Any young bands gonna end up legendary?
You never can tell until maybe 10 years after a group comes out. Only relatively recently have we gained the perspective of time to say that Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, & Nivana deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with bands like The Who, Doors, Zep, Stones, Kinks, Police, Fleetwood Mac, and so on... It's probably a given that noone will ever again come close to gaining the universal appeal of The Beatles, universal from teeny-boppers to the more sophisticated listeners, but the number of bands with a long successful track record and wide name-recognition has diminished considerably within the past 15 years. Dave Mattews Band maybe? Shit, they're relatively geezers by now.
The trend ever-increasing segmentation of audiences has snowballed over this time period. The most obvious reason, of course, is due to sites like IAC, and technology having made it much easier for any artist to more closely realize his vision. It boils down to, there's just a gazillion great sounding songs that I may or may never stumble upon.
You're probably saying, "well, duh", and "so, what's the problem?" Well, it is great for me to be able to both get music out there, and to be able to snag tunes from some anomymous source that's every bit as good as (or better than) what's on the radio.
BUT...where's enough consensus to make an impact on taking rock some new direction, where a few bands just blow everyone's minds, and then some other people get some new ideas that they build upon those first guys? Kinda how we got from Buddy Holly to Beatles to Zepplin, or how Seattle blew away the hair bands.
Is it all gonna just be either the techno stuff grabbing new techno toys, rock just hybredding & assimilating Pink Floyd, Byrds, Stone Temple Pilots, NIN & Bob Marley?
Any good candidates for recent bands that a large audience will remember in 15 years from now? Creed? Mostly in derision. Rascal Flatts? Sorry, slightly different universe there.
