Nick Drakes mum
Molly Drake was a beautiful songwriter in her own right-and sounds eerily like Nick in style..

How Wild The Wind Blows is such a magical, haunting song..

Wow! Darkly Nostalgic! Betcha Tom Waits knew of her. Thanks for posting this
Steve....gotta check out Nicks music too. I love 'out of the way' artists and have
only heard the name Nick Drake. What would be a good album of his to start with Steve?...also....would it be possible to get a page up here for Molly? Although she
is no longer with us...the world needs 2 hear her music and I think it would fit
into the indie realm hands down....her 2 songs would be a wonderful addition to
Cabaret Noir, eh? :)

I'm only slightly familiar with Nick Drake's music, but it's clear that the acorn doesn't fall too far from the tree. Great stuff.

Thanks for listening everyone-glad yuz enjoyed it :)

Larry..Yeh,it'd be great for Molly to have a page here..I'd prob add 'How Wild The Wind Blows' to Psychfolk tho-'cos its so haunting!
Molly Drake's got no official album released as far as i know, tho alot of her songs are included on Family Album-a mix of Nick her-and family singing(tho strangely dosn't include How Wild The Wind Blows)

Nick only released 3 official albums in his life.. Five Leaves Left,Bryter Layter and Pink Moon and all of them are really worth getting imho..I'd also get Made To Love Magic,a posthumous album of great songs not on his other albums and intriguing different versions of ones on there..
..
Like most of Bowies 70s albums, Rubber Soul onward Beatles and Velvet Underground for instance, the albums are just great quality and magical-so i wouldn't make the mistake i did of buying a compilation first and then having to fork out for alot of the same songs again when you buy the albums!

Joe Boyd(Nicks producer) said in a program broadcast on BBC Radio 2 that of all the people he had lent one of Drake's CDs to, one or two had come back to him saying it was "okay". The rest, he said, had gone out and bought all of Nick's material shortly after hearing one of his albums.

Enjoying a listen to Mrs. Drake right now...reminds me of growing up with my mother, grandmother and great-grandmother all playing piano...though we lacked such a pleasing voice in our household (sorry, Mom!)...I love what you said about the compilation bit - I've made that mistake too...I'm not familiar with Nick either. Off to have a listen. Seems his name has been coming up often lately...thanks, Stevey...

I will be checking this out today.
Thanks, Steve!

And, Hugh... save yourself some time and just go buy the entire Nick Drake catalog right now. Seriously. Nobody was ever like him and nobody ever will be.

Elliott Smith tried but, as great as he was, he was not Nick Drake.

Having a listen to the stuff at the "Nick Drake Annual Gathering" page now...very evocative - digging the strings...interesting to see he was produced by Joe Boyd, a name I recognize only from Clapton...this is the thing...listening to Nick I'm reminded of a lot of the folks around here - and struck by the "pro" recordings...it does indeed make me want to open up HONEST RECORDS and get the friggin' show on the road...gawd, I hate business.

xxoo,
H

Steve, not sure if you read trade mags, but EQ has a very interesting article with Joe Boyd and John Wood, they present an exclusive look Inside Nick Drake’s legendary studio sessions. I found it fascinating.

Todd..I think the Eliott Smith comparison is a little unfair..Elliott,altho sharing a similar melancholy and emotional intelligence in his music to Nick, was very much his own artist and distinct n authentic in his own right imo..

Hugh..I agree with Todd tho as in investing in his whole catalogue..
Even disregarding the quality of his songs, they're brilliant examples of how to record acoustic-based music

Thanks alot for the article Gary..Fascinating-no i'd never seen it before..
I had no idea Nick recorded live with the strings!
Riverman,Fruit Tree and another one all done in 3 hours-amazing..
Makes me realise how great it is to get alot of LIVE performance..Very difficult if you're a one man show like so many of us here-but the sound can be fantastic..

Steve-
I agree that the comparison is unfair. Still, people feel that they need a point of refrence when looking into new artists and, while the comparison is unfair, it's also the closest that I could come up with, given the unique artist that Nick was.

But yes, Elliott was his own man and a fantastic artist in his own right. Still, as a point of refrence, the influence was obvious. And, therefore, logical.

OK Todd..I think i got you wrong..I thought you were implying Elliotts whole raison d'etre was to be the 'new' Nick Drake-which is obviously not what you meant at all lol
Yeh,as a general reference for mood/feel he's definitely valid-I agree...
