Remember When?
If you were an adult in the 1990's do you remember how the atmosphere was? the movies, the clothes, the hairstyles, the music, the attitudes, the media, the general sense of easiness with a sense of humor compared to now ..... I am no advocate of that particular decade, just comparing it to the climate of fear and anxiety we live in now. That was the turn of the century ... it feels like another planet to me looking back. I have to say I was way more relaxed then. We were writing tunes then, we're writing them now - people need us. We provide perspective. All the artists always do.

This is an important topic and excellent subject to expand upon Dolores, I agree, it is way different, so much so. We cant change the way it is. but we can sure try, having this community of people here is a real boon, and important part of our artist music thing. having the ability to express ourselves. in and on the pipeline and in the music we make. thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts!!

I was born in an innocent little town, grew up in innocent times. It was idyllic. I think the real ugliness started with the twin towers going down, and followed with a lot of folks exploiting people's fears for their own purposes.

Those early times won't be around again but you can be thankful if you saw them. It's a place and state of mind to aspire to find somehow, if you can.

Delores is right. Some people call it the "the last best decade". As I recall, the economy was doing great and that made a lot of people feel secure and optimistic about the future. Generally, folks seemed to be a good mood most of the time. Today ~ well, not so much.

The 90s left me cold in many ways, dial-up internet, Boy bands, Girl Power, Street bands, Home improvement shows, Jerry Springer type shows, !970s retro movement, the recession, Moving into the 21C was like a chance to put it all behind, sadly that resolution soon faded. I like to go back to the good old days of wholesome innocence, switch on a Fred Astaire movie on my black and white 9 inch TV and listen to some Cole Porter - but unfortunately I wasn't alive then.

I guess we're all on the same page here .... Richard, I had no idea the "last best decade" was a thing. I realized last night (over many glasses of wine) that my personal anxieties really had less to do with me than with the times we live in. I was so relieved haha - "light dawned on Marble Head" as they say around here.

And yeah, it sure did have to do with 9/11, Father Time. We lost so many civil liberties and it was so planned out. Remember the whole color coded alert thing? Someone, somewhere in the government was really gonna have a ball with scaring everyone on a daily basis and have us all biting our nails to see what color terrorism it was. Boy that went over like a lead balloon. They continue to insult everyone's intelligence and underestimate us all judging us by their own really cowardly selves.

So agree with you IMPoster. As I said, I'm no particular fan of the 90's. I guess people were spoiled back then and got really lost in self indulgence as a culture. But looking back, that was a luxury and one sort of silly sign of a free society. We all had enough money to live in the cities and support music/arts scenes at clubs and other venues. I tell you what, if we're going back to Fred Astaire and Cole Porter, meet me at the time machine. Let's do it up and go all the way back to the 1930's and get dressed up and go see Fred at a big beautiful deco theater - then we'll get a cocktail and dance to Cole Porter at a nightclub with tables and a dance floor. The people back then matched the celebrities for sense of style and fun, even though they were broke, like we are now. It's only the start of the 21st century and, while I agree it's getting off to a slow and sort of discouraging start, I'm hopeful it can develop into something as exciting as our electronics - not back to how cool it was just forward to how fabulous it's supposed to be.

I'm telling you Bryon, I have guilt that I'm not an activist and I can't express in that way with music. The only tunes that come to me right now are in an ambient jazz lounge chill out sort of way. I'm just longing for an updated atmosphere as stylish as Fred Astaire and Cole Porter. I'm not daring to compare myself to people like them, but it seems right to emulate them and put some tunes out there that maybe would be good enough for some cool people who want to hang out together and have a scene that the right wing bullies would be scared to approach. Damn, musicians keep knocking them down when they try to steal being hip for their campaigns - Neil Young just recently and Springsteen and others in the past. It's a legit way to fight back. (again not ever comparing Shoe City Sound to those guys. They ARE activists with style)

End of big rant .... somebody stop me!

Wouldn't dream of stopping you Delores, we love a good rant here, especially when readers and respondents can look at things from their own or often very different perspectives. Thank goodness we can always take solace and escape to old TV shows and music when the World gets a little too complicated or unpleasant, A nostalgic indulgence or two is like a comforting hug, gives us the breathing space we need to imbibe the smell the roses and stay sane :)

Thanks Verity - yeah, ranting has got to be good for the soul haha and old TV too. I agree it's a valuable escape. I love to go there - breathing space and time out from the madness.

A good read here Dolores et al, yes the mainstream media dogs have grabbed onto the "War on Terror" and continue to report mostly negatives for the news consumers who in turn, feel dis-empowered and alienated. This is a self fulfilling process and generally makes us sad-------

we can't go back but we can resist in our own personal networks----most peeps don't want to know, MUSIC & ART ARE THE BEST WAYS TO FIGHT BACK IMO

The 90's are kind of a blur to me. Could be because I have been around for over 6 decades. I remember the 60's best as they were a time of revolt, rage and smoke filled rooms decorated with pictures made especially for black lights. But now the time is moving so fast that I can't even remember what I was doing in the 90's except for working 3 jobs and getting ready for retirement. However, my music is a great reminder of what I was doing in the 90's. Each song from those days give me a glimpse of my mindset and my perceptions of the world.

As a songwriter my goals are very clear and concise. I want to entertain but I also want to say something important every now and then. You know? Something that may be life changing for someone else. Or maybe it will give them 5 minutes of relief from whatever painful event they may be going through.

But I would never want to go back to any of those past decades. My future and my present are possibly ending soon. All I want to do now is make the best out of each day I have left. So, I spend many hours in the studio working on what could be my final project. None of us know when our time is coming. That even goes for you youngsters out there. But we can make the best out of this time right now. This is the most important time of my life. The past is just a reminder of the things I still have to do. The songs I still have to write and the books I want to get completed. I am in a race. You are in a race. You may not know it but you are. We are all in a race with time. It is a race that most of us will lose. But an soul like me knows that it ain't over till it's over. So, for me, its back to work. Back to the studio. One more CD to complete while I plan the next one after that. Music is the only thing I have to offer. So I continue to give to the best of my ability. I am nobody special but my music has become special for a lot of folks. I see that as the coolest thing I was blessed to be part of. It is a sacred privilege that no one can take away. Sorry, I went into a rant also. But those of you that know me know that that is pretty much par for the course with me. Sorry about that.................

Agree Stoneman. I never want to go backward to the 90's or any other decade - just want to keep perspective because people think it was always this shitty and that's the way they stay controlled. It's potentially way better now than ever if you don't get lost in the discouraging propaganda. "something good is coming near" wrote that line a while ago, but I still feel that way and the power is always in the present moment.
