Do you Tag your mp3 files properly?
As I use AmigaOS as my main machine, I have no flash player in my browser. So I utilise a browser _ which redirects the mp3 stream into my media player, that way I can listen to IAC without having to turn on my noisy linux server.
(The stream is discarded afterwards as I'm not into piracy...)

One thing I've noticed by doing this, is that a very large percentage of people fail to add ID3 tags to there mp3 files before uploading!

Well you might think that it doesn't matter as the IAC player displays this info, but if I can capture a stream for a legimate reason, then others will capture the stream and keep amybe even distribute the result. So your music will be out there in the wild, unmarked. Anyone who likes it and is passed a copy, won't know who they are listening too. Won't ever search the net to find you, and hear more. Certain sites that use ID3 for listening statistics will never record your existance, etc etc.

If your download versions aren't tagged then anyone legimately buy your mp3 also has an unmarked file. The same applies to this.

All mp3 files should have the track title, album title if appropriate, artist name, genre, and perhaps contact details in the comment field.

I just did a straw poll, and of five files played

1 was correctly tagged (it was one of mine, I was checking the IAC stremer player didn't remove the tags before ranting)
1 was partly tagged by had Track 4 as the track name, not helpful if you don't have the track listing to hand. and the other three were totaly untagged.

Sort it out people!

Update:

Increased by straw sample to 7 tracks....

1 had id3-v1 only better than nothing, but wont show up in all players, and one had a blank id3 tag, that's worse than no tag at all!!

Great bit of info there. Thanks! I usually don't tag my stuff but you make a compelling case for doing so.

I've just got to comment on your use of the Amiga. Man, you are hardcore! I've owned a few of them and at one time ran my business with a Toaster/Flyer in an Amiga4000. I still have a 2000 that I use to power a time base corrector. It's been running for at least 13 years non-stop (except for power outages). Once a year or so, I hook a monitor up to it and it's still cranking right along. They were amazing machines! It's nothing short of miraculous what you can do with 25mhz. You're kind of like a computer Amishman. I bow to your loyalty.

Explain to me this "tagged" thing.
Seriously.
I'm not exactly sure as to what it is.

Cool. I do in fact populate my ID3 tag before I upload. Most definitely.

How did you get your results to view the ID3 tags?

Are you saying you circumvented the IAC player and captured the stream in order to download to your computer, (in order to be able to view the id3 tags)? If so, did you pay the artists for the downloads or were they offering them for free? Or is there a way to bypass the IAC player, and view the actual contents of the ID3 tag without needing to download it?

My AW16g asks for a project name for each new tune I create. I thought it transfered the title over to my PC. I guess it just labels my song in the mixer unit. But then again when I put my songs into Itunes for my Ipod, I have to edit the info line to reflect the correct information.
So when we fill out the download information here at IAC, it's "for our eyes only"?

D.

@Saphire

No I streamed rather than downloaded. I did it to listen to the music on a one off basis exactly as if the standard player had been used, not to capture the stream as you seam to be implying. As I said the data (streamed mp3 is discarded, just as it would be by the flash based IAC player).

I'm not discussing the technicalities of how to do this. Unless you use AmigaOS with AWeb browser (which I maintain) it would be useless anyway. The music streamed should be payed for via the Kash Stream in the normal way.

@Duane
Any info you put into the IAC website go into the website not the music file. It's available to browse but when someone buys your mp3 and plays it else where you need to have entering the info into mp3 file itself.

I didn't listen to any of yours recently so I cant remeber whether it's tagged or not if you didn't tag it specifically it may not be.

@Hop And Pop

mp3 files and aslo some other formats like flac. contain "meta" informations about the song in a format call ID3. This is what enable Window Media player, iPods, and many other music and media players to know what song they are playing.

Therefore you should always add this info. Any standard enconder Lame for instance can do it, and it makes sure people now what they are listening too.

For example my freind Sally Strawberry sent a properly tagged mp3 file to a aquantance in russia who spread it arround, and now people are turning up at her site and her last.fm page looking for more....

Hey Andy,
Thanks for the response. Would you do me a favor and either check out to see if my uploaded tunes are tagged, or let me know how I can do the same?

Thanks.
