Very nice synth work here Bryon. Love those runs and textures. Good music productions. I was a bit confused about the drum parts though. I listened several times as I was trying to understand my confusion. Then I looked up and realized that this was Jazz Fusion which of course has its own set of rules or maybe I should say no rules at all. That versus commercial music which has a variety of rules that must be musically maintained. Anyway, at that point I began to understand the entire song a lot better. Fusion is always kind of tricky because it does not conform to common music standards. From that standpoint I must say that you really got my attention as a producer. Really liked the bridge a lot to. I applaud your ability to non-conform and produce music that causes one to think and ask themselves questions. This is kind of head shrink music. Herbie Hancock would be proud of ya!

Much Respect,
Stoneman

well thanks for the incredible insight, review and evaluation Stoneman. I too was wondering about that transition from one style that was out of the norm and stretching the limits, and I thought today, should I change it, I didnt want drums percussion to be the focal point, driving the thing,, I wanted the focus on the bass, keys, synth melody line. with the percussion back in the mix. and then go up tempo at the bridge. yet I concur with you Stoneman, I was going to change it up, and fought and thought about it with myself thinking is this going to work, and was concern some may say, whats up with that beat. weird out to lunch and some may even say so, but all good, it is my strangeness at times that I use unconventional approaches. thanks again, I appreciate you taking the time to give me your thoughts.

so Stoneman, I changed the percussion, I may have to rethink this one, I dont want to confuse things here, or the syncopated beats on the end of 1 beat. not sure if it helps or distracts

I agree with stoneman cool keyboard. Love the vibrato effect way cool. The drums are way of time its like the drums are playing a different song.

now saying that the drums got much better at 1:10 they actually almost fit this part still slightly off. But I love the change!

the cool bass at 1:50 reminds me of Michael Jackson "Thiller" and that is a huge compliment that song sold millions.

again 2:42 throws new interesting elements its like a surprise pops out at you around each minute mark which is fantastic.

Overall a very cool funky tune that I really did like the cool synth and the bass but that jazz fusion beat still is distracting to your other great qualities.

Ken

yah Ken, think you and Stoneman are correct, I think there may be some timing issues, i thought i had it down. and not sure which direction to go now. like i said, might have to rethink it, but there is a lot of syncopation stuff here and it sounds like things are off, but if you count it out the beats are on the end of 1 and other places. so the push thing, yet, i know it is distracting and not sure how to resolve or modify, so when i get to this point, it becomes problematic when one starts messing around with what worked originally

nothing on the first at start beat but at the end of the 1 on the end of one. behind its not off Ken, because the synth push is coming on behind the one. but it sounds off, because of that push off, and that is why it seems to slip, but lets get more ears here, I counted the thing off and tapped out the beat for quite a while and when i did it, it was really something challenging, yet, maybe I am out to lunch, maybe get some percussionist here and people who know something there, i may have to address this percussion thing and beats.

thanks for the input guys

You are probably right but it sounds "off" because its on the end of the 1
Not sure how many other takers you will get. Not many reviewers seem to be piping up here its a shame.

Just saying what I heard or thought I heard. I am not sure how to resolve the beat either but if you could its a cool jive funky song.

Hey Ken, I think you are correct on some of the issues, I might have to tackle a couple spots, I talked to Stoneman on FB and he made some suggestions to me about it, so I probably will follow through , still you have a keen ear and really appreciate the compliments on getting some funky groovy synth things going. much thanks for your support as well as suggestions , I think I will have to continue the journey on this one. but great to get feedback. Will continue to fix some of those issues, it is not perfect and glad to have some people like you and Stoneman to point out some details here.

thank you!!

Hey Byron I listened to your song again and again it is just so funkadelic.
If your interested hit me up with an mp3 of the synth and bass I could try to come up with an interesting drum part for you.

Ken

Stoneman or anyone else out there give the tune a second listen with the updated drum. Any comments welcome I won't be offended it can only help me improve. I know there are some spots that are not a clean as they could be. I tried to get it done quickly with minimal glaring errors.. I appreciate the chance Byron gave me to play drums on his song.
For anyone that has not checked this tune out Byron is fantastic on keys and this has a funky groove all on its own.

Enjoyed hearing this very retro 70's-ish synth. Very well done from a keyboardist's perspective. Gotta say that I would've like a more steady groove to establish itself, maybe a minute into the song. It feels a little herky-jerky - which is fine for intros and breakdowns. Heard a ride cymbal around 2:30 that made me think that a steady ride over a steady pattern would've been fulfilling. I like the riff that dominates most of the song, but felt like it could've slipped into the background with some more of that synth sliding and maybe getting more freaky. A quality recording from what I hear on my fairly okay computer speakers.

Thanks for your insightful quality review, there are some aspects I agree with you on making it more fluid, i will relook at some of what you suggested and perhaps revamp parts per your ideas. solid critical evaluation Daniel and much appreciated. Do what i can to improve it, although not sure if i can get it to the level you might prefer.

You are right on Daniel. I used a ride only at the very last part of the song for dymanic effect. Through the rest of the song I used crash highlighted in places by a chi-dal crash The drum beat was blended into the back ground intentionally to be a response to the keys. It is a jazz feature so it may not have some of the standard changes you might expect.
I agree with Byron it was a solid review with good points.
Byron let me know if you are interested in entertaining the ride through the song I have not tried it so I don't know how that would translate but its easy and fast to just redo the ride track if you like.

Ken
