Is It Wrong to Ask Who is Doing All This Listening?
The song plays for my tunes are just through the roof over the last two weeks, and it's just wonderful to think the music is being heard.
But how is it happening? Is it because of the stations the songs are on?
Well, who does all this listening to these stations? I mean it can't just be the people who post on this forum, because there aren't enough of them to generate that kind of traffic. So who are these listeners? Are they other musicians, or do civilians actually tune in?
Before the internet I would have never believed I would be able to get 10,000 listens in two weeks without being somewhat well known in the world (I'm not). Now that it's happened I find it to be a strange experience because it is very anonymous. You never know really who listens or what they think, your listeners appear to be disconnected from each other so there isn't really a snowball effect.
It's numbers you can read, and that's all. But they are wonderful numbers.
Anyway, thanks for the support and the listens. It's a strange success, but I'm happy to have listeners.
But any idea how this all happens here?

IAC has been getting a huge amount of traffic these days as the My Space crowd is moving over here pretty rapidly. There's a word of mouth thing happening because this is the real indie site and it's pretty obvious to those who join here and pay attention somewhat. Big difference between a site that is artist run and about the artists and all these corporate sites that eminate a different vibe.
Our number of pipeline pages which are mostly listeners and not artists these days has been growing really fast so yes, there is a pretty large base of non artists. In fact some of those listeners run some of the top stations here. There are some stations which get a tremendous number of plays, if a song is on one of the top stations it will fare really well at IAC.

That is fantastic Bob! Congratulations, I am really happy for you. It is always gratifying to know that someone is listening to one's work.
I do have to ask though, is that on one song?

Nah, it's just the total of a bunch of tunes. The most any of 'em have in this month is 950.

I'm fascinated by the stats here!!
I also use it as a marketing tool------when a song is getting popular ---or when it's past it's peak and time to be replaced---I can't think of any site that breaks the numbers down so well!
when "Gondwana" was peaking I think it got 8,000 one month----Myspace simply can't compete!

I'm happy to see you get so many plays Bob. You have a style of your own and you write some great strong songs. To find so many people listening and enjoying your songs is a great reward for you and it can only grow from now on.

Me too having many more plays, have already for May more than entire April and way more than March. Was also wondering where they came from, I don't see many in the daily stats which made me wonder if they were played offsite somewhere somehow. One song doing well is only on one station and that's my station...yeah...who are all those listeners.

Bob, I just been listening to your songs, and they're really good, like them a lot. That's great that they're getting a lot of play, and hope that continues.
Toby, I just came over here from myspace a couple of weeks ago, and like you said, there is a big difference in the sites. Although I only have one song up here at the moment it does get more play than the songs I have on myspace. I found out about IAC because they sent me an e-mail. I don't know how they found me, but I'm glad they did.

I know what you mean. I was on GarageBand.com; just starting to put some music online, when I got an e-mail (I'm ashamed to admit that I can't remember who sent it) to check out IAC. It was the best move I ever made.

yup. Me too. I know exactly how you feel about that fateful email I noticed finally about a year ago...
And it took at least three of those emails before I realized --- It's NOT:
Myspace, PUREVOLUME, ISOUND, BETARECORDS.COM, MP3.COM or The
lovely IdolUnderground.com --- or even ConversationSuicide.com it's
IACMUSIC that is the best place for me!

It is a little strange when I don't know who to thank for taking the time to listen. I am extremely grateful to station managers who pick up my songs. It does make a tremendous difference in exposure, and hey it also brightens my day to know that someone took the time to appreciate a part of who I am. I wish some of my own stations were more popular because I am playing some great tunes for sure, and I would love to help promote good music. For me, I guess I am not necessarily focused on numbers, but I can't help but wonder how many actual people are listening to my songs. It's more about really understanding the numbers. I'm more interested in patterns over time, when it comes to evaluating the reception of a song. THANK YOU. Thanks to Toby too!

I've listened to ALL of you in the last few weeks - lol - true statement. The best part about this place for me is the "access". Where else in the world can you find a song you like, or a page of songs you like, and have a better chance than not of actually engaging the musician in conversation??? IT'S FANTASTIC!!!

I'M STUNNED!!! It's been a real beautiful thing being on IAC and finally getting listened to...So far this month, considering I have some 30 songs on my page, I have over 22,000 plays this month!!! I am SO grateful to you all having our music on your stations and to all the listeners who are playing us...It's a TRUE Blessing to be here at IAC!!! Thanks again!!! SILVERWOOD: I do the same as you. I check the stats every couple of days or so to see what songs are being listened to and get rid of the ones with real low plays after a couple of months. I do give some songs some time to see if it gains popularity. It's (the play count) a good measure to see what's popular on your page(s). 8,000 in one month? AMAZING & well deserved. My best is about 1,500 for one song, but with the added listeners, hopefully I can break my own personal best. It's fun to watch sometimes. I am just trying to get the Hip Hop Genre here a little more notariety. It's for us all in the end result.
