Seminar
Can't believe a friend of mind (Juliana who did the soprano vocals on our tune Heavenly Bodies) talked me into taking a seminar on vocal technique with her at Wheaton College. That was crazy. I haven't done a thing like that in centuries. I'm glad that the way I teach my voice students is still up to standard according to the McClosky Method. And even though mostly everyone was an opera singer or church musician, just like here at IAC it was an atmosphere of people that love music above all else. The most positive folks around.
In other Shoe City news, we are about to have our next cd, Shoe City Sound Vol 2, mastered. Should be released in the next couple of months or so - all instrumentals. All the tunes are in the same vein and some even in the same key, which wasn't on purpose haha. I'm thinking hopefully it's a soundtrack for something out there somewhere.

Always a cool thing to be around people who love music and enjoy performing. I tend to learn so much from those experiences. I also teach vocals but am unfamiliar with the method you mention here. My method has a lot to do with assuming the role of the song and breathing techniques which I believe is essential to bringing forth dynamically strong vocals.
Looking forward to hearing your new CD after it has been mastered. Mastering is the final process towards reaching the greatest clarity in sound. Big congrats on reaching this point in the production process.

I think it'd be really interesting to have an album where every piece is in the same key! It's kind of a delightful little idea that I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone express. It may make for more of a cohesive piece of music overall.
Good luck in the mastering stage. I'm still not sure what that voodoo is all about, but it sure makes it better!

Thanks Stoneman. I'm psyched to get the mastering done.
I was kind of joking about being in line with the McClosky method. I hadn't heard of it either and I'm not sure very many people have . Their big claim to fame is that McClosky was JFK's vocal coach. While I think he was an inspiring orator, it was sort of in spite of his voice haha. But the people at the seminar were total devotees. The method is all about relaxing all the exterior muscles of the face and neck so that the breath is free and the tone is relaxed and the throat doesn't get stressed or possibly injured.
It was relevant for me because sometimes my teen age students really strain to try and sound like their favorite pop singers and it's always a battle to make them stop forcing the tone and hurting themselves and sounding horrible in the process .
I totally agree with your teaching style.

Appreciate your comment Tom, and thanks. I only realized that some of the tunes were in the same key after all the final mixes were done. I hadn't written anything down on paper, just sort of played along to the beats and layered stuff as we went along. I was going to switch up some of them to other keys in Logic, but decided to just let it alone. Hopefully you're right about it being a positive.
Couldn't agree more about the mastering process. It adds another dimension entirely.

Great news on getting your new CD together Dolores..
Sounds an interesting concept having all the tracks in the same key..
I had absoloutly no idea with anything to do with vocal technique at all until recently....
And actually learnt something new a year or so ago..
I always wondered why my voice always sounded terrible when i did my first set busking (street playing) and then magically seemed to get better for the 2nd set..
A female friend (who's a vocal coach like you ) told me i had to warm my voice up first for about 20 minutes with some simple scales
After doing that, amazingly enough my first set started sounding as good as the 2nd..
Now i always do that if i'm gonna do a vocal take on a track i'm recording too..

Thanks about the cd, Steve -it's a concept by accident, since I didn't even notice till too late that so many tunes were in the same key haha . And absolutely! on the warm ups. You definitely gotta clear the pipes before you can make your best sound.
