Shoe City Sound takes a hit
All our recording/music files reside in our 2000 iMac which unfortunately bit the dust this weekend - died in it's tracks ... We have it all backed up to an external hard drive, and will have the new computer set up in a couple of weeks. But I'm wondering since the new computer will have Logic Pro X and the old stuff is all on Logic Pro 8, will we be able to import to the new program? If not, I'm thinking maybe we have to just set up Logic Pro 8 on a separate system and use that separately? Anyone got any personal experience with this - aside from or in addition to what Apple will suggest?

Thanks
D

If it was made in Logic 8 it will work in Logic X. Try out the Alchemy plugin it,s ace

Yes, Logic is upward compatible.

Paul and Stoneman - thanks ... just checked out some of the online info on Alchemy. Oh my God - can't wait to get this all up and running. The old software didn't have adjust "trim" as an option. I missed that so much and I see it's part of Logic Pro X - so just for that one small thing alone!

I have had the same unfortunate fate interfaces that dies that is no longer in production hard drives crashes. I follow the same rule and back up my projects and wave files to external hard drive.

I don't know about importing the project to logic since I never worked with that but at least even if you can't import the project you should be able to use the audio files and create a new project I know that is difficult because of haw many functions are saved with the project at least you did not loose the wave files.

Thanks Two - hopefully the logic files will just go from the old version of the program to the new one ... that's what everyone says anyway haha - We won't have the new iMac for a couple of weeks so praying to the God of files till then ... but yeah, totally comforting to have the WAVs on the external hard drive at least.

The way i back up songs is a 2 part process. I do as you do and also back it up to dvd-rw. As there is always the small chance that a electrical spike could kill everything. Never rely on a hd for your back ups even external. Using a dvd-rw u can leave it open so if you change the song u can write it to the dvd-rw as the song is made. Another tip is to use suppressor on the electrical plug to prevent spikes.
