It's a super-bot world out there
We all know how stats can be manipulated (faked) but did you realize how the fakers are making more money out of your music than you. It probably started 10 years or so ago, you pay x $ and get up to between 10k and 50k plays in a couple of days. It was a great shortcut to making your social media account/website look busy so that real listeners think you must be good. The hope was that it would start the ball rolling for you to trend.
The problem was we all got to recognize the songs and artist who had become 'botified' because there was no listener comments or interaction..... and often it was quite obvious that the quality of the music didn't justify the 'buzz'
So the fakers got clever and somehow managed to guarantee fake comments, reviews, re-tweets etc - just go to soundcloud for example and see the trending chart toppers crammed with activity and showing millions of plays... now listen to the song (sorry if you're giving them a real play) and you'll realize that the last thing that matters is music.
Before you spend your hard earned on a service to promote you there are warning signs to spot fakes and scams.
If they give a hard number of plays instead of a range (Fake)
If they talk about them being 'safe' plays (Fake)
If they guarantee likes, comments, and re-posts (Fake)
I'd love to hear anyone's experiences with buying in popularity.

I knew people who ran up their friends' list on My Space by joining the Friend Train. This was sadly accompanied by record labels actually using My Space friend lists to determine which acts are popular.

Unfortunately every time people detect obvious fake plays, friends, likes etc someone will create a new more sophisticated script (which they will sell you)
You only have to google things like 'how to increase your following' 'buy more plays' 'fake your shoutcast listener count' 'improve your radio analytics' etc and you'll find pages of ways to cheat. Sometimes it's obvious like every page refresh gives another play, sometimes it's subtle where you're persuaded by testimonials of 'successful clients'
It's just so cruel to tell a new, often young artist/band that they are really great and they should invest in your services - of course they're going to think that it's worth going into debt if it makes them more popular. We've all been tempted to trust third parties to do what we can't do and most of us fall for sweet talk and compliments.
Unless you have real interaction with real people using real words and actions you can end up living on a fake pedestal in isolation with just fake numbers to look at. So value a real listener, they are worth more than a billion ghosts.
Because there's no way to make a living out of downloads (0.003c) the only way to get rich is to be a fixer, faker, flatterer, 'friend', fraud, financial adviser, facilitater - all the 'Fs' in fact

The one thing that will probably never change (until we're all living with our helmets on in a virtual world) is you build a fan-base by playing and performing in front of real people. The tried and true way since the beginning of the creation of music. Create a good sound and go out to places where people can hear you!

Right on Jeff, I have been saying this for a long time here, and it is a building process
and I have been fortunate to have promoted a lot of bands over the years to radio, and even managing some and getting them fests and even playing with one of the bands when i first started promoting. perhaps I will link up a few of them here who are regionally successful and some who have toured Europe, none of them have hit the big time, but I know I have helped them in a small way getting their sound out there
but yes. getting in front of an audience, playing your stuff, selling your wares , paying your dues. Its a tough slog indeed, but there is joy in performing and meeting people, cause relationships is everything. in anything and everything we do. I do everything within my power to develop strong ongoing relationships in this promotions biz, and here at IMP. you have to treat people with respect and consideration, it will take you a long long ways
