy here too with his station adds and great reviews (would be great if there were more people doing that !)
Anyways serious kudos to you all..

I love Scotts idea about searching over the 'net to find the coolest music and bring it here...Its a noble cause and strikes me almost as a way of archiving for the future n keeping indie music alive and protecting the good stuff from total anihalation.....
Maybe not quite as important as Alan Lomax's blues field recordings lol-or the Northern Soul or psychedelic/punk obscure gem hunters keeping forgotten jewels from the past alive..but a noble n worthy cause nonetheless..

The net really needs more 'Gatekeepers' imo -those who can sort thru the oceans of crap/generic/mediocre and bring home the jewels for (hopefully) exposure to non muso listeners..
Its absoloutly THE ONLY WAY even open-minded members of the general public could ever get interested in the music we do -without video gimmicks or great live performance skills to 'sell' it

Its a tough call..Such an enormous amount of music uploaded everywhere ! Its humbling that there's sooooo much good music out there - and annoying that it just gets mixed together n lost in the sea of mediocrity- and the amount of each kind is just gonna get bigger n bigger n bigger with each passing year with the ease of technology and half the population of the world -talented or not- becoming 'artists' who wanna be listened to..

Yes, as I understood this, there should be an archive site associated with IMP where the music can be preserved and always accessible should IMP ever does fold (hope not).
I have music at Soundclick as well as other music friends, but recently one was blocked and all his songs are forever gone. Hundreds of songs, poof, vanished! That is until he re-uploads them here and/or elsewhere. But for the moment no one can hear those songs (many which I do love!) and kicking my head for not downloading those songs (Never thought they would disappear!) So, yes, an archive would be a nice thing to have!

I think what Steve was saying is that to some extent, IMP is archiving the best artists on the web and this is true. From day one, the roots of the original site was a long list of the best artists on different sites, I went from site to site finding the best and inviting them here. We did garageband and soundclick and song planet and download.com, we did that big site in Europe, pretty much everywhere we could find. I get great personal thrill when an act I really love shows up on the pages here. Yes there are too many now to cover them all and that's why I'm always asking for volunteers for talent scouts, if you find em, I'll invite them.

It also pains me a lot when somebody puts a good song here and then for one reason or another removes it. I recently spent some time tracking some of the previous Kayak #1 songs that were no longer on the site.

It's hard to imagine and see the big picture but in my mind, the best music being created in this generation is indeed found in this realm and not on the mainstream. The difference is, because of the mechanisms of the music business, the best songs and artists just don't get to see the light of day. In most cases nobody gets to hear them, unless you're an indie music person and mine for them with some tenaciousness.

btw, Steve Ison, along with being one of the best indie artists out there, has a great legacy as a talent finder as well, having turned me on to some of the best indie acts that ever existed. It was on his garageband stations that I found many of the acts that I brought here as the nucleus of this site.

well I been around a few site in my day reverbnation etc etc,
One site noisehead I meet a guitar player of Mayor Myx
http://www.mayormyx.nl/indexnewsgb.html

He is in the Netherlands now this guy is very talented and a nice guy I worked with him on a re-make of one of my songs at one time. We never officially published it because I could not get the recoding of my part done well enough to do his part justice.

Anyway this guy would be a great addition of talent if your recruiting acts probably on the same level as shaman. Now I know some people think we don't want bigger acts on this site but I think they bring followers and that is a good thing.
Steve is right this site is one of the best archives of Indy rock anywhere.
TSC,
Ken

It is very easy to take for granted, Steve. At least it was before the relaunch this year.
What Scott has done deserves more than just credit, it deserves our support.
Note, -Advert free-
some of us are better off than others when it comes to monetary disposition, but regardless of our ability to give money, ie; pay for services we receive, we CAN give our support.
I agree about station building.
It is one thing that could help attract (potentially) paying artists who enjoy the exposure and attention.
You brought up Bryon and his station building. Shit, sometimes I think he is the only one doing it, but I gotta say, when he adds one of your tracks, it's a great feeling and it is worth something.

I Like that you posted this, Steve. I agree with you about this place being somewhat of the Holy Grail of indie sites - it certainly warrants our support.
