In Answer to Lesley
From my page:

"Hello Bob. Lesley.

I am intrigued, Sir.

What songs of yours, were you speaking of,
when you mentioned you would be amenable if one was moved to cover them?
Parallel Universe you say. Yes, I am intrigued"

My response:

It was from another thread here about who would we like to cover our songs, and I said it's an honor if anyone wants to cover any of my songs. But what I mean is that if a song grabs someone in such a way that they feel compelled to cover it, that's an honor, and probably every writer feels that way. If some day you become a listener of our band, The Pawns, and something gets under your skin like, say, the last thing I had to learn (Could It Be I'm Falling in Love) got under my skin causing an actual need and desire to be able to play it, then by all means cover it. That would be an honor because that would mean the song worked magic on another player, and that's not nothing.

I know I have a tendency to write lyrics that are not universal enough to invite others to want to sing them. I'm not sure why I do that, since much of what I listen to for pleasure is very universal stuff, but some of my songs are more in the universal ready to be covered vein.

The first twelve songs on my page right now, are not my tunes (well I did some co-writing on some of those), they are from an album we did to bring out the artfulness of our friend Tom O'Brien. Those all have his picture on them, but the rest is my material.

So I guess my answer is any of them, but only if it's because your soul needs it.

Welll then..

I'll have to spend some time listening to your material at some length...

the bit about parallel universe, that's what intrigued me,

I'm pretty sure I'm from one,

like, couple years ago, I tried to cover Help Me Rhonda by The Beach Boys,
and, every version I was finding, wasn't it, wasn't the one I remembered...
as though, that version just did not exist here... not quite, not exactly,
and I did a version then, based on what I could find,
but I didn't like it...

and yesterday I got the idea, that, I'm skilled enough,
instead of referring to a record of theirs,
just, bang out the version of it, as I remember it...

which is the thing I just put out.
That's how I remember it.

there's other things, well, see when I died, they brought me back,
after me being flatline dead for a good few minutes...

I don't think I came back to the exact same universe.
there are subtle differences.

one of which, I clearly remember Kirk Douglas, had died.
Like, ages ago. Right after he made that movie
with three generations of Douglases in it.

Only, here, he's still alive. He's very old, but he's still alive.

Anyway, I'm prattling on, thank you Bob Elliiot, I shall spend
some time exploring your musical universe.

And if I find a song which grabs me by the antennae,
you will be the first to know,

this I promise you.

Thank you again.

~L

Well you're quite good, aren't you.

I've pretty much decided on I'll have to cover one of yours,
but which one, I just heard two, Blue Water,
and another one about She Fills My Head With Pictures,
I just closed the page to come back here, so I forget the exact title,
they're both quite good, I basically have to listen
to everything you've done just to have a fair idea
which one'll get the Lesley and/or BEATLESEX treatment,

I kinda don't wanna do exactly the same thing you did with it,
Blue Water for instance, is great, but I'm not sure
if I see an angle to it, other than how you stated it, it's, there it is.
Where do you take it from there?

The pictures she puts in me head one,
that got me and me mates thinkin', that one did.

They're hearing harmony possibilities not realized in that
recording, so already we have a contender,
but it's like 'well if he can write this, who knows what else he's got',

this may take a while.
but it looks like we aim to do it.

Lesley,

can you do fingerpicking? Sorta like that?

It doesn't actually matter, You do what you do, and what you do is great. Just wondering. That tune could be done many ways. And it's a great tune to cover, for sure.

I only have a few styles of fingerpicking I can do. So it's not like I'm an expert or even maybe listenable at it. But I do love to do what I do when I do it, its sort of like riding a kayak or canoe on the river for me.

It's just that I don't think I've ever heard you do it (maybe I don't listen enough?, even though I think you're great, I don't think I've heard your entire repertoire). and I just wondered if that was something you do.

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter, but he does a LOT of it, it sounds natural to him, and a natural part of his tunes.

Just eager to hear it done different, I guess?

Actually Dan, no, I don't do much in the realm of finger picking.
I've always found that impressive.

But I do what I do, like you said, and I generally find a way to make it sound good.
I'll do my utmost not to disappoint, as always.

Well, I hope it moves you.

That is in DADF#AD capo on third or second fret. Can't remember which fret.

Funny about me and fingerpicking. I'm really mostly into soul music. I play with my fingernails even on electrics and lead work.

Oh my, Bob.

You have a natural knack around the finger-picking, there is no doubt.

I have a natural knack about making creative arrangements and cool records,
but, about the closest I get to having any skill at all remotely related
to finger-picking, is to play barehanded without use of a pick,
I did that today, actually, in a song I basically pulled out of a dream.

Usually, I use a pick. Or 'pleck' as John's been known to call 'em.

The song is great indeed, I wouldn't be fixing to cover it if it did not move me.
It is beautiful, and we're taking the 'stretch out and ponder' approach
to arranging our version... we want it resplendent to be sure.
Nothing less. It's a great song, and you've stated it perfectly.

Rather than try to imitate what you've done already to perfection,
we instead opt to in our way, with all three of our minds envisioning it,
(it's going to be a BEATLESEX record, and it's me,
and the two fellows I channel, one named Lennon, one named Harrison)
to restate is as it forms and manifests in our realm of music imagination.

We look forward to it, and it will probably be fairly soon
that we begin work on it.

To me the 'folkish' way it's done there is not set in stone. Seems like it doesn't have to be folk at all.

I think it may be a pretty solid song, but I disagree that nailed it yet. I think I need to sing it more friendly in the middle eight, and there are other things that bother me, too much picking downtime between verses I think maybe.

Mostly I think I could sing it better.

It has a sexy theme.

Well, now you remind me of me,

I'm probably my own harshest critic, everything has to be just so.
I think you sound great on it.

It probably comes down to potatoes, potahtoes,
so you make potatoes, and I'll make potahtoes...

I am looking forward to working on this song. We all are.

It's interesting to hear about the fingernail sound.

They don't have to look great to sound great, eh?
