The rejuvenation of hip hop has begun and the future has arrived with San Diego’s energizing producer/rap artist Young Mass. Born Derrick Stanton, Mass moved with his family from Chicago to the San Diego area over a decade ago. Since then, this 21-year old has worked diligently to establish his production, writing and rapping skills – elevating his game to a level on par with today’s hottest stars.

In 2003, the front man of Digital Underground, Shock G, recognized Mass’ talent and potential at San Diego’s annual “Gutfest” barbeque. Shock G heard Mass’ demo tape during the event and invited Mass to join the group on-stage later that night for a three song set. For the next four years, Young Mass was introduced at Digital Underground’s shows as their newest member.

Shock G showcased Mass’ talent by immediately adding him to Cherry Flava'd E-Mail, on Shock’s solo album, Fear of a Mixed Planet. Since that time, Mass has continued to showcase his skills by producing eleven tracks for Money B and Cleetis Mack’s Sex and the Studio DVD/CD series. The hit single, Drank-A-Lot, was a fan favorite on BET’s late night adult-oriented video show Uncut. In 2007, Money B released a mixtape titled Mandatory, Volume One. Young Mass is featured on two tracks and produced an additional four – including the Bay area hit single Solid. In addition, Mass met and collaborated with Dr. Dre for Dr. Dre’s anticipated Detox album release.

Since then, Young Mass has been working on tracks for his self-titled debut album. When Shock G heard the first single, Blue Skyy, the reaction was unequivocal: it’s “relentlessly a banga”. The second single, Let That Knock, is a true example of Mass’ production skills and will, no doubt, be a club favorite. The album will also feature collaborations with Bay area favorites – Yukmouth (of the Luniz), Mimi, Tha Mekanix and more.

Young Mass has been quietly earning respect from artists and fans throughout southern California. As a protégé of Digital Underground, Young Mass has enhanced his skills and developed the stage experience necessary to amplify a live crowd. As a solo artist, Young Mass has the talent to elevate hip-hop to another level.

Digital Underground’s YOUNG MASS Enters Talks With SUGE KNIGHT For Sophomore CD!

Former Digital Underground/Aftermath hip-hop artist Young Mass can see promise working with an executive producer that has Knight’s determination to get back on top of the rap game, as well as his business talents in recovering/obtaining masters, and royalties. Mass is also in talks with Seattle’s “Jake Records”, and San Diego upstart “Young Mogul Records” for the project.

San Diego (June 1, 2008) Hip-hop artist Derrick “Young Mass” Stanton is in talks with Death Row CEO/Co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight to act as executive producer on the follow-up to his 2008 independently released self-titled debut. The title of the upcoming new album, which is scheduled for release early 2009, is "Prodigal Son" with the first single off the new album being titled "Free". (Available at www.myspace.com/massterpiece) The album features the likes of Shock G, Dotrix 4000, Metaphysical, Ace The General, and newcomer Play B.

After several phone conversations, Knight and Mass were able to meet on May 1st at downtown San Diego’s “Club Aubergine” during a spot performance by R&B singer Ray J. The two connected immediately after discussing Mass’ current album, upcoming album, and tails of trial and tribulation Mass has been through in the music business at the ripe age of only 21.

First issue on the agenda was the problem that many of Mass’ masters are being “bogarted” by several studios he recorded at over his five-year recording career with Digital Underground. Various songs had to be withheld from Mass’ self-titled debut album, do to the poor quality of the copies in Mass’ possession. Several of the songs in question would make welcome additions to Mass’ new “Prodigal Son” project, including tracks with Digital Underground front man Shock G, with whom Mass retains a “crazy uncle/nephew” relationship. Mass is also perplexed at why he has not been receiving royalties and/or proper credit for work on several projects including his production work on the “Sex and the Studio” XXX DVD series, and “25 to Life” video game soundtracks. Most recently Mass was surprised but elated when he found out his current hit song “Blue Skyy” is not only being included on, but the lead single on Digital Undergrounds new album “..cuz a D.U. party don’t stop!” which was released nationally last week via Jake Records.

Second subject of interest was the disrespect Knights former artist Dr. Dre, and the Aftermath staff showed for Mass’ musicianship. Mass had befriended Dre as well as several key members of the Aftermath staff during his three years of employment at the Dr.Dre owned “RockHardBody Total Fitness” gym in Woodland Hills California. Dre mentored Mass musically during this time, critiquing, and advising on Mass’ productions, arrangements, and beat creations.

After his employment at the exclusive yet troubled business, Mass was invited into Aftermath’s studio to work sessions for Dr. Dre’s Detox album, where he learned the inner workings of the label. After laying down some of his best lyrical work, Mass was unexplainably black balled from the studio. Mass has recently composed an unforgiving “Diss Record” which expresses his ill feelings toward the way he was treated by Dre and the Aftermath staff after his recording sessions. “I must air niggas out” says Mass “We are all men and dope musicians! Karma swings around regardless of who a mutha fucka is… Dre, Jay-Z, Pac, Big, them, me, who ever. Every label has felt the karma for being on top and treating niggas like shit. Ruthless, Deathrow, Badboy, Murder Inc., now the Math (Aftermath) has to feel it.”

Young Mass was due to meet with Knight in LA to demo tracks from he’s new “Prodigal Son” project, but the unfortunate May 10th assault of Knight at “Shag Nightclub” in Hollywood has delayed the meeting. Currently the demo session has been pushed back to late June. Mass insists, “If my big homie Suge can lend me some assistance on these issues, and the new album, my skills will handle the rest!!!”
