Lubbock, Texas is an area packed with musical history. The home of Buddy Holly , Waylon Jennings, Mac Davis, JD Souther, Lloyd and Natalie Maines, and Joe Ely, is it any wonder Jon grew up with a deep abiding love for guitar and all its musical expression? From his very first band in school Jon was getting on the radio shows and performing publicly. Jon Barrett continues the Lubbock tradition with his personal blend of country rock he refers to as "Twang & Roll".
Guitar-based with plenty of rhythm and rich vocal harmonies, the style hearkens back to bands such as the Eagles, Poco, and the Outlaws - if they played modern, big-guitar rockin' songs with a light touch on personal issues.
Levelland, Texas is Jon's actual hometown. A small agricultural and oilfield town west of Lubbock on the High Plains of Texas, it hosts one of the world's premier country music programs at South Plains College.
As a teenager already playing gigs with a band, he became interested in the guitar playing of rock stars like Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler and Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham, and after in-depth study of their techniques and endless practice, Jon brought those influences to his own music. The resulting unique style is a blending of country music with rock-style guitar (similar to Keith Urban, Molly Hatchet, or Kenny Chesney which he refers to as "twang-n-roll").
Jon attended South Plains Community College (Shooter Jennings, Trent Willmon, LeAnn Womack and Natalie Maines were also members of this program) and he was a performing member of the touring ensemble, Country Caravan.
After completing his 4-year degree at Texas Tech University, Jon joined the US Navy as an officer. He was stationed in Japan for 2 ½ years, and has had several interesting assignments, none of which he can discuss. "But they were "interesting'", says Jon. He has been on ships and in the Special Warfare Commands (SEAL Teams).
Now located in New York, the Texan owns a recording studio, a production company, and works with various artists to publish and develop their music, as well as fronting his band.
They are currently recording and releasing new versions of several songs written by outstanding songwriter Jim Rothe for a new CD. It's Been A Long Time Coming has also been submitted to Nashville artist Lane Turner for possible inclusion on his debut CD.
