Helen Simons is a retired lecturer from the University of Sydney Faculty of Education . Her qualifications include a Diploma of Advanced Studies in Education from the University of Keele (UK) and a B.Ed and a Masters of education (Special Education) from the University of Sydney. From an early age Helen grew up surrounded by musical family. Her love of jazz began during her early teens listening nightly to the ABC's Arch McKirdy and Relax with Me , ""Australia's most popular radio program"" in the 1960s and early 1970s. During her early twenties travelling through Europe Helen was asked to become to the first female DJ in West Berlin after being introduced to the Burdensky brothers who owned many nightclubs at the time. After a long inaugural stint the Ciro Beach Club Helen moved to London to further her teaching career and continued her DJ work at night. Never loosing her interest in music or working as a DJ Helen eventually ended up on community radio stations with her show JazzXpress. Promoting Australian jazz and blues continued for over 15 years. After a hiatus Helen is re-launching her JazzXpress station featuring her favourite old and new artists.
