But the good news is that a whole new mob of great writers has appeared in the years while I was away, and I'm really looking forward to giving them a listen

It's proved a real b*gger, just picking one song from this lot. 'Rain, Rain...' nearly pipped it at the post, but the superb string arrangement and deceptively simple lyrics of this one came up from the back of the field and got it by a nose. But you have to listen to the songs in toto, I think, because the easy option for the casual listener is probably 'yeah yeah, fiddle-de-dee, ye olde folke clubbe stuff'; no, read the lyrics as you go.  Ah, Gilly... I thought she'd gone from IAC, but it turns out she's merely gone and changed her name... I remembered how good her voice is, and the quality of her songs, but I had forgotten what a soddingly good guitarist she is.  Reminiscence alert... Ten seconds into this, and I was back in the late70s/early 80s, in a smoky beery pub or club, looking out from the stage to see whether someone's mum had remembered to press 'record' on the the crappy little cassette recorder whose batteries might not last, and praying that this time, we wouldn't be drowned out on tape by someone at a nearby table telling a tedious story about their pink half of the drainpipe.  Hugh, another name I can cross off my (obviously very inaccurate) MIA list. Right: where do I start? Lyrics as good as I would expect, voice, harmonies and melody ditto. The ukulele: where did that come from? Hugh's material is not all like this, you should hear his acoustic work... and the rockier stuff. Classy, in a word.  Some years ago, we had a holiday in a lovely rural place in Arkansas, a few miles from Hot Springs. In a dry county... So that evening, we headed for the next county - but in the wrong direction, as I found trying to order a beer in the restaurant. Next day, we went the other way: 'BEER! LIQUOR! ONE MILE!'signs, leading us to a shack about four inches over the county line. Apart from being a really good song, this just took me back to that time, thanks muchly.  I'm supposed to be trawling IAC for stuff that's new to me, but already I'm wondering whether I should just put up a link to the fabulous Folk Acoustic Americana station and have done with the effort... Anyway. The word 'Celtic' makes me think twice about listening to tracks, because Britain is plagued with plastic Paddies who belt out 'The Fields of Atholl Rye' and drink Guinness on March 17th, without having ever been west of Bristol. This instrumental track has some kind of Morrocan vibe going on, whilst suggesting influences from much further East, but it seems at the same time (OK, I know, it's doing my head in as well) to be almost pure Zingaro.
