Virtual Busking ...
As download sales per se aren't exactly filling my bank account I've decided to try a slightly different tack to making money from my music. (online)

I've added a paypal donate button in the form of a guitar case to my artist page (and a few other places such as my own website) in the hope that people listening but not buying might like to donate and there fund further music creation. I've done a fair amount of real life busking during my music career so I'm comfortable with the concept.

What do think think? Good idea, bad idea, does it devalue my music? (this is something I angst about when real life busking these days, which I now restrict to local destinations, I won't busk in a town I want to gig in).

Opinions welcome, contributions even more so :-) [Although I realise many here are struggling artists like my slef :-) It's the listeners I want to catch...]

That's a cool idea, the paypal in shape of guitar case.

We saw TONS of REALLY good Buskers when we were in London, England... and that's exactly how they do it!

-Keep strugglin' & doin' your music --It's ALL worth it! -phlegm

I think it's a GREAT idea Andy ..... and I don't think it "devalues" your music one iota !

When I first started busking I was a bit shy ... and it showed in my pocket too .. when I became more at ease it usually meant better pay ... I kind of had this idea in my head, at first, that people were just paying my to be kind, but I soon got over this by remembering that I used to go to parks and pay buskers and it wasn't out of pity ... it was because I enjoyed their music ...

I see nothing wrong with doing this in the cyberspace world either ... I hope you find it successful and rewarding...

uh... yeah I should have said keep pluggin' away (I pulled the strugglin' from your strugglin' artist phrase) =:-) ==> I would LOVE to have a little less struggle and A LOT more MUSIC myself!

Anyhoo... Please let us know if the PAYPAL idea works! It would be a good idea, 'cause most people choose NOT to download, even when they like the song. OR they search elsewhere for a FREE download!

Anyhoo-- Keep struglin' urrrr.. I mean Keep on Truckin'! -phlegm

Great Idea! Why should a guy playing guitar on a street corner (or here in CA on Snata Monica Pier) make hundreds of dollars from donaions but if we're online ...nothing. I think the computer numbs people into forgetting there's really people that create this music. If for nothing else the donation button will remind them of that! Hope it works well. Give us an update!

Thanks for all the positive feedback on this idea, I'll let you know how it goes.

I'm not expecting fortunes, but we'll see.

The most importtant thing is to get more traffic to the sites, as busking on an 'empty street' will never make you rich ....

Beth:

Busking for real can be daunting the first time, but once you get used to it it's a great way to performance text your material, you can meet interesting people, on my first busk I met the singer in what became my first band and the organiser of the local folk club, who encouraged me to come down for a floor spot. Do keep you eyes open for less savory types though, not everyone on the street is nice... use your common sense and move if you feel uncomfortable.
