Really disappointed in Obama that he doesn't seem to want to prosecute Bush and Cheney for clear war crimes.

He says he prefers to look forward, hasn't ruled it out or having his Attorney General look into it, but like somebody said, wouldn't it be special if all criminals could get off the hook because the prosecutor wanted to "look forward".

Personally I look forward to the public trial of Bush and Cheney for authorizing the ILLEGAL torture that they've publically admitted being in the loop on.

I'm afraid Obama's plate is rather full at the moment ... and I'd much rather see him concentrate on the good things he can do for this country right now ...

We asked for change ... let's get on with it ... LET'S DO SOMETHING POSITIVE instead of whining about the past ....

I didn't say that .... but now that you mention it ... if it were up to me ... I think in the interest of continued smooth transitions of power, it's good to follow the well-established custom that here in the U.S., the new guy doesn't have his predecessor arrested - or worse. It's one of several things that still distinguish us from banana republics.

That's a nice thought but in history, if these guys get off the hook, Obama will be thought of in the same breath as Ford for pardoning Nixon, except in my opinion turning America into a country that tortures is worse than Nixon's crimes.

Ford did that in service of the above-mentioned custom; it took guts, was the right thing to do, and probably cost him the election. Better to let the occasional miscreant walk than to endanger our system of government, which is not just the Constitution, but also the many customs, practices, and precedents intertwined with it.

There is a fine line between holding leaders accountable and undermining the democracy.

Bottom line is: prosecuting Bush and/or Cheney WOULD lead to civil unrest. Especially in as destabilized economy as we have (which tends to make folks edgy, anyway). It'd get a portion of the population riled up that we would have riots at least, and full-blown civil war, at worst. And no, that is not an exaggeration.

Thank God our new Commander-In-Chief is more thoughtful than you are, or we'd be even more screwed than we already are.

I think Bush was a terrible president. I really doubt there is much of a legal case that would work against his administration. That doesn't mean what they did (especially regarding torture) isn't wrong. I twas clearly wrong. It's just not a legal fight anyone's likely to win. If you study how it's played in courts so far, then you'll see there is little chance it would make headway in the legal system.

It would be a losing case that would cost zillions and break unity in the country in a major way.

And I repeat that if you thought Obama would pursue that angle, then you haven't paid much attention to who he is and how he operates.

The problem with Bush is inherent in the constitution. Presidential powers are not well defined, and many presidents have run away with the holes in the constitution. If you want a legal remedy, we're going to need some more ammendments to the (very short) article regarding presidential powers,.

Short of that, we'll surely have another rampant cowboy in control sometime down the road.

It's not an excuse, Holo.
It's a practical fact. Times are tense.

Yes, Bush was a godawful president. However, for him to be placed on-trial in an American court of law would not only be unprescedented, but also extremely distracting from the work at-hand. And yes, it could be more than distracting, but disruptive. especially now.

Bush is gone.
Let's get our priorities straight:
Fix what's broken.
Then, once tempers have settled and we have a little space between now and when a trial might be, we can decide whether or not it would be appropriate to pursue something like that.

You are a hothead, Holo.

I'm surprised that no one seems aware of the fact Obama is planning on expanding the war in Afghanistan which has the potential of becoming a costlier affair than the one we got ourselves involved in Iraq. To Obama's credit he didn't start that involvement but history teaches us that no foreign power has ever prevailed in Afghanistan so why would he want to increase our military involvement there?

Any answers?

How many American lives are worth trying to find someone that many sources feel has been dead for years now Holo?

The following sums up just what we're heading into pretty well.

"Obama, who has vowed to end the Iraq war, has instead pledged to escalate our involvement in Afganistan trading one war for another. Does this make any sense to anyone? Why would the American people, who turned against the Iraq fiasco, continue to support an equally hopeless campaign in Afganistan that hasn't been stabilized in almost 8 years? A country that has never been fully conquered by foreign powers going back to Alexander the Great. Why would he want to expand the war just as our allies are bailing out? How can he reduce the deficit without cutting spending on these mideast wars including Afganistan? Why is Afganistan anymore important than Iraq when it doesn't even have oil. Is the guy nuts or just another stooge for the military-industrial complex and the neo-con looneys?"

This is just my point of view and I am sure there are lots of people who appreciate a variety of opinions.. it's possible peace could be closer than you all think.. as I have noticed and said before in a number of ways, the road to peace has to start with each of us rather than placing all of our hopes on governments or politicians. Don't think as just one individual person you do not have an effect in the world with what you choose to bring to it.

Yep.. I know, that means looking within yourself and on a daily basis that we might use a hint of compassion for our neighbors as you most likely do not know each other at all.

"Osama bin Laden is dead. The news first came from sources in Afghanistan and Pakistan almost six months ago: the fugitive died in December [2001] and was buried in the mountains of southeast Afghanistan. Pakistan's president, Pervez Musharraf, echoed the information. The remnants of Osama's gang, however, have mostly stayed silent, either to keep Osama's ghost alive or because they have no means of communication. Click for full sized image
With an ego the size of Mount Everest, Osama bin Laden would not have, could not have, remained silent for so long if he were still alive. Pakistan's Musharraf: Bin Laden probably dead

Pakistan's president says he thinks Osama bin Laden is most likely dead because the suspected terrorist has been unable to get treatment for his kidney disease.

Care to guess which country this oil will have to be transported through if Western Oil Companies can successfully tap these reserves Holo? (So enough of the "get Bin Laden" nonsense..)

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/centralasia/uzbek-energy.htm

"Uzbekistan currently possesses about 600 million barrels of proven oil reserves, but this is soon expected to increase. There are 171 oil and gas fields, over 60% of which are in the Bukhara-Kiva region, which accounts for about 70% of Uzbekistan's oil production. The second largest is the Fergana region, which contains about 20% of Uzbekistan's oil fields. There are also oil deposits being developed in southwestern Uzbekistan at Kokdumalak, Shurtan, Olan, Urgin, and south-Tandirchi. Oil exploration is also being pursued on the Ustyurt plateau and in the Aral Sea.

The Uzbek government is offering production sharing agreements (PSAs) in over 80 of the oil fields (estimated to contain about 1.2 billion barrels of oil), which is expected to attract $400 million in investment. Of the oil fields offered, 78 are contained in 16 exploration blocks. There are also eight individual fields -- four in the Southwest Gissar Basin (Dzharkuduk, Gumbulak, South Kizilbairak, and South Tandircha) and four in the Amudarya region (North Shurtan, Shakarbulak, South Kemachi, and Umid). Having seen several videos of Bin Laden where he comments on current things, it's hard to believe he's dead, although I haven't seen any of those for at least a year now, so who knows.

I really don't think, and no one has claimed, he is the sole or even top reason for engagement in afghanistan. Terrorist support and training have for some time been centered there. That was the correct target after 9/11, and that is well known.

Sterlin's point is valid: no one ever prevails in that country, and you can be sure all parties understand this problem.

It's still the appropriate target of our efforts in a way that Iraq was not.

3. Obama will not prosecute...(because that's not what the president does, but I still have some hope that the discovery process itself in several detainee cases will lead to Rumsfeld and Cheaney and Bush and Ashcroft...)

4.Our screwing around in Afghanistan and Uzbekistan and the Caspian region is motivated by OIL, but it's become a nastier mess than that now..just like last time)

You will back them 100 percent ... no matter what they do ... because you are racist.... or you wouldn't make such blanket statements ...

You have every right to see things the way you want to see things ... just know that everyone else has that right also ...

I NEVER BLINDLY FOLLOW ANY RELIGION, GOVERNMENT, PERSON or ENTITY .... just because they are "MY" people ... everyone is "MY" people ... and their are BAD guys on ALL fronts ....

Larree, you are boring. You turn every political thread into "Look at me, I'm Jewish and everything Israel does is perfect". America favors no ally more, I don't think you have that much to complain about re: Americans. I don't see anybody really disagreeing with you outside the occasional crank, so give it a rest?

The Bush family did business with the Bin Laden family for years....so...it makes sense to me that he wouldn't actually go kill the guy's son.

actually, I brought it up....

and yes, you do have the right to respond.

you sound like an over the top Zionist nutcase and a racist at times, but thats still within your rights......

What Israel actually wants is to expel all of the Palestinian peoples, send them away, and then get rid of the 19.5% of Israels population that is Arab.
Israel's Parliament has passed a law preventing Palestinians who marry Israelis from living in Israel.
Israel does not want a democratic state for all Jews Christians and Muslims, they want an Gigantic jewish country club with strict racial/religious exclusivity...and we pay to help them do this.

Israel condemns Saudi Arabia for this religious Apartheid but practices the very same thing by a slow attrition and walls and gunships and bulldozers and Anser3 Prison...and legislation.
Israeli Arab political party Balad, recently banned from the upcoming general elections by Israel's central elections committee, warned on Wednesday that if the court upholds the committee's decision, the party will call for a boycott of the elections and establish an alternative Arab parliament.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree Panick and if you think your own views wouldn't be hardened by the daily threat of annihilation not to mention people exploding in crowded buses, restaurants, other public places, well you're simply wrong. If a different part of the world, a different culture, one you'll never be able to understand unless you're a part of it.

Myself, I'd be happy to build each Palestinian family a nice suburban home somewhere away from where they live now so this conflict will finally end. There's plenty of space in the Greater Middle East to do this and I'd even bring them to America if no one else will take them in. It may not be right but it's better than what both sides must endure right now. That's the only peaceful end I can see to this conflict.

George Washington, first president, said this: "It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world."

Eldridge Cleaver, civil rights leader, said this: "Americans think of themselves collectively as a huge rescue squad on 24-hour call."

Toby Keith, populist country singer, said this: "This big dog will fight when you rattle his cage — and you'll be sorry that you messed with the U.S. of A."

Eldridge Cleaver ... and Toby Keith ... are full of shit ....

pardon,
back 2 topic
I just watched some news footage with no sound, various locations and events,
The body language depicted Cheney as "working" Bush,
I reckon they both should be dropped off by chopper in the middle of baghdad and left to it.

"WASHINGTON (AP) — The Bush administration is aggressively pushing back against a federal court order instructing the most important offices in the White House to preserve all of their e-mail.

In court papers late Friday, the administration argued that a federal court has no authority to impose such a requirement on the offices of President George W. Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and the National Security Council.

The issue underscores the administration's narrow view of the court's authority in lawsuits over the White House's problem-plagued e-mail system.

The administration argued that none of the court's orders can apply to parts of the White House subject to the Presidential Records Act."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nope .... Bush and his cronies have nothing to hide ... or do they ?

I find it rather Bush like ... he aggressively wanted the power to read anyone's emails ... and yet, he thinks no one should read his ? ... I think he forgets who he works for ....

... of course the same people who said "Hey if you have nothing to hide you shouldn't have a problem with the Government reading your emails" .. are now the ones saying ... "Noone should read peoples emails" ... HA !!!!!!

I used to work with an Palestinian guy, and he said, Israel should not exist, they should be out of there period. So this is how the Palestinians feel....which is why they keep fighting Israel and sending suicide bombers in to kill ordinary people on buses or wherever...I believe this war will go on until one exterminates the other. Israel does have powerful weapons, and the bible says "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" so that is why they attack the Palestinians because the Palestinians attack them. So it looks bad what Israel is doing bombing the Palestinians, but it is true they constantly try to kill Jews every chance they can. I don't agree with either side...I wish they could have peace, but I don't think they will ever have peace.

Pelosi vows Bush probe, open to prosecutions

In a Sunday Fox interview that's sure to get the attention of box-packers at 1600, Speaker Nancy Pelosi indicated she's open to backing prosecutions that arise from Congressional hearings into a range of controversial Bush White House actions.

"I think you look at each item and see what is a violation of the law and do we even have a right to ignore it," the California Democrat told Chris Wallace.

Last week House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) called for criminal investigations of Bush administration Iraq and anti-terror policies.

Pelosi was careful to skate carefully between Conyers and Barack Obama, who hasn't foreclosed the possibility of prosecutions while saying he was more eager to look forward than backwards.

But she was far less restrained when asked about the White House role in the firings of eight U.S. attorneys, vowing to push forward on hearings that could lead to prosecutions.

"That's not up to us to say that doesn't matter anymore... We cannot let the politicizing of, for example, the Justice Department to go unreviewed," she added. "I want to see the truth come forth."
