Have you seen this recent hassle they gave Letterman? Anyone with even half a brain knows Dave was talking about her older daughter but I guess they think Americans are really stupid or something.

After all, imagine how upset you would feel if it were your fourteen year old daughter's baby who could be facing a hefty fine and suspension at birth after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs.

Come on Larree, show some common sense. The joke wasn't about the ballgame, it was about the Palins. Obviously it was about the daughter that got knocked up while in their household.
The sick part about this is that it's another example of them exploiting their own kids for political gain. Like when Sarah brought the baby onstage or brought the kids "out" for the Republican convention. Even bringing up the topic of rape was certainly very foolish and wrong to do. It backfired on them as usual, because they're just stupid.

Holo, you have a way of setting up your opinions by insulting anyone that does not agree with you.. Here, if someone thinks otherwise they are lacking even half a brain.
Bottom line, this was a stupid, careless Joke. I don't think he was talking about the fourteen year old...however Dave and his staff should have done their homework. The younger daughter attended the game, this joke should have been scratched.
I think Dave should have included this in his response.....he did not mention the fourteen year old being at the game. The joke would not have worked if it was not known Palin was there with her daughter...would it? He should have said he screwed up and should not have said it when this fact was known. People are not required to give Dave the benefit of doubt, The fact is the fourteen year old was the only daughter who attended the game... stupid move on Dave's part.
Is Palin using this for political gain? sure....but Dave is getting a ratings boost and he loves it. As for politicians and their families, they have been dragging them on stage as far back as I can remember...Obama did the same. It is disingenious to slam her for it.
I don't think she can beat an incumbent President, especially one with the popularity of Obama. Obama is the only one that can screw things up.....
The more Palin is slammed by the liberal media for her response, the more attention she gets... and I think this was Palin's goal all along.

I don't care how you think he should've worded his joke, you all know that's what it wasn't about and you're a disingenuous pile of poopoo if you deny that.
The joke was not unlike hundreds of jokes told like that by late night comics. You're like church marms here, it's ridiculous.

Holo, just to offer an example as i feel people have in various ways.. these views you suggest are why most people are sick and tired of those who do not take responsibility for their opinions as their own, why project onto people you don't even know..? The fact that you've promoted yourself and ideas as FACT for so long speaks volumes. I think people have been more than patient here, speaking calmly and with reason of mind yet you don't get the damage of your words and over time. You don't have to agree with criticism but we might all learn something about the effect we have in communities such as this if you really take the moment to look upon yourself with such honesty, and of course this is just my opinion as well.

Classic case of commerce vs public/private ... and it means absolutely nothing of substance.
Letterman's stock and trade is jokes. The public didn't know or care that the Palins' were in NY w/ their 14 year old. The GP is relatively blissfully ignorant of most details of the news, and may have only known that the Palin family was in NY w/o full knowledge of the details.
That said, what is going to be funny to the public is a joke about the Palins from what they know:
> What she looks like (the stewardess joke)
> What's GENERALLY KNOWN of her family ... being her child's bastard child while running as VP. (The knocked up joke ... and others)
> Their religious beliefs (other jokes to be written ... because their jokes and gaining national status is on THEIR agenda ... nobody's fault but theirs)
... all the while never mind that the other people didn't complain that the joke was primarily about THEM ... with the Palins as a contextual background.

Holo "sometimes" goes over the top, but he's absolutely 100% spot on this point.
You put yourself out there and EVERYTHING YOU HOLD NEAR AND DEAR IS SUBJECT TO EVERYTHING THE PUBLIC WILL THROW AT IT.
You don't get to set the "rules" when you are in the national eye. There are no rules. The Palins are experienced enough with that to know what to expect ... so chew on that a sec ...
It's like the teacher in NY who posed nude in a major publication and then got mad because she got fired.
SAME dynamic.
Which means that all this is is the Palin's mining publicity to remain in the spotlight ... keeping the name alive, so to speak.
Which ... of course ... is a politician's stock and trade.
Discussing it simply feeds both needs.
I'd rather let it die.

All about ratings folks
The Letterman ratings took a nosedive when Conan O'brien took to the airwaves with his new show...so the suits over at letterman's end had a big pow wow and gambled and won, the Lettermen shows ratings took off north after the dip south and Conan's went a bit south recently and leveled off....so next move, well probably it is Conan having Palin on his show : )
again. lets just let it be for what it is. networks going for that big surge.

it has everything to do with the suits and writers at the Networks, they plan this stuff out. just like I explained, I have been involved with this type of thing and it all has to do with one upmanship and getting a jump on your competitors and getting a buzz going and that is what lettermans group did.they were losing points and their market share..their ratings dipped drastically , they had to recover that and got a bounce from It .had nothing to do with the Palins.and everything to do with market share and how to get people back in the fold and watch lettermans show because they would be expecting more of the same ...but obviously you dont get that and wont accept that fact. Media works that way...

Holo it was discussed once they caught wind of Palin being in NYC,and there writers came up with this juicy tidbit, (which IMO was tasteless ) like I said lettermans show was suffering something bad when his show went into a drastic freefall in the ratings..., they had to turn it around,they jumped at this opportunity and created quite a stir, free advertising, media blows it all out of proportion ,like Kevin said it sure be nice to take a fire hose to these dopes and clean up the swill that is talked about on these programs.. but that is the show biz, and these guys know what they are doing. it is all about getting points and your market share and or more
that is it. if you still dont get it and how this biz works then you just dont get it...

He must be very busy to ignore reading his own threads. That's fine. There is a recession on ... and we all have become MUCH more concerned with revenue generation.
I'm not insulting Holo, I'm respectful of his personal challenges. But his comment seems hurried and not mindful of other posters ... and that must be his world these days.
It's a hard world.
Most aren't quite themselves ... (especially here in anon land) so replies are hurried, and full explanations of complex issues may not satisfy.
If viewed outside of stupid bbs convo ... Holo is a person I'd like to have a wine with and discuss matters of the world. At least he cares about matters of the world.
You would be another. I know you are conservative ... and I lean that way myself ... outside of religious alliances ... I don't equate the two.
Still ... we all must concentrate on what counts elementally ... where we all find basics in common ... for when thing get rough, decency counts most.

I like Letterman. He's a funny and witty guy.
I haven't been around much. Just finished schooling in the Medical Assistant Program and doing my externship now. It keeps me busy but I still try to pop in once in a while and check things out.
It would be cool to actually sit down to dinner and discussion with all the numerous caring and exciting minds around here! So long as I can refrain from using those four-letter words!!

I am sure you will twist this to suit you biased outlook....If you start using your "own" analysis instead of being clouded by your hate for all things conservative you will be more effective in trying to get your message out.
Also, when you call someone an Idiot when not full reading or "understanding" a response to your blog, the stand up thing to do is "apologize"..I won't hold my breath.

You fell for opportunistic, child-exploiting Sarah and Todd Palin who if they had an ounce of common sense would know Dave wouldn't talk about the 14 year old getting knocked up. Instead they proceeded to talk about their young daughter being raped to try to score political points. I will add that it would not surprise me one bit if the 14 year old did get knocked up, though it wouldn't be by Alex Rodriguez but some Alaskan homeboy. :>)
Bryon thanks for the shoutout but Letterman is a sincere guy, he felt bad that his joke was perceived that way, and he surely didn't tell it specifically for a ratings boost. I read today that Conan O'Brian has told many more jokes about the Palin daughter getting pregnant, how come nobody is making a fuss about him?

I had NO idea which daughter was at 'the game'. I have NO idea which game it was.
I DO know that the 18 year old daughter who is an unwed mother is the spokesperson for a national abstinence group, which imho opens her up to political satire. Why do you think she, of all the unwed mothers in America, was picked as the spokesperson? Might it be because of who her mother is?
The joke was a lame joke, and quite obviously meant for the older daughter. Letterman not only explained, but he apologized for any misunderstanding. You folks- on both sides- who are getting all overwrought need to go listen to some music and chill, me thinks.
The folks on the fringes not only don't have a sense of humor but seem to lack common sense, it seems.

At the news conference, Palin was flanked by comedians Larry The Cable Guy and Dennis Miller. Both expressed support for Palin and agreed comedy had gone 'too far' in a direction they called "un-funny, un-American and un-good." When asked by reporter Tommy Christopher about the ramifications of mass censorship, Mr. The Cable Guy replied, "Censorship? Git 'er done!". Palin made a brief statement in which she said that jokes about rape clearly crossed a line, particularly since rape was so serious a crime that women should be required to pay for their own rape kits and should be forced to carry a pregnancy to term if they were raped. She said that it wasn't funny that Alaska's rate of rape and sexual assault were high above the national average and that it also wasn't humorous in any way that her promotion of 'abstinence only' sex education had resulted in her teenage daughter becoming an unwed teenage mother. Reporters sat quietly since none of this was, in fact, funny and Palin has recently banned irony.
Palin responded to questions about whether Letterman had unfairly exploited her children for publicity by throwing her baby with Down's syndrome at Helen Thomas's head, then pointing in another direction and screaming 'Socialist!' a high screechy voice.
When asked about her former running mate John McCain having made a joke in 1998 about Chelsea Clinton being 'ugly', Czarina Palin pointed out that jokes about the Clintons are funny. A nearly dead Dennis Miller agreed.
The announcement of Pain's new position was made by Governor Palin's husband, Todd. It's not clear if the Obama administration is aware of the appointment.

Dave apologized, time to get a life.
